Meet Ikaria wariootia, an Early Bilaterian Found in Ancient South Australian Fossils

A 2020 fossil discovery from South Australia reveals a tiny, wormlike early bilaterian. Here is what Ikaria wariootia tells us about animal evolution—and what it cannot prove about ancestry.

Ikaria wariootia was a tiny, wormlike organism that lived more than 555 million years ago in what is now South Australia. Described in 2020, it is considered one of the oldest known bilaterians—animals with a front and back, broadly symmetrical sides, and a gut with openings at both ends. That makes it important to animal evolution, but it does not prove that this particular species was the direct ancestor of every animal or of humans.

What was Ikaria wariootia?

Ikaria wariootia is known from body impressions in the Ediacara Member of South Australia. The fossils preserve a small, simple, wormlike form with an apparent front-to-back difference. Researchers described the species in a 2020 paper, “Discovery of the oldest bilaterian from the Ediacaran of South Australia.”

The fossils are more than 555 million years old, according to the University of California, Riverside’s 2020 discovery report. They come from the broader Ediacara Biota interval, which NASA dates to roughly 571–539 million years ago. Those figures describe different levels of dating: the wider geological interval is not the exact age of every individual fossil horizon.

The genus name, Ikaria, refers to a place of creation in Aboriginal Australian mythology, while wariootia refers to the Warioota Creek area where the fossils were found.

Why scientists call it a bilaterian

Bilaterians are animals organized around a front and a back, with two broadly symmetrical sides. Most also have a through-gut: food enters at one opening and waste leaves through another. This body plan includes vertebrates such as humans, as well as insects, mollusks, worms and many other invertebrates.

Ikaria shows features consistent with that arrangement. Its body appears to have a distinct anterior (front) and posterior (rear), rather than the radial organization seen in animals such as jellyfish. The proposed association with a moving burrow also supports the idea of an active, directional animal rather than a stationary organism.

What the fossils show—and what they do not

Evidence What it records How securely it is linked to Ikaria
Ikaria wariootia body impressions Overall shape and possible front-to-back differentiation Direct fossil evidence for the organism’s form
Helminthoidichnites trace fossils Movement through sediment and displacement of surrounding material The 2020 authors proposed that Ikaria may have made them; no fossil captures the animal making a burrow

The burrow connection is therefore an interpretation, not an observed act. The body fossils and traces are found in the same general Ediacaran setting, and their dimensions and morphology are compatible, but trace fossils rarely identify their maker with certainty.

Was Ikaria the first animal?

Not in any definitive sense. The 2020 study presented Ikaria as one of the oldest known total-group bilaterians and as a possible link between Ediacaran fossils and the later animal record. Other organisms in the Ediacaran are older, and the earliest animal fossil record is difficult to interpret because many organisms had simple bodies or are known only from traces.

Calling Ikaria “the first animal” turns a qualified scientific interpretation into a certainty the evidence does not provide. Its importance is that it offers unusually informative evidence for an early mobile bilaterian body plan.

Is Ikaria the ancestor of humans or all animals?

No direct ancestry has been demonstrated. Humans are bilaterians, so Ikaria belongs to the broad branch of animal evolution that eventually includes us. But being an early member of that branch is not the same as being its direct parent.

Scientists would need a much clearer sequence of descendants, shared derived features and an evolutionary relationship tying this species specifically to later lineages. The fossil’s age and bilaterian characteristics establish its place as an early candidate, not a proven ancestor of humans.

The phrase “ancestor of all animals” is also too broad because not every animal is bilaterian. Sponges and cnidarians, for example, lie outside Bilateria. Even within bilaterians, a very old species can represent a close relative of the lineage leading to later groups rather than the single species from which all those groups descended.

What did Ikaria look like?

It was a small, soft-bodied, wormlike animal preserved as impressions in ancient sediment. The fossils indicate a simple body with a directional axis—front and back—rather than elaborate limbs, shells or hard skeletons. Because soft tissues decay quickly, the fossils do not provide a detailed portrait of skin, muscles or internal organs.

The most informative visual clues are the body outline and the way the organism appears to have interacted with sediment. Those clues are consistent with an animal that moved through the seafloor and had a through-gut, but they do not reveal every aspect of its biology.

How scientists connect the body fossil to a burrow

  1. Compare size and shape: Researchers examined whether the body impressions could plausibly fit the form inferred from Helminthoidichnites traces.
  2. Look for directional movement: The traces record sediment displacement consistent with an animal moving forward, which fits a body with a front and rear.
  3. Check the geological setting: The fossils occur in Ediacaran sediments where the burrows are also found.
  4. Keep the identification provisional: Because the animal and trace are not physically joined in a single observed event, the proposed maker-trace relationship remains an interpretation.

Why the discovery matters

The Ediacaran Period predates the Cambrian diversification commonly associated with the rapid appearance of many animal groups. Fossils from this earlier interval often preserve unfamiliar body forms, making it difficult to determine which were animals and how they lived.

Ikaria adds a comparatively clear example of a directional, mobile organism with features expected in an early bilaterian. It helps connect the Ediacaran record to later animal evolution without requiring the claim that one fossil species sits at the root of every animal lineage.

  • Cast of the large toe ungual from the towering bipedal carnivorous dinosaur of the Jurassic
  • The original claw was unearthed in the Morrison formation at the Cleveland-Lloyd Quarry in central Utah
  • Detailed cast replica. 7 inches. Museum quality resin cast made in the USA

Nature reported that the study involved more than 100 fossils and associated burrowing tracks; that figure is secondary reporting rather than a quotation from the primary paper. The central result does not depend on treating the count as proof of ancestry.

What remains uncertain

  • Whether every Helminthoidichnites trace attributed to the study was made by Ikaria.
  • Exactly where Ikaria falls within the bilaterian family tree.
  • How its soft tissues, feeding behavior and life cycle worked.
  • Whether later discoveries or analyses will alter its status as one of the oldest known bilaterians.

The safest conclusion is therefore specific: Ikaria wariootia is a strong candidate for an early bilaterian from South Australia’s Ediacaran rocks, not a demonstrated direct ancestor of all animals or of humans.
