Do not add a heat lamp or heating pad by default: direct or excessive heat can burn or overheat kits. If a kit is cold, limp, injured, or otherwise unwell, contact a rabbit-experienced veterinarian or, for a wild rabbit, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator promptly.
How do I keep a newborn bunny warm?
Start by protecting the nest rather than applying heat. Keep the kits together with their dry nesting material in a quiet, sheltered place. Avoid drafts and dampness, and keep the nest out of direct sun. Check calmly and briefly; prolonged handling can disturb the litter.
Newborn kits have limited ability to regulate their own temperature. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) says that during the first 10–12 days after birth, kits have limited independent thermoregulation and huddle under nest material. This is why an intact, dry nest matters—and why an exposed or chilled kit deserves prompt attention. EFSA Journal scientific opinion (2020)
A warm, quiet litter that stays together and appears rounded after nursing generally does not need supplemental heat. General rabbit-housing temperature guidance is not a newborn nest target: the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs gives 10–20°C as a general rabbitry guide, not a temperature to set specifically for a nest. Does the mother rabbit stay with her babies?
Often, no—not for long stretches. A doe may nurse only once or twice a day and spend little time at the nest, so not seeing her there is not proof that the kits are abandoned. Avoid taking kits away or starting hand-rearing solely because you have not witnessed nursing. Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund guidance
Observe without hovering or repeatedly disturbing the nest. If a kit is persistently crying, cold, limp, injured, or separated from a damaged nest, seek professional advice rather than relying on the doe’s apparent absence as the only sign of a problem.

What should I do if a kit is outside the nest or feels cold?
- Assess promptly. Check whether the kit is cold, weak, limp, injured, or in immediate danger. Kits are vulnerable to chilling when outside the nest.
- Get case-specific advice. Contact a rabbit-experienced veterinarian for a domestic rabbit. For a wild rabbit, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or veterinarian; do not assume it has been abandoned just because the mother is not visible.
- Follow guidance on warming and return. A kit that is hypothermic may need rewarming before it is returned to the nest. The UK rabbit welfare code calls for assessment and possible rewarming of a kit found outside the nest; it is not a detailed home rewarming protocol. UK rabbit welfare code
Do not feed a wild baby rabbit or attempt intensive care based only on online warmth advice. Coldness, limpness, persistent crying, injury, or a destroyed nest are reasons to get qualified help promptly. Humane Society wildlife guidance
Can a heating pad be used for baby rabbits?
Only consider supplemental warmth when a kit is orphaned, chilled, or being hand-reared, and preferably with professional direction. Any heat must be indirect: the kit must not touch the source, and it must be able to move away from it. Heat mats, warming discs, and hot-water bottles can cause burns if used carelessly. A warm room is preferable to a source the kit cannot escape.

The Royal Veterinary College’s 2022 hand-rearing factsheet describes a 28°C environment for hand-reared kits and discusses indirect heat sources with a burn warning. That figure is for hand-rearing, not a universal target for a healthy litter with its doe or for every nest. Royal Veterinary College hand-rearing factsheet (2022)
Temperature figures found in rabbit-care advice refer to different settings and should not be averaged into one recommended newborn temperature:

How can I tell if a baby rabbit is cold or in trouble?
A kit that feels cold, is limp or weak, cries persistently, or has been injured needs prompt professional assessment. A kit found outside a destroyed nest also needs attention. Do not try to diagnose or treat a compromised newborn by temperature alone; the appropriate warming method depends on its condition and circumstances.
For hand-reared or orphaned kits, get veterinary guidance. Hand-rearing is difficult, and supplemental heat must be arranged so the kit cannot touch it or become trapped without an escape from warmth. Keep the kit quiet and dry while arranging help. Royal Veterinary College hand-rearing factsheet
