Motty was a male elephant calf born at Chester Zoo on 11 July 1978 to Sheba, an Asian elephant, and Jumbolino (also called Bubbles), an African elephant bull. He died there 10 days later, but remains the only confirmed hybrid of an African elephant and an Asian elephant—two species placed in different genera.
Why Motty’s birth was scientifically extraordinary
African elephants belong to the genus Loxodonta, while Asian elephants belong to Elephas. Motty therefore represented an intergeneric hybrid, a cross between animals separated at the genus level rather than merely different breeds or populations.
The mating occurred at Chester Zoo in 1978. His mother, Sheba, was an Asian elephant; his father, the African bull Jumbolino, was also known as Bubbles. No other African–Asian elephant hybrid has been confirmed, which is why Guinness World Records lists Motty as the “rarest elephant.”
What Motty looked like
Motty’s body combined recognizable features from both parental lineages. Contemporary descriptions recorded an overall form closer to an African elephant, alongside distinct Asian characteristics.

| Feature | African elephant tendency | Asian elephant tendency | Motty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ears | Large, broad ears | Smaller, rounded ears | Large African-shaped ears with pointed lobes |
| Forehead and back | More sloping forehead; two prominent back humps are typical | More rounded forehead; a single central hump is typical | Sloping forehead and an Asian-style center hump |
| Trunk tip | Usually two finger-like projections | Usually one finger-like projection | One trunk finger |
| Feet | Typically four front and three hind toenails | Typically five front and four hind toenails | Five front and four hind toenails |
| Legs | Longer, relatively slim legs | Shorter, more column-like legs | Long, slim, African-like legs |
Observers also noted a deeply wrinkled trunk and a long tail. The mixture was not a vague intermediate appearance: individual traits aligned more closely with one parent or the other, making the combination especially informative to elephant specialists.
How scientists established that he was a hybrid
Parentage and anatomy
The documented pairing of Sheba and Jumbolino provided the first line of evidence. Motty’s mosaic anatomy supplied a second: his ears and legs resembled African elephants, while his toenail pattern and single trunk finger matched Asian elephants. The Asian-style central body hump added another visible Asian trait to an otherwise more African-looking frame.

Immunological evidence
After Motty’s death, researchers performed immunological tests on preserved dry skin. The tissue behaved in a way described as similar to a mule, an established hybrid of a horse and donkey. That reaction supported the conclusion drawn from his parentage and morphology.
No soft-tissue samples were retained for later testing. Modern genomic analyses therefore cannot be assumed to have been performed on Motty, and the published evidence rests on the historical breeding record, physical examination and those immunological experiments.

How long Motty lived—and what killed him
Motty survived for 10 days after his birth. A post-mortem examination attributed his death to necrotic enterocolitis and Escherichia coli septicaemia. Necrotic enterocolitis is severe inflammation and tissue death in the intestine; septicaemia is a life-threatening bloodstream infection. The recorded diagnosis describes an acute infectious illness, not a finding that hybrid status itself was the direct cause of death.
Where Motty is now
His skin was preserved as a mounted taxiderm specimen. Guinness World Records and historical elephant-medicine accounts report that it is held by the Natural History Museum in London.

Why Motty still matters
Motty gave scientists a rare opportunity to examine how traits from two deeply separated elephant lineages could appear in one individual. His anatomy showed that hybridization could produce a viable calf, at least briefly, while the immunological results provided independent support for his unusual parentage.

His case also illustrates the limits of historical specimens. The preserved skin allowed later testing, but the absence of retained soft tissue prevents researchers from applying every modern laboratory method. Motty’s scientific importance therefore comes from the evidence that survived: zoo breeding records, detailed anatomical observations, post-mortem findings and immunology.
