The “revenge” is a metaphor. Tens of thousands of parrots have reportedly gathered in Hilario Ascasubi, Argentina, after habitat loss pushed them toward the town for food, shelter and water. Residents describe damaged power and communication cables, outages, deafening calls and droppings throughout the community—not a coordinated avian vendetta, but a severe human-wildlife conflict.
Why are parrots gathering in Hilario Ascasubi?
Biologist Daiana Lera told Reuters that “the hillsides are disappearing,” forcing the birds closer to cities to find basic resources. In other words, the parrots are responding to a shrinking habitat and concentrated food and water sources.
The influx reportedly began several years before Futurism described it on October 2, 2024. The birds migrate south to mountainous Patagonia during the summer breeding season, then use Hilario Ascasubi during fall and winter. That seasonal pattern helps explain why the town can be overwhelmed at particular times of year without proving a permanent population increase.
How many parrots are there?
Residents told Reuters there were about ten parrots for every human in a town of roughly 5,000 people. That would imply an extraordinary concentration, but it is a local estimate rather than a formal census. The precise number of birds in town has not been established by the cited reporting.

Are the parrots really attacking power lines?
They are damaging cables through normal parrot behavior, especially biting and chewing. Ramón Alvarez, a local journalist for Radio Taxi FM, told Reuters that the birds bite power and communication cables; rain can then enter the damaged wires and interrupt transmission. Outages also stop the station from broadcasting, creating a direct communication problem for residents.
The reported effects include:
- Chewed or otherwise damaged electricity and communications cables.
- Power and transmission interruptions when water enters damaged wiring.
- Persistent, intense screeching in a densely occupied town.
- Droppings on streets, buildings and other public areas.
- Recurring repair and cleanup costs for residents and utilities.
Calling this an “attack” makes a dramatic headline, but the evidence describes opportunistic feeding, perching and nesting behavior around infrastructure—not intentional sabotage.

Did deforestation drive the parrots into town?
Habitat loss is the central explanation offered by the reporting. The parrots are not described as choosing urban life for revenge; they are being squeezed toward human settlements as natural food, shelter and water disappear.
What happened in the Gran Chaco?
NASA Earth Observatory identifies the Gran Chaco as South America’s second-largest forest. It covers about 650,000 square kilometers (250,000 square miles) across Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil. From 1985 to 2013, about 142,000 square kilometers (55,000 square miles)—roughly 20 percent of the region—was converted to farmland or grazing land, according to NASA’s May 20, 2020 account.

NASA reported that soybean production was a direct driver of deforestation during the 2000s. Argentina’s 2007 forest law also faced uneven local enforcement, and some protected zones experienced increased deforestation after the law was enacted. Those findings provide regional context for habitat pressure, but they do not by themselves measure how many trees were lost in the specific areas used by Hilario Ascasubi’s parrots.
Why do the birds return despite deterrents?
Residents have tried loud noises and laser lights, yet the parrots kept coming back. The reports do not establish a reliably effective deterrent, and they do not prove that any single intervention will work permanently. A method that briefly moves a flock may fail when the town remains the safest nearby source of food, water or shelter.

What does this mean for people and parrots?
The conflict has immediate costs and a long-term ecological dimension. Residents face noise, sanitation problems, outages and infrastructure repairs. The parrots face the consequences of losing the habitat that historically supplied their resources, along with the hazards of living around wires, traffic and human activity.
Immediate nuisance and infrastructure exposure
Power and communication networks are especially vulnerable because cables provide conspicuous perches and accessible surfaces for birds that naturally use their bills to manipulate objects. Once insulation is compromised, weather can turn chewing damage into a wider outage. The Reuters account describes these as daily costs for the town, not a one-off incident.

Seasonal management
Because the birds’ town use is reported mainly for fall and winter, utilities and local officials can at least anticipate periods of heavier pressure. Seasonal inspections, rapid repair capacity and coordinated public-health cleanup may reduce disruption, although the cited reporting does not evaluate a specific management program.
Long-term habitat policy
Reducing future conflict requires addressing the conditions that push wildlife into settlements: protecting remaining forest, restoring degraded habitat, planning agricultural expansion and enforcing forest rules consistently. The Gran Chaco’s scale means this is a regional land-use issue, not something a single town can solve with noise makers.
Is this a permanent “parrot invasion”?
Not on the available evidence. The birds’ migration between Patagonia and Hilario Ascasubi indicates a seasonal movement, while the reports do not establish a permanent population trend. Continued habitat loss could increase future town use, but that outcome has not been quantified for this flock.
How should the headline be understood?
“Parrots orchestrate brutal revenge” is headline humor built around a striking reversal: people altered the birds’ habitat, and the displaced animals now disrupt human infrastructure. The literal story is simpler and more serious. Habitat degradation has concentrated a large, mobile parrot population in a town, producing predictable conflict over space, resources and vulnerable utilities.
