Meghalaya study finds a changing mix of potential malaria mosquitoes, with many linked to rice fields

A 2023 study in two Meghalaya districts found rare forest-associated malaria vectors and abundant Anopheles species whose larvae occurred in rice fields. The findings suggest changing habitat associations, not proven replacement or a confirmed shift in malaria transmission.

Short answer: A peer-reviewed study published in 2023 found that mosquito species composition in two Meghalaya districts differs from the traditional picture of malaria vectors concentrated in forests. The historically important forest-associated Anopheles baimaii and Anopheles minimus were rare in the sampled collections, while An. maculatus, An. pseudowillmori, An. jeyporiensis and An. nitidus were abundant.

Larvae of several abundant species were found in rice fields. That supports a change in habitat association, potentially linked to land-use change, but it does not prove that malaria transmission has moved from forests to fields or that any one species has replaced the established vectors.

What changed in Meghalaya’s mosquito community?

The paper, published in Infection, Genetics and Evolution as article 105450 (2023; DOI 10.1016/j.meegid.2023.105450), identified 19 Anopheles species from 2,575 specimens. Meghalaya has more than 24 recorded Anopheles species, so appearance-based identification alone can be difficult.

Finding What the study reported
Forest-associated species An. baimaii and An. minimus, traditionally important malaria vectors in northeast India, were rare in the sampled collections.
Most abundant species An. maculatus, An. pseudowillmori, An. jeyporiensis and An. nitidus were abundant; the paper did not provide a percentage for each species across all collections.
West Khasi Hills An. maculatus accounted for 39% of light-trap collections in this district.
West Jaintia Hills An. pseudowillmori accounted for 45% of light-trap collections in this district.
Rice-field habitat Larvae of several abundant species were collected in rice fields, indicating that cultivated landscapes can provide breeding sites.

The percentages apply to the study’s light-trap collections in the named districts and are not statewide estimates.

Are malaria mosquitoes moving from forests to rice fields?

What the evidence supports

The collections show a different mix of Anopheles species from the traditional forest-vector picture. Adults were collected around homes, and larvae of abundant species were found in rice fields. Together, those observations indicate that potential vectors are using village and agricultural environments in the sampled areas.

What the evidence does not prove

The investigators did not test the mosquitoes for Plasmodium, the malaria parasite. Abundance therefore indicates potential epidemiological importance, not confirmed infection or transmission. The study also did not demonstrate that mosquitoes physically moved out of forests, that rice fields caused a statewide increase in malaria, or that the abundant species replaced An. baimaii and An. minimus as transmission vectors.

Why might the ecology be changing?

The authors describe several interacting explanations. None was tested as a single cause, so they should be treated as plausible drivers rather than a proven chain of events.

Rice cultivation

Expanded rice-growing areas can hold shallow, sunlit water suitable for mosquito larvae. Catherine Walton of the University of Manchester noted that rice fields cover substantial land in the region and could produce large numbers of mosquitoes. The presence of larvae in the fields supports this habitat link, but it does not by itself establish increased malaria transmission.

  • LARGE PROTECTION ZONE: Ortho Home Defense Mosquito Kill & Prevent protects up to 4,300 sq. ft. against mosquitoes and larvae (Aedes and Culex spp)

Local deforestation and land-use change

When forest is cleared or fragmented, the balance of breeding and resting habitats can change. That may make village edges and farmland more suitable for some species while reducing conditions favored by forest-associated vectors. The two-district study cannot measure how every land-cover change has affected mosquito populations across Meghalaya.

Long-lasting insecticide-treated nets

Widespread use of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) and other control measures may suppress mosquitoes that commonly enter houses or rest near people. The authors suggest that this could have contributed to the low numbers of historically dominant forest vectors. The study did not isolate the effect of LLINs from land use, climate or other interventions.

How was the study conducted?

  1. Field training began in 2018, followed by collections from 2019 through 2022; some months were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  2. Researchers sampled adult mosquitoes in homes and collected larvae in and around villages in West Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills.
  3. The reported account includes 1,389 adult collections and 144 larval collections, with 2,575 Anopheles specimens analyzed.
  4. Specimens were first screened by morphology, then identified with allele-specific PCR and cytochrome oxidase I (COI) DNA barcoding.

Molecular confirmation was important because closely related Anopheles species can look alike, and misidentification can lead to poorly targeted control measures.

What does this mean for malaria risk in Meghalaya?

The paper appeared during a period of declining malaria mortality in the state. A 2024 account citing state figures reported 237 malaria deaths in 2007, 40 in 2015 and three in 2021. Those are historical figures from the reported state context, not a current statewide incidence estimate.

A decline in deaths does not remove the need to track changing vector communities. If species that breed in rice fields become locally important, surveillance focused only on forest habitats could miss where immature mosquitoes are developing. Conversely, finding many mosquitoes in a field does not show that they are infected or that nearby residents face a measured increase in malaria risk.

What are the study’s main limitations?

  • Geographic coverage: Sampling was limited to West Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills. Conditions in other Meghalaya districts may differ; an outside expert, SR Hajong of North Eastern Hill University, said the findings should not be generalized to the whole state.
  • No parasite testing: The mosquitoes were not tested for Plasmodium, so transmission competence remains unknown.
  • Incomplete habitat survey: The work did not provide a full ecological survey of every possible larval habitat, including all forest, farm and peri-domestic sites.
  • Time and season: Collections spanned several years and were partly interrupted by the pandemic. Seasonal abundance and year-to-year variation may affect the observed proportions.
  • Species-level complexity: Meghalaya’s large number of recorded Anopheles species makes molecular identification important when decisions depend on distinguishing closely related mosquitoes.

What should surveillance and control programs do next?

  • Continue sampling both forested areas and rice-growing landscapes, including larval habitats near villages.
  • Use molecular methods alongside field morphology to verify species identities.
  • Test representative mosquitoes for malaria parasites before assigning a transmission role to an abundant species.
  • Track how LLIN coverage, insecticide resistance, land clearing and rice cultivation change local species composition.
  • Combine household protection with locally appropriate environmental and larval management rather than assuming one habitat or one vector explains all transmission.

Walton also emphasized that malaria control should consider how land is used for food production while protecting health and biodiversity. That approach is especially relevant when agricultural expansion and vector ecology are changing at the same time.
