Yes—Litter-Robot 3 can still be worth buying if you want automated clump removal and can accommodate its large footprint, 5-pound minimum cat weight, 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi requirement (Connect model), and continuing hands-on maintenance. It is an older design, so compare the total cost of the unit, litter, liners, replacement parts and regional warranty support with newer boxes before committing.
What the Litter-Robot 3 does
Litter-Robot 3 uses a rotating globe to sift clumped urine and feces after a cat leaves. Clean litter falls back into the bed while waste drops into a carbon-filtered drawer. The cycle is automatic on the standard unit; the Litter-Robot 3 Connect adds app notifications, activity monitoring and remote controls.
The system reduces scooping, not all litter-box work. You still empty the drawer, replenish litter, inspect the sensors and globe, and periodically wash the removable components.

Allow enough room to open the drawer without striking a wall or cabinet. A mat in front of the entrance helps catch litter, but it does not replace the clearance needed for servicing.

Which cats can use it?
Whisker’s manual says every cat that might use the unit must weigh at least 5 pounds. For smaller kittens, Whisker recommends semi-automatic operation until they reach the required weight. That safety limit matters because the unit relies on the cat sensor to decide when a cycle is appropriate.
Introduce it gradually: place it beside the existing tray, use the same clumping litter, and leave the old tray available until your cat is using the globe reliably. Never force a cat inside or start with an unfamiliar litter texture if avoidance is already a problem.

How the cleaning cycle works
- The cat exits and the unit detects that the cat has left.
- After the programmed delay, the globe rotates.
- A screen separates clumps from reusable litter.
- Clumps fall into the carbon-filtered waste drawer.
- The globe returns clean litter to its normal position and becomes ready for the next use.
Keep the litter level within the manufacturer’s marked range. Too much litter can increase tracking and strain the cycle; too little can leave urine stuck to the globe.
Wi‑Fi and app requirements for Litter-Robot 3 Connect
The Connect model needs a 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi signal and IPv4 addressing. Whisker’s cited product information states that 5 GHz and IPv6 are not supported. If your router combines bands under one network name, temporarily creating or selecting a dedicated 2.4 GHz network can make setup easier. Check your router’s security and isolation settings if pairing fails.

The app can provide drawer and activity notifications and allow remote controls, but the box still performs its local cleaning cycle when the internet or app is unavailable. The non-Connect Litter-Robot 3 does not gain these smart functions simply by installing an app.
Daily, weekly and deep-cleaning routine
After setup and each refill
- Check that the globe is seated correctly and the entry is unobstructed.
- Top up with compatible clumping litter rather than mixing large amounts of a different type.
- Empty the drawer when full or when an app notification appears.
- Look for litter or waste around the sensor openings and drawer seal.
Periodic deep cleaning
- Disconnect power before disassembly.
- Remove and wash the globe, litter screen and waste drawer according to Whisker’s instructions; dry every part completely before reassembly.
- Wipe the base carefully. The base contains the cat sensor and electronics, so never submerge or soak it.
- Do not use bleach on the base. Use only a cleaner that is safe for the materials and rinse residue from cat-contact surfaces.
- Inspect the globe liner, seals, drawer area and power connection for damage.
Cleaning frequency depends on the number of cats, litter type, humidity and how much waste enters the drawer. A multi-cat home will fill the drawer faster than a single-cat home.

Odor and litter consumption: what is established
The carbon-filtered drawer and enclosed waste compartment are designed to reduce odor. Whisker also advertises litter-use reductions of up to 50%; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified laboratory result. Actual use varies with clump size, litter brand, fill level, cycle settings and how often you remove waste.
No independent lifetime, reliability or laboratory odor statistic is established here. Treat unusually strong odor as a maintenance signal: check the drawer liner, carbon filter, globe liner, litter residue and cleaning schedule before assuming the motor is failing.

Warranty, repairs and replacement parts
Whisker’s cited regional offering describes a two-year WhiskerCare warranty for the Connect-era product. Warranty terms, eligibility and availability vary by country and can change; confirm the purchaser’s region, serial number, purchase date and current terms with Whisker.
Whisker still lists replacement parts after the original warranty period. The dedicated Litter-Robot 3 replacement base is intended for out-of-warranty units, but the listing states that it does not include Connect Wi‑Fi or a power supply. It is therefore not a drop-in smart upgrade or a complete replacement package.
