A puppy-proofed room, gated area, playpen or comfortable crate can help the puppy settle, while your resident dog keeps access to a familiar resting place. Separate spaces make it easier to introduce the dogs gradually, protect their routines and give them breaks from one another.
Plan the spaces before the puppy arrives
Choose where each dog can rest without being crowded or approached by the other. Keep the resident dog’s familiar bed or favorite resting spot available, and create a separate puppy area using a puppy-proofed room, gated space or exercise pen. A crate can also provide a place to rest if the dog is already comfortable using one.
The goal is not to keep the dogs together all day. Each should be able to retreat, and you should be able to separate them whenever you cannot actively supervise.
Choose a setup that fits your home and dogs

Consider how much space each option contains, whether it blocks access or allows the dogs to see one another, whether it works with your home’s layout, and how each dog responds to the equipment. The options above are general management tools; the cited guidance does not compare specific brands or models.

Set up barriers and remove likely flashpoints
Use a gate, separate room or pen to prevent the dogs from meeting when you are not supervising. A barrier is a management aid, not a guarantee that every dog will be comfortable with it. Watch how each dog behaves near the barrier and adjust the arrangement if either seems distressed or tries to get through.
- Feed the dogs in separate areas.
- Put away food and toys that could add tension during shared time.
- Keep more than one water bowl available.
- Give the resident dog breaks and individual attention rather than changing the whole routine around the puppy.
Introduce the dogs gradually
Start on neutral ground
Arrange the first meeting somewhere other than the resident dog’s home territory, so the puppy does not rush straight into the older dog’s space. A side-by-side walk can let both dogs investigate at their own pace without requiring a face-to-face greeting. If possible, have one handler for each dog. AKC recommends neutral-ground introductions and low-pressure walks.

Keep home interactions short and supervised
Once home, supervise contact and keep early interactions brief. Calm time on opposite sides of a gate or pen lets the dogs share space without having to interact continuously. If the resident dog becomes agitated, separate the dogs or redirect the puppy, then give the older dog a break.
Do not punish a dog for growling or otherwise communicating discomfort. AKC’s introduction guidance describes growling as a signal that a dog is unhappy; respond by creating space and managing the puppy’s access. If you are concerned about how the dogs are getting along, or are unsure how to interpret their behavior, seek help from a qualified trainer or behavior professional.

Build a routine that includes time apart
Use the separate areas for naps, meals, unsupervised periods and any moment when one dog needs a break. Continue giving the resident dog individual attention, and let the puppy explore more of the home gradually as the setup allows. A useful early goal is calm coexistence with a barrier between the dogs—not constant play or immediate friendship.
There is no single adjustment timeline established by the cited guidance. Let the dogs’ behavior guide how much access they have, and keep separation available as their relationship develops.
