Meet Poopcopter: AI drone that takes your dog poop to new heights. The Poopcopter is a real, patent-pending experimental prototype built by Minnesota inventor Caleb Olson, but it is not documented as a consumer product you can buy. The project combines computer vision, machine learning, drone navigation, and a rotating mechanical scoop.
In the intended workflow, the drone scans a defined yard, identifies dog waste, lands over the target, closes its pickup mechanism, and carries the waste to a disposal location. The intriguing idea is real; the claims of everyday reliability, retail availability, and fully autonomous cleanup are not yet established.
Key takeaways
- The Poopcopter is a real, patent-pending prototype demonstrated by Minnesota inventor Caleb Olson in September 2024, not a documented retail product.
- The dog-poop drone combines a camera, real-time computer vision, machine-learning models, precision landing, and a rotating mechanical scoop.
- The biggest technical challenge is landing accurately over a small, irregular target; ordinary GPS guidance can be off by a few feet.
- The prototype is described as grass-optimized, but no published accuracy rate, battery life, payload limit, safety test, or controlled performance study is available.
- Dog owners who need a solution today should use a conventional long-handle or claw dog poop scooper rather than wait for a Poopcopter launch.
Is the Poopcopter real?
Yes. The Poopcopter is a real experimental drone project built by Minnesota inventor Caleb Olson, but the available evidence describes a public demonstration prototype rather than a consumer appliance that shoppers can order. Olson’s official website lists a Poopcopter demonstration on September 27, 2024, a Minnedemo40 presentation on September 17, 2024, and a television interview dated October 15, 2024.
That distinction matters because online descriptions can make the project sound like an autonomous robot already available for every backyard. The reviewed material does not establish a retail launch date, purchase page, public bill of materials, build guide, or announced production model.

How does the AI dog-poop drone work?
The Poopcopter uses a drone-mounted camera to scan a user-defined area, such as a backyard, while computer-vision and machine-learning systems search the live camera feed for dog waste. After identifying a possible target, the drone attempts to position itself above the waste, land, close its pickup mechanism, and fly to a disposal point.
Caleb Olson described the scanning process to PetaPixel as follows: “The Poopcopter is capable of scanning areas defined by a user, your backyard for example, and as it scans it’s performing real-time computer vision using the camera which is inside the drone.” PetaPixel’s October 2024 report attributes the statement to Olson.
1. Scanning the yard
The drone patrols a defined area and uses its camera to collect imagery. Computer-vision processing then attempts to distinguish dog waste from grass, soil, leaves, shadows, and other objects. The research confirms the intended real-time detection approach, but it does not provide a measured detection accuracy or show how the system performs across different lighting, weather, grass heights, or types of waste.
2. Landing over the target
Once the system identifies waste, the drone must make a much more precise landing than a normal GPS-guided flight requires. PetaPixel reported that GPS-based automated landings can be off by a few feet, which is significant when the target is a small, irregular object. Olson therefore added off-board machine-learning models to improve the landing approach.

A drone can navigate to the correct part of a yard and still miss the waste by enough distance to make pickup impossible. No published landing-success rate is available.
3. Closing the pickup mechanism
The prototype carries a bell-shaped container fitted with geared leaves or flaps. The mechanism remains open while the drone lands, then rotates so the leaves close around the waste. FOX 9 reported that the pickup mechanism rotates 30 degrees to close the bottom of the device and that the prototype was made with a 3D printer. FOX 9’s October 2024 report also said Olson had spent one year researching and designing the invention.

The grass-focused design is not a minor detail. The mechanism went through iterations before Olson settled on the version described in the reporting, indicating that surface conditions, target position, and pickup geometry affect the design. That history shows engineering development, not a verified performance advantage on grass.
4. Carrying and releasing the waste
After pickup, the drone is intended to carry the waste to a designated disposal location. Reversing the mechanism’s rotation can open the container. A box or van may provide a more controlled drop point than releasing waste directly from the air.

Hackaday’s engineering coverage records that concern and reports Olson’s response that a beacon-equipped disposal box could make the drop more controlled.
What is proven, and what is still unknown?
The Poopcopter has been publicly demonstrated and described by its inventor and multiple media outlets. The available evidence supports the existence of the project, its use of computer vision and machine learning, and its custom rotating pickup container. The evidence does not support claims that the system works perfectly, operates fully unattended in ordinary yards, or is ready for general sale.

Does the Poopcopter actually work?
The careful answer is that the Poopcopter has demonstrated a working concept, but its real-world reliability is unknown. Public reporting establishes that Olson built and showed the system; it does not provide a controlled study, independently measured success rate, or repeatability data at household scale.
Several variables could affect performance: the size and condition of the waste, grass height, uneven ground, wind, propeller downwash, camera visibility, GPS error, battery capacity, and the weight of the collected material. The reviewed research supplies no verified figures for those operating limits, so those figures should not be inferred from the prototype’s demonstrations.

- 【For All Surface】Picks up from all Surfaces -Easy to Pick up waste from all surfaces - Grass, gravel, concrete, dirt water, etc.Not only great for poo, but other messes and yard work, such as pine cones and leaves.
The concept also raises ordinary drone-safety and privacy questions. The available material does not establish permission to operate over neighboring property or public spaces. Any future operator would need to consider applicable aviation rules, local restrictions, people and animals nearby, property boundaries, and the consequences of dropping waste outside the intended disposal area.
Who invented the Poopcopter?
Caleb Olson, a Minnesota inventor and builder, created the Poopcopter. Olson told FOX 9, “Everyone’s got a dog. Everyone’s got this problem. So it felt like a big problem that felt worth my time to try addressing.” FOX 9 attributed the quote to Olson in 2024.
Olson also described the intended benefit as “end to end, no touching poop.” The project is deliberately playful, but the underlying engineering problem is genuine: detecting a small object, navigating to it, collecting it without propeller airflow causing a mess, and disposing of it reliably.
Can you buy the Poopcopter?
No reviewed source shows that consumers can currently buy a Poopcopter. The most accurate description is a patent-pending prototype and demonstration project. There is no supported retail price, release date, public component list, or verified ordering channel in the available research.
Olson has discussed two possible future directions: selling a consumer version or creating a commercial dog-waste-cleaning service. FOX 9 reported a related idea involving a box or van that could serve multiple yards. Those are inventor-suggested possibilities, not an announced business, available service, or confirmed product plan.
What can you use instead of a Poopcopter?
If the goal is easier dog-waste cleanup today, a conventional dog poop scooper is the practical alternative. A manual scooper lacks autonomous detection and flight, but it is simpler, available now, and does not require a camera system, machine-learning software, batteries, or a safe aerial disposal workflow.

Petco’s dog-waste cleanup category lists rake-and-scoop sets, claw scoopers, fold-away scoopers, and waste bags. For readers who want to reduce bending and keep their hands farther from the waste, the manufacturer lists the Arm & Hammer Claw Poop Scooper with a 27-inch extending handle, one-handed pickup, and intended use on grass, gravel, and concrete. Those manufacturer specifications are not the same as independent performance testing.
| Option | Availability | Automation | Hands-on contact | Surface information | Complexity |

What would a commercial Poopcopter service require?
A commercial service could potentially centralize disposal, use a beacon-equipped collection box, and avoid asking each dog owner to maintain a complicated drone system. However, the research contains no verified pet-waste removal company, service area, pricing, regulatory approval, or operating model associated with Olson’s idea.
A future version would also need dependable detection, safe flight around people and animals, reliable pickup and release, weather tolerance, battery and charging procedures, property-owner permissions, and a way to handle failed pickups. Until those details are demonstrated and documented, commercial yard cleanup remains a possible direction rather than a service readers can book under the Poopcopter name.
Why the Poopcopter matters
The Poopcopter is interesting because it applies advanced tools to an unmistakably ordinary task. Computer vision, machine learning, drone navigation, and 3D-printed mechanical design are being combined to automate a job most people currently solve with a bag and a scoop.
Olson summarized the project’s broader appeal to FOX 9: “It’d be cool to see it go any direction, to be honest. It’s just something that I’ve kind of cooked up in my basement, and it actually has like real world value.” PetaPixel also quoted his description of the machine as “kind of like a UFO except it’s abducting dog poop instead of people.” The humor attracts attention, but the prototype’s lasting value may be as a maker experiment that exposes the difficult details hidden inside a seemingly simple automation problem.
