Prepare your pets for a hurricane before a warning arrives: choose destinations that will accept them, plan how you will get there, and keep a pet-specific go-kit and current identification ready. Local shelter policies and availability vary, so confirm arrangements directly rather than assuming a general shelter will admit pets.
Plan where you and your pets will go
Make pets part of your household evacuation plan, not an afterthought. FEMA advises people to plan for their entire household, including pets, in its hurricane preparation guidance. Identify more than one possible destination before a storm threatens, and check the current rules with each host, lodging provider, or shelter.
When comparing destinations, confirm whether they accept your species and number of animals, how long the trip will take, and whether you can bring the carrier, food, water, medicines, and sanitation supplies your pet needs. Shelter admission and availability are local decisions that can change; contact the destination or local emergency management directly.
Plan a route and transport for every animal, too. Keep a traveling bag, crate, or sturdy carrier for each pet accessible so you are not trying to improvise one when roads are busy. Ready.gov recommends looking for pet-friendly evacuation locations in advance.

Build a pet emergency kit
Ready.gov’s federal checklist covers practical supplies for evacuation and temporary care. Pack items suited to your pet’s species, health, and veterinary advice; the general checklist is not an individualized medical plan.
- Food and water, with bowls or other equipment your pet uses.
- Regular medicines, plus an extra supply kept in a waterproof container.
- Pet-appropriate first-aid supplies.
- A backup collar with an ID tag, harness, and leash.
- Copies of registration information, protected in a waterproof container and saved electronically.
- A current photo of you and your pet together.
- Sanitation supplies, such as a litter box and litter for cats, and trash bags.
- Familiar toys, treats, or bedding that may help your pet settle in an unfamiliar place.
- A traveling bag, crate, or sturdy carrier for each animal.
- Grooming or cleaning supplies if useful for your pet.
Check the kit periodically and replace food, water, medicines, or records that are no longer usable or current. Ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your individual animal, especially if it has a medical condition or takes medication.

Update identification and records
Check that your pet’s ID tag has current owner contact details and that its microchip registration is up to date. Ready.gov also advises keeping a current photo of the owner with the pet; it can help identify the animal and document ownership if you are separated.
Keep registration information and veterinary contacts where you can retrieve them quickly: store paper copies in a waterproof container and keep accessible electronic copies as well. Include relevant medication details and your veterinarian’s contact information with the records you bring.

Make the carrier part of the plan
Choose a safe, familiar carrier or crate for each pet and keep it accessible with the evacuation supplies. Make sure you can transport the animal securely in it. If your pet is not accustomed to the carrier, help it become familiar with it before hurricane season rather than waiting until an evacuation warning.

What to do when a hurricane threatens
- Bring pets indoors at the first sign or warning of a storm. Ready.gov gives this direct instruction in its pet disaster preparedness guidance.
- Monitor official alerts and local instructions. The FEMA App can provide National Weather Service alerts for up to five locations and help locate nearby shelters, according to Ready.gov’s FEMA App information. An app does not confirm that a shelter accepts pets; follow local emergency management directions.
- Leave early when directed and take your pets with you. Use the route and destination you have verified, and bring the carrier, kit, records, and contact information. Do not wait until roads or services become difficult to use.
