LazerDazer is a 2016 RobotGeek maker project, not a ready-made commercial cat toy. It uses two hobby servos to pan and tilt a laser module, choosing pseudo-random positions and pauses so the dot moves without manual control. The project remains a useful introduction to Arduino robotics, but its original instructions and sketch should not be treated as a current, unattended-safe design.
For a new build, use the original project as a reference, update the power and safety arrangements, test the turret with the laser disabled, and add a physical stop, a session timer and a way for your cat to finish with something it can actually catch.
What LazerDazer does
The project published by the RobotGeek Projects Team on Hackster.io on October 18, 2016, is called LazerDazer: Arduino Laser Cat Toy. It is an open maker project that aims a laser module from a two-axis pan-and-tilt turret. The Arduino selects new pan and tilt targets, waits for a randomly selected interval, and commands the servos toward another position.
It is not vision tracking. It does not know where the cat is, detect obstacles, schedule play sessions, connect to an app or determine whether the cat has caught anything. The original sketch turns the laser on during startup and has no documented automatic shutoff or user-input control. See the original Hackster project.

The repository uses the spelling roboTurret3_lazerDazer, with “lazer” rather than “laser” in the filename. That spelling is part of the original code path.
Should you build it?
Build it as an educational robotics project if you already have compatible parts and enjoy adapting older designs. Do not reproduce it unchanged if you want a supported pet appliance, unattended operation, app control or guaranteed modern hardware compatibility.
The original RobotGeek products may have been discontinued, renamed or replaced. The project’s claim that it can work with a hobby-servo pan-and-tilt turret should be understood as a compatibility principle, not a guarantee that every modern bracket, servo and laser module will fit or operate safely.
Original hardware options
Larger RobotGeek turret
- RobotGeek Pan and Tilt Kit
- RobotGeek Laser with Mounts
- RobotGeek Geekduino or an Arduino Uno
- RobotGeek Sensor Shield
- RobotGeek 7 V / 5 A power supply
This version is the better platform for heavier attachments and later experimentation, but it is physically larger and may be harder to source as a complete setup.

Smaller mini pan-tilt turret
- Adafruit Mini Pan-Tilt Kit
- Two 9G metal-gear hobby servos
- RobotGeek Laser with Mounts
- Geekduino or Arduino Uno
- RobotGeek 6 V / 2 A power supply
The mini version is smaller and less expensive in principle, but the small servos limit the weight of the laser and any future attachment. Adafruit’s mini pan-tilt documentation is the relevant assembly reference.
What can be substituted?
An Arduino Uno-compatible board can run the basic sketch because it uses the standard Servo library and ordinary digital outputs. A different PWM pan-and-tilt mechanism may also work, but check the servo torque, mounting geometry, laser weight and mechanical limits before assuming compatibility.

- 【The First Real Random Trajectory Automatic Cat Laser Toy】The built-in dual motor moves the laser point trajectory randomly, stimulating your pet's hunting instincts and keeping them engaged.For a better play experience, it is recommended to place the toy on a table at a height of 8-35 inches. Avoid positioning it near corners.
- 【Motion-Activated】When the smart sensor detects your pet moving, the YVE LIFE cat laser toy is automatically activated and works for 15 minutes before turning off. The sensor triggers once every 2 hours to conserve battery life (normal design).with a working distance of 0-13.1 ft. The pet must be within 0–4 meters of the device to activate the sensor.
- 【3 Speed Modes Available】The toy has 3 speed modes (fast/slow/mixed) to meet different exercise needs of cats. This interactive laser cat toy provides the best experience for indoor cats.
- 【Rechargeable Large Battery】The included USB rechargeable 1200 mAh battery is fully charged in 2.5 hours and provides up to 2 days of use.The product supports plug-in use, eliminating your worries. Use a 5V/1A standard USB charger only. Fast charging may damage the battery.Ensure the device is turned off before charging for normal functionality. If charging fails, try a different USB cable or charging adapter.
- 【Angle adjustable】By freely adjusting the angle of the laser head, you can make the toy shoot random laser dots on the ground or walls to satisfy your pet's preferences and make their playtime more exciting. The laser head can be manually adjusted within a 50° angle range vertically and automatically oscillates within a 60° angle range horizontally. For indoor use only. Avoid direct sunlight on the sensor area to prevent interference.Adjust the laser head direction before use to ensure proper angle alignment. If the laser dot doesn’t move, check the mode settings or battery level.
Power is less interchangeable. Servo voltage and current requirements must match the servos actually installed. Do not copy the original 6 V or 7 V recommendations onto an unrelated board or servo arrangement. The original VIN wiring guidance was specific to the listed RobotGeek configurations; VIN is not a universal servo-power output.
Wiring in the original sketch
| Function | Arduino pin |
|---|---|
| Pan servo | Digital 10 |
| Tilt servo | Digital 11 |
| Laser module | Digital 2 |
Servos need a stable supply capable of handling their current spikes. If an external servo supply is used, the controller ground and servo-supply ground must be connected. Keep the laser’s power path appropriate for the module and avoid forcing all loads through a small board regulator.
The pin table describes the original sketch, not a universal wiring recipe. Confirm the power-routing documentation for your board and the electrical requirements of your laser module. A self-contained, current-limited laser module is different from a bare laser diode: never connect an unknown bare diode directly to an Arduino pin.
Mechanical assembly and testing
- Center both servos before attaching the horns and pan-tilt mechanism.
- Mount the laser so it is secure and aligned with the intended movement plane.
- Disconnect or physically block the laser before the first motion test.
- Test pan and tilt independently at reduced angles.
- Check for binding, cable strain and contact with mechanical stops.
- Secure the base so a cat cannot knock the turret over.
- Only enable the laser after the movement limits have been verified.
The original software limits are not guaranteed safe limits for another mechanism. Physical stops, a shroud and conservative software ranges are safer than relying on code alone.
Motion settings in the original code
const int PAN_MIN = 40;
const int PAN_MAX = 140;
const int TILT_MIN = 60;
const int TILT_MAX = 100;
const int SPEED_MIN = 10;
const int SPEED_MAX = 10;
const int ROLL_MAX = 40;
const int PAUSE_MIN = 500;
const int PAUSE_MAX = 1500;
These values select pan targets from 40 to 140 degrees, tilt targets from 60 to 100 degrees, and pauses from 500 to 1,500 milliseconds. Despite the names, SPEED_MIN and SPEED_MAX are both 10 in the supplied defaults, so speed is not actually varied by those settings.
The sketch uses Arduino’s pseudorandom functions, seeded from an unconnected analog input. The result is random-looking movement, not intelligent or truly unpredictable play.

Uploading the sketch with a current Arduino IDE
- Install the Arduino IDE.
- Connect the controller by USB.
- Choose the board under Tools > Board.
- Choose the correct serial port under Tools > Port.
- Open the
roboTurret3_lazerDazer.inofile. - Confirm that the standard
Servolibrary is available. - Compile before connecting or enabling the laser.
- Upload with the laser disconnected or physically blocked.
- Test the servos at reduced, known-safe angles.
- Connect and enable the laser only after the mechanical test passes.
Board and port labels vary by board, operating system and Arduino IDE version. If uploading fails, check the selected board, selected port, USB cable, driver requirements and whether another program is using the serial port.
The original sketch has a motion-control problem
The comments suggest interpolation, but the code includes expressions such as:
panValue = panValue++;
panValue = panValue--;
tiltValue = tiltValue++;
tiltValue = tiltValue--;
These are not reliable increment and decrement statements. The post-increment or post-decrement result is assigned back to the original variable, so the value may remain unchanged. The sketch also subsequently writes the target values directly:
panServo.write(pan_goal);
tiltServo.write(tilt_goal);
Consequently, the supplied sketch does not clearly provide the smooth interpolation implied by its comments. Depending on the servo and mechanism, movement may appear abrupt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a historical reproduction, you can run the original code while understanding this limitation. For a basic correction, update the current position one step at a time and write the current position:
if (pan_goal > panValue) {
panValue++;
} else if (pan_goal < panValue) {
panValue--;
}
if (tilt_goal > tiltValue) {
tiltValue++;
} else if (tilt_goal < tiltValue) {
tiltValue--;
}
panServo.write(panValue);
tiltServo.write(tiltValue);
This is an engineering update, not part of the original published design. A better modern implementation would use millis() instead of long blocking delays, limit the movement rate and turn the laser off when a session ends.

Laser and cat safety
Random movement does not make a laser automatically safe. Never aim the beam at a cat’s face or any person’s eyes. Keep it away from windows, mirrors, polished metal and other reflective surfaces. Use the lowest-power enclosed module appropriate for the project, and test with the beam blocked.
Add safety controls that the original sketch does not provide:
- A physical power switch or emergency stop.
- A separate laser-enable switch or properly controlled enable circuit.
- A maximum play-session timer.
- A startup delay so the operator can confirm the area is clear.
- A restricted play area and conservative software limits.
- A physical shroud or enclosure where practical.
Do not leave the original design running unattended. It turns the laser on at startup and has no documented obstacle sensor, session scheduler or automatic timeout.
Laser play also has a welfare issue: the cat can chase the dot but cannot physically catch it. Some cats become frustrated or compulsive. Stop if your cat shows stress, agitation or loss of interest, and finish with a toy, treat or other activity the cat can grab, bite or capture. A laser toy should supplement—not replace—interactive play, scratching, climbing and prey-like toys.

The Arduino resets or the servos twitch
- Disconnect the laser.
- Test one servo at a time.
- Verify the supply voltage against the servo specification.
- Confirm a shared ground between the controller and external servo supply.
- Check for thin or excessively long power wires.
- Use a suitable external servo supply where required.
- Consider appropriate bulk decoupling near the servo supply.
Brownouts, voltage drop and servo current spikes are more likely explanations than a faulty random-number routine.
The turret hits its stops
Disconnect the laser, center the servo horns, test each axis separately and reduce the angle ranges. The original 40–140 pan and 60–100 tilt values are starting points for that design, not universal safe limits.

- USB Rechargeable: The kitten toy free your mind from changing battery, simply charges it via the type-C cable (power adaptor not included), fully charged in 2.5 hours, and lasts for approximately 5 days of use. If battery is low, indicator light flashes three times to remind us.
The movement is jerky
Correct the increment logic, write intermediate positions rather than only the final target, use smaller target changes and replace long blocking delays with timed movement. Also separate pause duration from movement speed so those settings do what their names imply.
The laser stays off
Check polarity, module voltage, the module’s switching requirements and whether it needs a transistor or separate supply. Confirm that the Arduino pin is controlling a suitable driver or a self-contained module. Do not test an unknown laser diode by connecting it directly to the board.
The cat ignores it
That may be a preference rather than a hardware fault. Try shorter sessions, vary the play area, and end with a physical toy or treat. If the cat never enjoys laser play, choose a toy that provides a tangible catch.
How LazerDazer compares with newer options
| Option | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Original LazerDazer | Reproducing a simple offline Arduino project | Legacy parts, basic motion and no built-in safety controls |
| Corrected LazerDazer | Learning servos, timing and safe control design | Still requires mechanical, electrical and laser-safety work |
| Arduino Cloud Cat Play Buddy | Remote control and connected autopilot experiments | Requires a compatible IoT board, software and network setup |
| Gatoino | A newer, more configurable DIY turret | Uses paid design files and requires more involved fabrication |
| Commercial automatic toy | Minimal assembly and product support | Features, containment and session controls vary by product |
| Physical interactive toy | Play that ends with a catch | Usually needs more direct human involvement |
Arduino’s Cat Play Buddy concept uses an Arduino Nano 33 IoT or Nano RP2040 Connect for Arduino Cloud control and autopilot features. It is a different, connected design rather than an update to LazerDazer.

What to buy for a modern rebuild
Think in categories rather than searching for a still-sold “LazerDazer kit”:
- An Arduino Uno-compatible board, or an IoT-capable board if connected control is genuinely needed.
- Two hobby servos matched to the turret’s weight and supply voltage.
- A compatible pan-and-tilt bracket.
- An enclosed, low-power laser module with secure mounting.
- A regulated power supply appropriate for the servos and board.
- A physical switch or emergency stop.
- An optional beam shroud or enclosure.
- A toy or treat to provide a physical finish to the chase.
Current prices, stock and direct replacements for the older RobotGeek parts should be checked before purchase. Do not treat prices from the 2016 parts list as current, and do not assume the original RobotGeek bundle remains available.
Bottom line
LazerDazer is worth building if your goal is to learn Arduino servos, pan-and-tilt mechanics and basic random motion. It is not a finished autonomous pet-care product. The original design needs modern power checks, corrected movement logic, constrained mechanics and prominent laser safeguards before it is suitable for supervised use. If your priority is dependable scheduling or unattended operation, choose a newer enclosed design or a physical interactive toy instead.
