Signs that need immediate veterinary attention
These warning signs are reasons to seek professional help promptly, not a complete diagnostic checklist. Symptoms can vary by animal, and a pet may need urgent care even when its signs do not match a list exactly.
Breathing difficulty
Rapid, shallow, noisy, or labored breathing, visible effort from the abdomen, or stretching the head and neck to breathe are emergencies. Blue, gray, or pale gums, weakness, or collapse make the situation especially critical. Open-mouth breathing in a cat is particularly concerning. Cornell advises immediate veterinary attention for canine respiratory distress; call the hospital while arranging transport if possible. Keep the car cool. If a dog is weak or unable to stand, Cornell advises laying the dog on its stomach, supporting the chin, and extending the neck. That positioning advice is dog-specific; ask a veterinarian for guidance appropriate to your pet and situation.

Collapse, unresponsiveness, or seizures
Contact an emergency clinic if your pet collapses, becomes unresponsive, or is difficult to rouse—even if it seems to recover. An active seizure, repeated seizures, or failure to return to normal responsiveness also warrants emergency care.
Major bleeding, trauma, or serious wounds
Go for urgent veterinary assessment after a vehicle impact, a fall from height, an animal attack, a penetrating wound, a burn, or an apparent broken bone. Breathing trouble, pale gums, collapse, or altered awareness after an injury make the situation especially critical.

Possible poisoning or dangerous ingestion
Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately if your pet may have swallowed a toxin or a dangerous object, even if it looks well. Have the product name, ingredients, estimated amount, exposure time, and your pet’s weight ready; bring the packaging or a photo of its label. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically instructs you to do so.

Swollen abdomen or unproductive retching
Repeated attempts to vomit without bringing anything up, especially with a swollen or painful abdomen, warrant emergency evaluation. Drooling, weakness, or vomiting alongside abdominal swelling add to the concern.

Straining to urinate without producing urine
Inability to urinate or repeated straining with no urine needs urgent veterinary attention. This is particularly concerning in male cats.
Overheating, allergic reactions, and other urgent problems
- Possible heatstroke: heavy breathing with weakness or altered mental state after heat exposure or exertion.
- Severe allergic reaction: facial swelling, especially with breathing trouble.
- Other urgent signs: trouble giving birth, severe or repeated vomiting or diarrhea, an eye injury, sudden inability to move, or extreme pain.
Lists of warning signs published by veterinary hospitals are examples, not a way to rule out an emergency. If your pet is rapidly deteriorating or you are worried, call a veterinary professional for case-specific advice.

What to do while getting veterinary help
- Keep everyone safe. Reduce noise and handling, and limit your pet’s movement where feasible. A frightened or injured animal may react unpredictably.
- Call the nearest emergency veterinary hospital or your pet’s veterinarian. Describe the main symptom, when it began, whether it is worsening, any injury or suspected exposure, and relevant medical conditions. Call ahead while traveling when possible so the team can prepare.
- For a suspected poisoning, bring the label or package. Report the substance and ingredients, estimated amount, time of exposure, and your pet’s weight. Do not try to make your pet vomit unless a veterinarian directly tells you to.
- Follow the veterinary professional’s instructions. Do not delay transport to try a home remedy, search for a diagnosis, or wait for an online reply when emergency signs are present.
The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2023 Pet First Aid brochure puts the role of first aid plainly: “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.”

Many emergency categories apply to both cats and dogs, but signs and safe handling can differ. Treat open-mouth breathing in a cat as especially concerning, and treat urinary straining without urine as particularly urgent in a male cat. Do not assume a first-aid position or maneuver advised for a dog is right for a cat. Ask a veterinarian for species-specific instructions.

Availability varies by provider and location; a veterinary professional can help determine what to do for your animal.
