Yes—but only in a limited, statistical sense. A 2025 genome-wide association study (GWAS) of golden retrievers found canine behavior-related genetic regions near genes that also showed associations with human psychiatric, temperamental, or cognitive traits. The overlap suggests that some biological pathways may be shared across species. It does not show that dogs and people have the same personality, that one gene determines behavior, or that the results can diagnose a pet or person.
What the golden retriever study actually tested
Researchers analyzed behavior using the Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ), a standardized owner questionnaire. The paper reports 14 GWAS analyses covering 14 behavioral traits in approximately 1,000 golden retrievers. A University of Cambridge summary describes the analyzed set as 1,300 dogs; because those figures differ, neither should be treated as a settled exact cohort count without consulting the full methods and cohort accounting.
The analysis identified 12 genome-wide significant loci across eight traits and nine additional suggestive loci. A locus is a stretch of DNA statistically associated with a measured trait; it is not automatically a single causal gene.
How the researchers connected dog findings with human traits
After identifying canine loci, the team selected 18 positional candidate genes—the genes located near those associated regions. They then used a human phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) in the Atlas of Complex Trait Genetics to ask whether those genes had reported associations with human psychiatric, temperamental, or cognitive traits.

In the reported PheWAS, 12 of the 18 candidate genes were associated with at least one of 190 human traits. The breakdown was seven of 12 genes from genome-wide loci and five of nine genes from suggestive loci. This is a cross-species comparison of statistical associations, not proof that the same DNA variant works identically in dogs and humans.
The headline genes and what they do—and do not—show
PTPN1 and dog-directed aggression
PTPN1 was the gene nearest a locus associated with dog-directed aggression. In the human database analysis, PTPN1 was associated with measures including intelligence, educational attainment, and major depressive disorder.
Those findings do not mean PTPN1 causes aggression in a particular dog or depression in a particular person. The gene is a positional candidate, and the human results are associations from a database of complex traits. They do not establish a shared causal mechanism.

ROMO1 and trainability
ROMO1 lay within a genome-wide significant locus for trainability in the dogs. Its human associations included intelligence, depression, irritability, and sensitivity or hurt feelings.

What “associated with” means here
A GWAS compares genetic variants with measured differences in a study population. When a region reaches a genome-wide significance threshold, the result is unlikely to be explained by random variation under the study’s statistical model. The associated region may contain several genes, regulatory elements, or correlated variants.

A nearby gene is therefore a candidate, not a confirmed cause. The PheWAS adds another layer: it tests whether a candidate gene has associations with many human phenotypes. Seeing overlap supports hypotheses about potentially conserved biology, but it cannot establish that:
- the same variant is responsible in both species;
- the candidate gene is the causal gene in the canine locus;
- the effect is large enough to matter for an individual; or
- genetics outweighs learning, environment, health, sex, training, and life experience.
Does this mean personality is inherited?
Behavior can have a heritable component, but heritability is a population statistic. It describes how much variation in a trait within a particular population and environment is associated with genetic differences. It does not give a percentage of an individual’s personality that is “genetic.”

Could this lead to veterinary treatments?
The findings may help researchers investigate why some dogs are more vulnerable to fear, stress, or other behavioral problems. The Cambridge summary discusses possible relevance to veterinary care, including a hypothetical connection between fearfulness and anxiety-related biology.
That is a research direction, not clinical guidance. The study does not show that an existing human anxiety medication treats canine fearfulness, and it does not validate a genetic test for choosing medication, predicting aggression, or selecting a “better” pet. A dog with sudden, severe, or dangerous behavior needs assessment by a veterinarian; pain, neurological disease, medication effects, and environmental factors can mimic or worsen behavioral problems.

What owners should take from the findings
- Do not treat a breed or DNA result as destiny. A statistical association cannot predict an individual dog’s conduct.
- Use behavior as the immediate evidence. Reward-based training, careful management, enrichment, and veterinary evaluation remain practical tools.
- Be cautious with commercial genetic claims. This study did not establish a consumer test that can label a dog aggressive, fearful, intelligent, or trainable.
- Interpret human parallels narrowly. A gene associated with a human educational or mood measure does not explain a dog’s personality in human terms.
Why the result is interesting despite its limits
Dogs and humans share a long history, many biological systems, and exposure to some similar environments. Finding that canine candidate genes also appear in human trait-association data gives scientists specific pathways to investigate rather than relying only on broad behavioral analogies.
The result is strongest as a map for future work: replicate the loci in larger and more diverse canine populations, identify the causal variants, test biological mechanisms, and examine how genes interact with training and environment. Until those steps are done, the appropriate conclusion is shared statistical signals—not shared destiny.
Bottom line
The study provides evidence that some genes near dog behavior-associated loci also have human psychiatric, temperamental, or cognitive associations. It supports the possibility of partly shared biological roots, while leaving individual behavior deeply dependent on many genes and on life experience. “Associated with” is the accurate phrase; “this gene causes aggression, intelligence, or depression” is not.
