Love Birdwatching? These Backyard Visitors Are a Fall Treat

Fall migration brings different birds to different backyards, depending on region, habitat, and food. Learn how native plants, water, safe windows, and clean feeders can help visiting birds without assuming every migrant will use a feeder.

Fall migration can bring new birds through your yard, but the visitors you see depend on your region, habitat, and food sources. Rather than expect one universal list, look for birds using local native plants, water, trees, and safe shelter—and remember that many migrants do not visit seed feeders.

For example, an Associated Press reporter described seeing a varied group of birds while birding around Boston during fall migration. That account is a local observation, not a national ranking or a checklist for every backyard.

Why does your backyard change in fall?

Migration makes fall a season of change: birds may pass through, move to wintering areas, or stop to feed and rest. Which birds appear varies with location and habitat, so a yard in one region may have a very different cast from a yard elsewhere.

Native plants can provide fruits, seeds, insects, and shelter. Fresh, open water can also help birds that stop to drink and bathe. Some migrants may visit feeders for options such as suet or mealworms, but many do not come to feeders and may not eat ordinary seed.

Fall visitors depend on where you live

Birds reported in the Boston-area fall-migration account included American Robins, Blue Jays, Northern Cardinals, American Goldfinches, Chimney Swifts, Northern Flickers, Fish Crows, Killdeer, Baltimore Orioles, Gray Catbirds, a Veery, and a Great Horned Owl. This is an illustrative set of observations, not a verified list of nine common backyard visitors. The account does not establish that every bird was migrating or likely to visit a feeder.

To build a useful local list, consider your region and the places birds can find food and cover. The Cornell Lab’s All About Birds guide provides species information; local expertise can help clarify which birds are expected in your area and season.

How can you make a yard more welcoming to migrants?

  1. Grow locally appropriate native plants. Native plants can provide fruits, seeds, insects, and shelter. Choose plants suited to your region and yard.
  2. Provide fresh, open water. Keep water available and clean it regularly.
  3. Offer feeders as one option, not a guarantee. Some birds may use suet or mealworms, while many migrants do not visit feeders or eat ordinary seed.
  4. Clean feeders regularly. Feeder care is part of responsible feeding; follow guidance from the National Audubon Society.
  5. Make windows safer for birds. Audubon recommends making windows bird-safe as part of caring for birds around the home.
  6. Do not remove feeders to trigger migration. Cornell Lab guidance says there is no reason to take feeders down to encourage migration; day length is a major migration cue.

How can you identify birds passing through?

Observe a bird’s shape, behavior, markings, and call, and note where you saw it. The Cornell Lab’s All About Birds guide can help with identification and species information. Merlin Bird ID can also support identification, but an app is not a substitute for checking whether a species is expected in your location.

Birding by sound can be useful when birds are hidden by foliage. The Associated Press reported on Merlin’s sound-identification features in 2023; treat any usage figures from that report as dated rather than current.

FEED GARDEN Bird Feeder for Outdoors Hanging, 13" 6 Ports, Clear Tube
  • BUILT FOR SMALL SONGBIRDS — AND IT KEEPS THE BIG ONES OUT: Six small ports with 1.4" perches are sized for finches, chickadees, sparrows and nuthatches. Larger birds like blue jays, grackles and cardinals can't get a grip, so they stop raiding the tube and flinging the small seed on the ground to get at the big kernels. If you want cardinals or woodpeckers too, pair this with a platform or hopper feeder — this one is deliberately the small-bird station.
  • WIDE LIFT-TOP + SEE-THROUGH TUBE — REFILL IN SECONDS: Lift the metal lid straight up and pour; the opening is wide enough that you are not funnelling seed through a narrow neck. The clear tube shows the level from across the yard, so you refill before it runs empty instead of checking by opening it. Holds 1.5lb of sunflower, safflower or mixed seed — a small tube on purpose: seed gets eaten before it can sit and go stale.
  • HOW TO CLEAN IT: The lid lifts off and the tube is clear, so you can see exactly what needs cleaning. The base is fixed — not removable — so here is what works: tip the feeder upside down and tap to empty packed seed, run a bottle brush or pipe cleaner in through the ports, rinse, then stand it upside down until fully dry before refilling. Do this every 2-3 refills and after any spell of wet weather, so damp seed never sits at the bottom.
  • METAL LID, BASE AND PORTS: The lid, base, perches and all six port surrounds are metal, so beaks and claws land on metal rather than thin plastic; the seed tube itself is clear polycarbonate, which is what lets you see the level. Note: this is not a squirrel-proof feeder — the ports are open and a determined squirrel can reach seed. If squirrels are a problem in your yard, hang it from a pole with a baffle, which is what owners who have no squirrel trouble do.
  • HANG IT WHERE YOU CAN WATCH — POLE, BRANCH OR SHEPHERD'S HOOK (POLE NOT INCLUDED): The metal hanger fits a standard shepherd's hook, deck pole or tree branch. Most owners hang it within sight of a kitchen or living-room window — finches find a new feeder within days, and you get the show from inside. Works all four seasons, with the busiest months being late autumn and winter when wild food runs short. A ready gift for a parent, grandparent or anyone who watches birds.

Which birds will I see during fall migration?

It depends on your location, habitat, and available food. A Boston-area observation offers one local example, but it should not be treated as a national checklist. Consult a regional resource or local birding expertise for likely visitors near you.

What is the best way to support birds passing through?

Prioritize locally appropriate native plants, fresh open water, safe windows, and clean feeders if you offer them. These measures support birds whether or not they use a feeder.
