Snapchat really did introduce cat-friendly augmented-reality effects in October 2018. The effects could decorate a cat with reported additions such as flower crowns, glasses, unicorn horns, devil wings, and animal ears. Snapchat calls this type of interactive effect a Lens, not a traditional Filter—and the exact 2018 cat Lens may no longer be available.
If you want to try a cat effect now, search Snapchat’s Lens Explorer rather than assuming it is still sitting in the Lens carousel.
What was Snapchat’s cat Lens?
The feature announced in October 2018 expanded Snapchat’s animal-recognition effects to cats. Earlier pet effects were commonly associated with dogs, so the cat-focused launch was notable for owners who wanted to create playful photos and videos of their pets. Contemporary coverage reported effects including flower crowns, glasses, unicorn horns, devil wings, and other ears or facial accessories. The original 2018 report described the launch, but it did not establish that every cat, breed, camera, or device would work reliably.
The effect was designed to track the cat while the camera was active. That makes it an augmented-reality Lens rather than a simple color or image overlay.

Lens versus Filter: what is the difference?
Snapchat uses the terms differently:
- Lens: An interactive augmented-reality effect that can track a face, animal, body, or the surrounding environment in real time.
- Filter: A post-capture overlay or visual treatment applied to a Snap.
Because the cat effect followed the animal during filming, cat Lens is the technically accurate description. The word “filter” remains understandable because it was used in the original headline and is what many people search for.

How to find a cat Lens today
- Open Snapchat and go to the Camera screen.
- Swipe through the available Lenses to activate the Lens carousel.
- Tap the magnifying-glass icon to open Lens Explorer.
- Search for terms such as
cat,kitten,pet, oranimal. - Tap a Lens tile to try it.
- Tap the camera button for a photo, or press and hold it for a video.
Snapchat launched Lens Explorer to help people discover community-created Lenses. Its current help guidance explains that users can search for Lenses, favorite them, subscribe to creators, and temporarily add effects to the carousel. Can you unlock one from a friend’s Snap?
Yes, sometimes. If a friend posts a Snap using a Lens, swipe up on that Snap to open its Context Card. If the Lens is still available and the Snap includes the relevant card, Snapchat may give you an option to try or unlock it. Not every Snap has a Context Card, and an old Snap does not guarantee that its Lens remains active.

Using a Snapcode or Lens link
A Lens can also be shared through a Snapcode or a Lens link. To scan a Snapcode, point Snapchat’s camera at the code and press and hold on it. A shared deep link may open the Lens directly in Snapchat. These methods are useful when someone has recently posted a working cat Lens, but an old code or link may stop working if the Lens is removed or changed. Snapchat’s materials also document Snapcode-based Lens unlocking in its October 2022 investor newsletter.
Why the cat Lens may be missing
Do not treat the 2018 announcement as proof that the same effect is still offered. Snapchat says its available Lenses are continually updated, and some can disappear or become unavailable. The carousel is not a permanent archive.
If you cannot find a cat effect, try this checklist:
- Update Snapchat through your device’s official app store.
- Close and reopen Snapchat, then return to the Camera screen.
- Search Lens Explorer manually instead of relying on the carousel.
- Try broader searches such as
petoranimal. - Look for a recent Snapcode or Lens link rather than an old repost.
- Consider that the effect may have been temporary, sponsored, regional, or retired.

Why tracking may fail on your cat
A pet Lens is a camera-tracking novelty, not a dependable animal-recognition system. It may work on one cat and fail on another, or track only intermittently. Results can vary with:
- Distance from the camera
- A side-facing or partially hidden face
- Dim or uneven lighting
- Fast movement
- Multiple animals in the frame
- Front-facing versus rear cameras
- Phone and Lens compatibility
- Whether the effect is actually designed for cats rather than human faces
If the Lens tracks you but not the cat, switch between the front and rear cameras, move closer while keeping the cat’s whole head visible, improve the lighting, and try a Lens specifically labeled for pets or animals. Keep your cat calm with a familiar toy or gentle voice. Do not assume the original 2018 Lens is malfunctioning; it may simply have been retired.
Snapchat also notes that some Lenses may not be available on every device, so compatibility can vary even when an effect appears in search.
Take the photo without stressing your cat
- Use soft natural light where possible.
- Let the cat stay in a familiar spot rather than forcing a pose.
- Keep the session brief and stop after a few unsuccessful attempts.
- Avoid bright flashes close to the cat’s eyes.
- Never hold a cat down solely to capture a funny image.
- Stop immediately if the cat shows fear or agitation, such as flattened ears, hissing, repeated attempts to escape, or other stress signals.
The Lens is optional and purely visual. A missed photo is preferable to making a cat uncomfortable.

What if Snapchat no longer has the effect?
First, search Lens Explorer for newer community-created cat and pet effects. If you need to edit an existing photo rather than apply an effect live, a general photo-editing app may be more suitable. That approach gives you more control, but it will not provide Snapchat’s real-time tracking.
A particular alternative app should not be treated as automatically equivalent: features, device support, availability, and pricing change. The practical choice is Snapchat for live AR and immediate sharing, or another editor for effects applied after the photo has already been taken.
The bottom line
The headline was based on a real October 2018 Snapchat launch, but “Lens” is the accurate term. In 2026, the best way to find a cat effect is to open Lens Explorer and search for current cat or pet Lenses. Expect tracking to be imperfect, and let your cat—not the camera—decide when the photo session is over.

Why does Snapchat track me but not my cat?
The Lens may be intended for human faces, or the cat may be too far away, moving, poorly lit, turned sideways, or partially hidden. Try a pet-specific Lens, better lighting, and a closer but comfortable distance.
Can Snapchat Lenses work on other animals?
Do not assume they will. Some Lenses are designed for specific subjects, and reliable support for dogs, rabbits, turtles, or other animals is not established by the 2018 cat announcement.
