Necomimi is a real, motorized cat-ear headband that uses sensors on the wearer’s forehead and ear to measure brain activity and move the ears. Its software estimates broad concentration and relaxation signals; it does not decode thoughts or reliably identify emotions such as happiness or sadness.
What Necomimi is—and what it is for
Necomimi is a wearable novelty device developed by Japanese design company Neurowear, with consumer EEG technology from NeuroSky. Rather than serving as a medical monitor, it turns broad, algorithmically inferred states into a visible, playful gesture. Neurowear presents it as a form of nonverbal expression suited to settings such as cosplay, parties and conventions. Neurowear’s product page and NeuroSky’s account of the concept describe its origins and intended character.
How the EEG sensing and ear movement work
Sensors contact the skin around the forehead and ear and pick up electrical signals associated with brain activity. The device processes those signals to produce attention- or concentration-related and relaxation-related values, then uses motors to move the ears when its software’s internal thresholds are crossed. The newer product listing describes scores from 0 to 100 calculated about once per second; the full algorithm and thresholds are not published. The product listing and NeuroSky’s explanation of the movements outline this behavior.
That distinction matters: EEG is the measurement of electrical activity at the scalp; the device’s scores are features derived from that signal; and labels such as concentration or relaxation are software interpretations. The ears display those interpretations, not a direct transcript of thoughts or a validated reading of a person’s emotional state.

What the ear movements are intended to indicate
| Movement | Advertised interpretation | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Ears stand or perk up | Increased concentration or attention | A change in the device’s concentration-related estimate, not proof of a particular thought. |
| Ears droop | Relaxation | A broad software category, not a specific emotion. |
| Ears perk and wiggle | High concentration and relaxation together, marketed as “zone” | Neurowear compares this to peak performance in athletes; it is the company’s description of the device’s output, not a universal physiological diagnosis. Neurowear |
| Small twitches | Changing brainwave input | Movement may reflect changing input rather than a meaningful social signal. |
| One ear up and one down on older models | Possible loss of sensor contact | Check sensor placement before interpreting it as a state. The older-model teardown and manual notes this possible contact problem. |
Does it detect your state of mind?
Only in a narrow consumer-gadget sense. Necomimi responds to EEG-derived measurements that its software associates with attention and relaxation. It does not identify a specific thought, memory, intention, or command, and the product documentation does not establish that it can tell whether someone is happy, sad, anxious, attracted to someone, or being truthful. “Mood-reading” is therefore too strong: the most accurate description is that the ears visualize broad, proprietary signal categories.
The same caution applies to “zone.” Neurowear describes the behavior as simultaneous concentration and relaxation and relates it to athletes’ peak-performance state. The product’s output is determined by its own categories and thresholds; it does not verify that the wearer has entered a universally defined mental state.

Getting a steadier reading
- Charge the newer rechargeable model before use.
- Place the forehead sensor against skin and position the ear sensor or clip correctly.
- Move hair, hats and accessories away from sensor contact points.
- Remain relatively still while the device settles; movement can disturb contact or input.
- If readings seem erratic, check sensor contact, skin dryness and battery level before assuming the device is broken. The current product FAQ says dry skin can make detection difficult and recommends lightly moistening the forehead or earlobe. Product FAQ
Do not treat every twitch or change in position as a reliable report of what the wearer feels. The output can change with sensor contact, movement and brain-signal input, and the system’s categories are broad.

The ears move unpredictably
Check that the sensors touch skin, hair or clothing is not in the way, the wearer was still while the device settled, and the battery is charged. Dry skin and electrical interference can also affect sensor input. The older teardown and manual discuss contact-related behavior; the current listing addresses dry skin.

One ear behaves differently from the other
On older models, asymmetrical ears can indicate that a sensor has lost contact. Reposition the sensor first; do not infer a special mental state from the asymmetry.
You cannot make the ears move on command
Neurowear says users may become accustomed to influencing the output, but that is not precise voluntary control. Attention, relaxation, fatigue, movement and sensor quality can all affect the result.

The movement does not match how you feel
The device does not measure named emotions directly. A mismatch between its broad signal category and the wearer’s own description is not, by itself, evidence of a fault.
Alternatives if you want a different kind of control
No directly equivalent, currently available EEG-controlled cat-ear competitor is established by the cited product information. Other approaches serve different purposes:
- Ordinary motorized cosplay ears: can provide predictable movement without EEG input.
- Gesture- or voice-controlled ears: offer more direct commands, but do not respond to brainwave signals.
- DIY EEG projects: allow experimentation but require a separate EEG headset, electronics, motors, programming and calibration.
- General consumer EEG headsets: may support other experiments, but compatibility with Necomimi’s hardware and proprietary control logic should not be assumed.
Nothing in the cited product documentation establishes Necomimi as a medical device, diagnostic tool, treatment, or validated monitor for ADHD, anxiety, depression, autism, stress disorders, cognitive impairment or neurological disease. It is not a substitute for clinical EEG, professional assessment, sleep studies or validated physiological monitoring.
