It was missing from scientific records by the early 2000s and feared lost from the wild, but wildlife biologists found eight survivors—four males and four females—in village ponds in Bangladesh’s Noakhali and Barishal districts in 2008.
Those eight turtles became the founders of a conservation programme that now includes managed breeding at Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre, releases into the Sundarbans and satellite tracking. The progress is remarkable, but it is a managed comeback, not proof that the species has recovered in the wild.
Is the northern river terrapin extinct?
The species remains alive, but it is still critically endangered. The northern river terrapin is a freshwater and brackish-water turtle associated with Bangladesh’s Sundarbans. By the early 2000s, it had disappeared from scientific records and was feared extinct in the wild.
That changed in 2008, when biologists located eight animals in village ponds in Noakhali and Barishal: four males and four females. There is still no verified current census showing how many terrapins survive independently in the wild, and no published post-release survival rate establishes that released turtles have formed a self-sustaining population.

How eight survivors launched the recovery
Rescue from village ponds in 2008
The eight terrapins were a genetically and demographically important remnant: enough males and females to make a managed breeding effort possible. The Bangladesh Forest Department brought them to Bhawal National Park in Gazipur, where staff began captive breeding.
Moving the programme closer to the species’ habitat
In 2014, the adults and their offspring were transferred to Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre in the Sundarbans. Karamjal offered riverine and mangrove conditions more closely aligned with the terrapin’s natural environment than the original facility.

A partnership rather than a single intervention
The programme has involved the Bangladesh Forest Department, Prokriti O Jibon Foundation and Vienna Zoo, with support in earlier phases from the Turtle Survival Alliance. Their work combines breeding, husbandry, release and field monitoring rather than treating the discovery of the eight founders as a complete solution.
What happens to a terrapin before release?
- Egg collection and incubation: Eggs are buried in sand or placed in controlled incubation areas, with staff monitoring incubation conditions, including temperature.
- Early rearing: Hatchlings are raised in water tanks, where their diets and growth can be observed and managed.
- Acclimatisation: Juveniles move into semi-wild enclosures before release, giving them a transition between intensive care and open ponds or creeks.
- Release and tracking: Selected males carry satellite transmitters so researchers can study movements and adaptation after release.
The centre also creates sandy nesting sites, an important intervention for a turtle whose reproduction depends on suitable banks and nesting substrates.

The recovery timeline and reported results

Why two 2025 totals should not be merged
Published accounts give different snapshots of the breeding centre. They may reflect different counting dates, categories or reporting methods, so they should be retained as separate attributed figures.

These figures demonstrate substantial managed production, but they are not a wild-population estimate. A hatchling in a breeding centre and a turtle surviving in a Sundarbans creek are different conservation outcomes.

Why the comeback matters beyond one turtle
The northern river terrapin depends on connected rivers, brackish channels, mangrove habitat and undisturbed sandy nesting banks. Returning animals to Sundarbans ponds and creeks therefore tests whether those places can support more than short-term releases.
A successful programme would preserve the species’ genetic stock, rebuild age classes and eventually produce turtles that reproduce and survive without continual human intervention. It also shows why reports of a species’ disappearance should be treated carefully: remnant animals can persist in overlooked places such as village ponds even after they vanish from formal records.

“This is a milestone in Bangladesh’s conservation history. It proves that with proper planning and scientific commitment, even a nearly extinct species can be brought back,” said Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, divisional forest officer of the East Sundarbans Division.
What still threatens the terrapin?
- Habitat loss: Development and the removal of natural nesting banks reduce places where adults can breed.
- Pollution and destructive fishing: Contaminated water and fishing practices can injure or kill turtles at different life stages.
- Poaching: Collection for meat or illegal trade remains a direct threat to a small population.
- Sand extraction: Removing sand can destroy nesting areas or leave them unsuitable for incubation.
- Rising seas and salinity intrusion: Changes in water level and salt concentration can alter riverine habitat and nesting conditions.
Captive numbers cannot compensate for those pressures indefinitely. The programme must protect habitat, limit illegal capture and fishing damage, and determine whether released turtles survive, move normally and reproduce.
Can a critically endangered turtle really recover?
Yes, but recovery has to be measured in stages. The terrapin’s current progress establishes several encouraging stages: a founder group was located, breeding has produced hundreds of hatchlings, juveniles have been reared for release, and some males are being tracked after release.
The decisive test is still ahead: a large enough wild population must survive, mature, nest and produce young across functioning Sundarbans habitat. Until a verified wild census and post-release survival data show that pattern, the most accurate description is a managed conservation comeback with continuing high extinction risk.
