New Injection Shows Early Promise for Flat-Faced Dogs’ Breathing

An RMIT-reported pilot found visible improvement in six bulldogs given investigational Snoretox-1, but larger studies and regulatory approvals are still needed.

An experimental injection called Snoretox-1 showed early promise in a small pilot involving six bulldogs with severe brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). RMIT University reported on 23 April 2026 that all six dogs visibly improved and completed a brisk three-minute walk that had previously been difficult. The result is preliminary: Snoretox-1 is not established as an approved or widely available treatment, and larger studies and regulatory approvals are still needed.

What is Snoretox-1?

Snoretox-1 is an investigational injection developed by Melbourne biotechnology company Snoretox with RMIT collaboration. RMIT describes it as a modified tetanus toxin combined with a targeting component. The treatment is intended to increase muscle tone at the front and floor of the mouth, helping support the throat and keep the airway more open during breathing.

That proposed action targets muscle support around the airway; it does not correct the underlying short-skull shape associated with flat-faced breeds. RMIT says the technology has been in development for more than 15 years.

What happened in the bulldog pilot?

The early-stage pilot involved six bulldogs with severe BOAS symptoms. According to RMIT’s report on 23 April 2026, all six showed visible improvement, made a brisk three-minute walk that had previously been difficult, and had noticeably less noisy and effortful breathing.

PRCMISEMED Pet Oxygen Mask Set - Veterinary Designed Breathing Aid for Dogs/Cats/Birds/Animals - 5 Sizes - Easy to Clean & Connect to Oxygen Source - Ensures Comfort & More Oxygen Delivery
  • 【Veterinary-Grade Respiratory Support】Soft-seal dome minimizes oxygen loss and provides stable delivery, ideal for respiratory distress, chronic airway disease and emergency stabilization in animals of various sizes.
  • 【Engineered Oxygen Flow Efficiency】Specialized vent design enhances oxygen concentration while directing exhaled CO₂ outward, maintaining cleaner airflow and supporting consistent therapy sessions.
  • 【Comfortable Fit for Reduced Stress】Flexible silicone interface adapts to different face shapes, reducing anxiety and improving tolerance during oxygen therapy for dogs, cats and other small pets.
  • 【Complete Multi-Size Mask Kit】Includes five mask sizes and a 7-ft oxygen tube compatible with most concentrators and portable tanks, supporting flexible use across different treatment rooms and field units.
  • 【Reliable for High-Volume Care Settings】Well-suited for clinics, EMS teams, shelters, wildlife groups and rescue units relying on durable, easy-clean oxygen masks for frequent and varied patient needs.

These observations are encouraging, but six dogs are too few to establish how reliably the injection works across the wider population of affected dogs. The accessible report does not give detailed numerical respiratory measurements, the duration of follow-up, or a detailed account of adverse events. The pilot therefore cannot establish how long any improvement lasts or fully characterize safety.

Could the injection help French bulldogs?

French bulldogs are among the flat-faced breeds affected by BOAS, but the RMIT account describes the six pilot participants as bulldogs without specifying their breeds. It does not establish a separate result for French bulldogs, or show that every dog with BOAS would respond the same way. A veterinarian familiar with BOAS can assess an individual dog’s breathing and discuss care appropriate to its symptoms.

PROMEVET Veterinary Anesthesia Mask Set - 6 Sizes for Dogs/Cats/Birds/Pets - Anesthetic Accessory, Fits Standard Anesthesia Machines - Easy to Clean & Storage Box Included (Animal Use Only)
  • 【Stable Fit for Reliable Anesthetic Delivery】Six graduated mask sizes help achieve a consistent seal for pets from small mammals to medium-sized dogs, reducing gas loss and supporting efficient induction.
  • 【Ready for Standard Veterinary Systems】Universal connector attaches to most anesthesia machines without adapters, allowing rapid transitions between procedures such as exams, imaging, dental cleanings and soft-tissue work.
  • 【Designed for Animal Comfort】Light, clear dome and flexible silicone perimeter limit pressure and reduce patient resistance, promoting smoother inductions even with anxious animals.
  • 【Durable Build for Repeated Use】Tough medical-grade construction withstands routine handling, while the detachable design simplifies deep cleaning, disinfection and long-term maintenance.
  • 【Supports Busy Clinical Environments】A practical solution for surgery centers, teaching facilities, multi-room clinics and high-volume hospitals managing diverse species every day.

RMIT quotes Snoretox managing director and RMIT adjunct professor Tony Sasse as saying the company estimates that almost half of pugs, French bulldogs and British bulldogs are affected by BOAS. That is a company-attributed estimate in the university report, not an independently verified prevalence figure presented there.

How does Snoretox-1 compare with BOAS surgery?

RMIT identifies surgery to widen the nostrils or remove excess tissue in the throat, along with weight management, as current treatment options. Outcomes vary. Snoretox presents its injection as a possible addition to surgery or an alternative, including for dogs that have not responded well to an operation. That is a proposed role, not evidence that injections are better than surgery.

Consideration Snoretox-1 Surgery
Evidence described by RMIT Early pilot in six bulldogs; all reportedly showed visible improvement on a short walking test. Identified as a current treatment option; the report does not provide comparative trial results.
Purpose Intended to strengthen airway-supporting muscles; it does not reshape the skull. May widen the nostrils or remove excess throat tissue.
Procedure burden and anesthesia Not stated in the report. Not detailed in the report.
Durability, eligibility, cost and adverse effects Not established in the report. Not quantified in the report; outcomes vary.
Regulatory status and availability Further research and regulatory approvals are required before wider offering. Identified by RMIT as a current treatment option.

Because the report does not provide matched data on durability, risks, eligibility, or outcomes, it cannot support a numerical comparison between the injection and surgery. Decisions about an individual dog’s treatment belong with a veterinarian, who can assess the dog’s airway and overall health.

Is the injection approved, and can owners join a trial?

RMIT says further research and regulatory approvals are needed before Snoretox-1 can be offered more widely. The reported pilot does not establish that the injection is approved or commercially available. RMIT says a larger trial is planned and invites owners of symptomatic bulldogs to volunteer for a future study, but the report does not give enrollment dates, eligibility criteria, or contact details. Owners interested in participating should ask their veterinarian about the study and check for an official announcement from RMIT or Snoretox.
