An entomologist identified three Culiseta annulata—two females and one male—in Kiðafell, Kjós, north of Reykjavík. Later reports described additional mosquitoes, including Culex pipiens. These findings show that mosquitoes can arrive and may survive Icelandic conditions; they do not yet prove that either species has established a self-sustaining population.
What was found in Iceland
On 16 October 2025, Björn Hjaltason discovered mosquitoes on wine ropes used to attract moths in Kiðafell, Kjós. Matthías Alfreðsson of the Icelandic Institute of Natural History identified three specimens as Culiseta annulata: two females and one male.
As The Guardian reported, Alfreðsson said: “Three specimens of Culiseta annulata were found in Kiðafell, Kjós, two females and one male. They were all collected from wine ropes during wine roping aimed at attracting moths.” The report described these as Iceland’s first wild mosquito records.
That wording matters. A mosquito found aboard an aircraft arriving from Greenland in the 1980s was preserved at Iceland’s natural history institute, so the 2025 discovery was not necessarily the first mosquito ever transported to the country.

Arrival, survival and establishment are different
A single insect, a surviving seasonal population and a permanent breeding population represent three separate biological steps. The available reporting supports the first step and suggests the second for Culiseta annulata, but has not demonstrated the third.
| Stage | What it means | What the Iceland reports establish |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction | A mosquito is carried into Iceland, potentially in freight or another vehicle. | Confirmed in 2025; the institute said the precise route was unclear and freight was a likely means. |
| Survival | The insect tolerates local temperatures and remains alive after arrival. | Culiseta annulata appeared capable of surviving Icelandic conditions, according to statements reported by Al Jazeera. |
| Establishment | Adults reproduce, offspring survive and the population persists over time. | Not established by the reported observations. No cited source confirms a lasting, reproducing population. |
What happened after the first discovery
A 2026 United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) account reported Culiseta annulata in a light trap at Mógilsá and five specimens on wine ropes in southwest Iceland after the initial find. It also described Culex pipiens in a stable in south-central Iceland.

That report said efforts were under way to eradicate the Culex pipiens population and quoted Alfreðsson saying, “No specimens have been found this year.” The statement referred to 2026 as of the report’s publication date; it is not a guarantee that no later records occurred.
How climate warming fits the story
There is no verified evidence that climate change caused these particular mosquitoes to reach Iceland. Transport, rather than temperature, explains how an insect could physically arrive, and the route of the 2025 specimens remains uncertain.

Warming is relevant to what might happen after arrival. Alfreðsson told Euronews: “Warming temperatures are likely to enhance the potential for other mosquito species to establish in Iceland, if they arrive.” In other words, warmer conditions may increase future habitat suitability; they do not prove that warming caused the 2025 introduction.
Why Iceland has usually lacked mosquitoes
UNRIC described Iceland’s cold conditions, unstable winter frost–thaw cycles and isolated North Atlantic location as possible barriers. These are expert explanations rather than a single settled cause. Cold alone cannot explain every absence: mosquitoes already occur in Greenland and Lapland.

- Non-greasy, lightweight bug repellent spray dries quickly, not sticky
- Long-lasting protection from this OFF! mosquito repellent spray lasts up to 8 hours to keep you protected from mosquito bites day or night
- Odorless formula that helps you avoid mosquito bites during mosquito season
- OFF insect repellent spray is proven to repel mosquitoes, and ticks
- Easy-to-apply aerosol bug spray makes it simple to spray, spread and go
Alfreðsson noted that repeated frost and thaw can disrupt some species, while Culiseta annulata overwinters as an adult and may therefore be less affected. The species’ cold tolerance helps explain why survival is plausible, but it still does not demonstrate reproduction in Iceland.

The sightings do not establish a countrywide mosquito problem or show that dogs, cats or other pets currently face a new Iceland-wide risk. There is no basis in the cited reports for telling visitors to use mosquito products on pets as a routine precaution.

Travellers should follow their veterinarian’s advice for the animal’s origin, destination and existing parasite-prevention plan. Do not apply human insect repellents or household pesticides to an animal unless a veterinarian has specifically confirmed the product and dose.
Do Mývatn’s summer insect swarms consist of mosquitoes?
No. The swarms commonly seen around Lake Mývatn are seasonal midges, which the visitor guidance describes as non-biting. A head net can make summer visits more comfortable, but that advice concerns midges, not evidence of an established Icelandic mosquito population.
How many mosquito species are there?
UNRIC gives a figure of about 3,700 mosquito species worldwide. That number is attributed to UNRIC’s 2026 report; it is not an independently verified count here and does not indicate how many species could survive in Iceland.
What to watch for next
- Repeated captures of the same species across seasons.
- Larvae or pupae in Icelandic standing water, which would directly indicate local breeding.
- Adults emerging from locally produced generations rather than arriving in cargo or vehicles.
- Consistent records after winter, especially where adults or eggs could overwinter.
Until those kinds of evidence are documented, the most accurate description is that Iceland’s long-standing record of no confirmed wild mosquitoes ended in 2025, while the question of permanent establishment remains open.
