Are Kansas lake fish safe to eat? Kansas says fish from the vast majority of its waters are safe to eat. The answer for a particular catch depends on the exact lake or river reach, species, fish size, contaminant and whether the person eating it is in a mercury-sensitive group. Check the current Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) advisory before eating any catch.
KDWP’s consumer guidance states: “It is safe to eat fish caught from the vast majority of Kansas waters.” That broad statement does not override a site-specific restriction.
What the 2026 Kansas advisory covers
KDHE and KDWP issued the 2026 fish-consumption advisories on January 13, 2026. They combine statewide mercury advice for sensitive consumers with restrictions for named waters, fish groups and contaminants. The notice defines a serving as skinless fillet weight before cooking.
- Adult and age 13-plus serving: 8 ounces.
- Ages 6–12: 4 ounces.
- Children younger than 6: 2 ounces.
“Bottom-feeding fish” in the notice means buffalo, carp, catfish, sturgeon and suckers. “Shellfish” means mussels, clams and crayfish.

Who should follow the stricter mercury schedule?
Kansas identifies women who are pregnant, nursing or may become pregnant, and children age 17 or younger as mercury-sensitive. Mercury can harm development of a fetus, nursing baby or growing child, so the state assigns these consumers lower- and higher-mercury choices with different frequencies.
| State category | Examples listed by Kansas | Frequency for mercury-sensitive consumers |
|---|---|---|
| Preferred-choice fish | Blue and channel catfish, common carp, crappies, white bass, white perch, wiper, striped bass, walleye, sauger, saugeye, bullhead catfish, drum and sunfish | One or two servings per week |
| Second-choice fish | Buffalo, flathead catfish, and largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass | One or two servings per month |
If you usually keep fish longer than 20 inches, the notice reduces those recommendations to no more than one weekly preferred-choice serving and one monthly second-choice serving. When the fish type or size is unknown, choose a smaller portion and wait at least a week before eating another serving.
Why location and species both matter
Advisories are not blanket rules for every fish in Kansas. Identify the exact waterbody or river reach and the fish you kept. A restriction for bottom-feeding fish, for example, does not automatically apply to every other species at that location; a shellfish restriction does not automatically cover finfish.

Waters with bottom-feeder consumption limits
The 2026 notice gives location-specific limits for bottom-feeding fish at:
- Cow Creek
- K-96 Lake
- the Little Arkansas River
- Mill Creek
The limit and contaminant differ by location. Read the entry for the particular reach and fish group rather than applying one rule to all four waters.
Named waters with no-eat instructions
The notice says not to eat specified fish or aquatic life at named locations, including:

- Arkalon Park Lakes
- specified reaches of the Arkansas River
- specified reaches of the Kansas River
- Mill Creek shellfish
- shellfish from named reaches of Shoal Creek and Spring River
These entries are narrow: the listed species, aquatic-life group and reach control. Do not turn a no-eat instruction for one species or reach into a statewide ban.
Contaminants behind Kansas restrictions
Mercury drives the statewide frequency guidance. Site-specific restrictions may involve PCBs, arsenic, pesticides, lead or cadmium. Those contaminants can be associated with particular waters or species, which is why the advisory must be checked against the catch rather than inferred from the lake’s name alone.

- Record the place precisely. Note the lake name or river reach, including a park or reservoir section when applicable.
- Identify the fish. Record the species and whether it falls into Kansas’s bottom-feeding or shellfish definitions.
- Check the current KDHE/KDWP notice. Match both the water and fish category to the advisory entry.
- Check the eater. Apply the mercury-sensitive schedule to pregnant, nursing or potentially pregnant women and children 17 or younger.
- Account for size and portion. For sensitive consumers, fish over 20 inches changes the frequency guidance; use the state serving sizes for skinless fillet before cooking.
- Follow any algae notice separately. Fish-handling advice does not authorize swimming, drinking the water or ignoring a water-contact closure.

Kansas has evaluated fish from waters affected by harmful algal blooms. Measured toxin levels in sampled fish suggested the fish were safe to eat, but the state still recommends careful handling and following the active lake notice.
Handling precautions
- Avoid skin contact with bloom-affected water.
- Wear gloves when handling wet fish and fishing equipment.
- Rinse the fish with clean, potable water.
- Remove the skin and rinse again before cooking or freezing.
- Eat only the skinless fillet portion.
- Do not eat shellfish from an affected water.
KDHE’s September 18, 2026 algae-advisory listing also directs anglers to clean fish with potable water and eat the fillet portion only. A fish-handling statement is not permission to swim, drink the water or disregard a current site-specific algae notice.

Questions about Kansas-caught versus store-bought fish
For fish caught in Kansas, KDHE is the state contact identified in the advisory. Store-bought fish, fish caught in another state and other seafood are covered by EPA/FDA advice rather than Kansas lake advisories. Use the guidance for the source of the fish you are actually eating.
When the advisory should be checked again
Fish advisories are updated annually, and algae notices can change during the fishing season. The 2026 fish notice is dated January 13, 2026; the cited KDHE algae listing was updated September 18, 2026. Check for a newer notice immediately before consuming a catch, especially after a bloom, spill or other water-quality event.
