There is no scientifically settled “world’s most aggressive bird.” The southern cassowary is often labeled the world’s most dangerous bird because it is large, powerful and capable of severe injury, but danger is not the same as constant or unprovoked aggression. Queensland’s environment department says southern cassowaries are “not typically aggressive unless provoked or cornered.”
The more accurate answer depends on what you measure: defensive attacks on people, nest dives, territorial behavior, frequency of encounters or injury severity.
Why the cassowary gets the reputation
A southern cassowary can stand up to 2 metres tall and weigh as much as 76 kilograms, according to Queensland Government information. Its inner toe carries a dagger-shaped claw reported at up to 120 millimetres. Those traits make a close encounter potentially dangerous, especially if the bird is cornered or provoked.
That physical potential explains the “dangerous bird” label used in popular references, including the Library of Congress. It does not establish a worldwide aggression ranking.

What the attack records actually show
Christopher P. Kofron’s review in the Journal of Zoology examined 221 reported southern cassowary attacks in Queensland. Of those, 150 involved people. Three quarters of the recorded attacks on people involved cassowaries that had previously been fed by humans.
The incidents were commonly associated with food expectation or defense. That pattern points to learned food-seeking and perceived threat as important triggers—not to cassowaries routinely attacking people without provocation. The study is a historical review of recorded incidents, not a current worldwide attack rate.

“Aggressive” can mean several different things
Bird behavior cannot be ranked fairly with one undefined adjective. A species that repeatedly dives at people near a nest may be highly defensive in one setting, while a cassowary encounter may carry greater potential injury if the bird is cornered. Those are different risks.
| Comparison question | What it tells you | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| What triggered the encounter? | Nest defense, food expectation, territorial conflict or self-defense | Behavior toward an intruder is not the same as unprovoked aggression |
| How does the bird respond? | Diving, chasing, pecking, kicking or posturing | The behavior changes the practical risk to a person |
| How often do people encounter it? | Common urban species and rarely seen rainforest species have different exposure levels | Encounter frequency affects the number of reported incidents |
| How serious can an injury be? | Potential severity of the species’ defensive action | “Dangerous” describes consequences, not necessarily temperament |
| How strong is the evidence? | Systematic records, official guidance or anecdotes | Anecdotes cannot establish a global superlative |
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service notes that most birds show aggressive behavior when they feel threatened. It also describes nesting-season aggression in mockingbirds and several raptors. Those examples demonstrate context-specific defense; they do not prove that any one of those species is the world’s most aggressive.

How to behave around a southern cassowary
- Do not feed it. Prior feeding appears in most of the recorded human attacks in Kofron’s review.
- Do not approach or corner it. Give the bird a clear route away from you.
- Keep your distance rather than panicking. Ordinary presence is not itself evidence that an attack is imminent.
- Secure food and supervise pets. Food-conditioned wildlife and defensive encounters can create avoidable conflict.
For nesting birds generally, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service advises staying out of the immediate nesting area where possible and never handling wild birds. A bird defending a nest is responding to a perceived intruder, so backing away is safer than testing its warning behavior.
The bird is ecologically important, not a villain
Southern cassowaries disperse rainforest seeds, including seeds that benefit from passing through the birds’ digestive systems. In Queensland they are described as secretive and solitary, and the species is endangered there.

Major threats include habitat loss and fragmentation, vehicle strikes and introduced predators such as dogs and pigs. A Queensland Government page reported a CSIRO estimate of up to 4,400 cassowaries in the Wet Tropics in 2014. That is a dated regional estimate, not a current count for every cassowary population.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So what is the “most aggressive” bird?
No source in the available evidence provides a comparable global dataset that measures aggression across bird species. Naming a different bird as the universal winner would therefore be guesswork. The defensible conclusion is narrower: cassowaries are among the birds capable of inflicting serious injury, but their documented attacks are often linked to defense or human feeding, and they are not typically aggressive when left alone.

If a comparison is made, it should state its metric—such as nest-defense dives, attacks per human encounter or injury severity—and identify the geography, time period and evidence used. Without those limits, “world’s most aggressive bird” is a catchy label rather than a scientific finding.
