The Pekingese is a compact, sturdy Chinese toy companion with a long double coat, a confident independent personality, and modest exercise needs. Living well with one means committing to regular coat and facial care, gentle handling, weight control, and careful protection from heat, breathing strain, and eye injuries. The American Kennel Club (AKC) standard allows a maximum show weight of 14 pounds; that is a conformation limit, not a guarantee for every pet.
What are Pekingese like?
Pekes are typically self-possessed, affectionate with their chosen people, alert, and individualistic. The AKC standard describes their temperament as “directness, independence and individuality.” Many form a particularly strong bond with one person while remaining reserved or opinionated with others. An individual dog can differ substantially from these general tendencies.
Appearance
The breed has a compact, well-balanced body, a broad short-muzzled head, large dark eyes, a distinctive rolling gait, and a heavy front with lighter hindquarters. The coat is longest around the neck and shoulders, creating the familiar mane, and occurs in multiple colors. The 14-pound maximum in the U.S. standard describes the ideal conformation range rather than an average adult size or a health target.
Temperament and handling
- Use reward-based training and short, patient sessions. Forceful methods can provoke resistance from an independent dog.
- Supervise children and teach them to handle the dog gently; Pekes may tolerate children but are not suited to roughhousing.
- Introduce other pets calmly and protect the Peke from chasing, grabbing, or cornering.
- Expect alert barking or watchfulness, and reinforce quiet behavior without punishment.
Exercise and daily routine
Pekingese generally need modest activity rather than strenuous workouts. A leisurely walk or a brief game each day can provide movement and enrichment. Keep the pace comfortable for the individual dog and reduce activity in warm or humid weather. A short muzzle can make heavy panting and heat management more difficult, so stop at signs of fatigue or breathing effort.

How do you groom a Pekingese?
The thick double coat needs consistent, gentle maintenance. AKC guidance calls for at least one hour of brushing each week, while VCA’s breed profile advises brushing twice weekly to prevent mats. Use the frequency that keeps your dog’s coat tangle-free; dense or actively shedding coats may need more frequent sessions.
A practical grooming routine
- Brush in sections. Work through the coat gently, including behind the ears, under the legs, the chest, and the feathering around the tail.
- Loosen small tangles carefully. AKC notes that a slicker brush or metal comb can gently work out minor mats. A long-toothed comb is useful for long hair and tangled clumps, but choose tools for the actual coat and ask a veterinarian, breeder, or professional groomer for individualized advice.
- Clean and dry the nose wrinkle daily. Persistent redness, odor, pain, or discharge needs veterinary assessment rather than home treatment.
- Check the hair around the anus daily. Remove soiling safely and seek veterinary advice for persistent irritation, odor, or discharge.
- Brush teeth regularly. Routine dental care helps reduce periodontal problems; a veterinarian can recommend an appropriate toothbrush and toothpaste.
- Trim nails routinely. Long nails can affect comfort and movement. Have a groomer or veterinary team demonstrate if you are unsure.
Bathing and coat trimming should be based on cleanliness, skin condition, and the dog’s comfort. Never shave a double coat solely to solve heat concerns; prioritize shade, cooling, and veterinary advice for breathing or overheating problems.

Breathing, heat, and eye safety
Short-muzzle airway risk
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine lists Pekingese among breeds affected by brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). BOAS involves upper-airway abnormalities, but not every Pekingese has it, and noisy breathing alone cannot establish a diagnosis. Risk-management measures include keeping the dog at a healthy weight, minimizing panting, avoiding excessive heat and humidity, controlling activity, reducing stress, and using a harness rather than a neck collar.
Seek emergency veterinary care immediately for a dog in respiratory crisis, such as severe breathing difficulty, marked distress, blue or gray gums, weakness, or collapse.

Recognizing overheating
Short-muzzled dogs cool themselves less efficiently by panting. Early warning signs can include heavy panting, seeking shade, reluctance to play, and drooling. Ongoing excessive panting or drooling, breathing difficulty, vomiting, weakness, confusion, seizures, or collapse may indicate life-threatening heatstroke.
- Exercise during cooler parts of the day and provide shade and water.
- End activity at the first sign of heat stress; do not push a Peke to “finish” a walk.
- Never leave the dog in a parked car, even briefly.
- For serious signs, move the dog away from heat while arranging immediate veterinary care; do not delay to try unproven home remedies.
Protecting prominent eyes
The short muzzle provides less protection for the Pekingese’s prominent eyes. Choose a safe environment without protruding objects at face height, and prevent rough play that could cause an eye injury. Contact a veterinarian for persistent redness, squinting, pain, visible irritation, or discharge. Do not use unprescribed eye drops.

Feeding and weight management
Feed a complete, balanced diet appropriate to the dog’s life stage and keep fresh water available. Measure meals and account for treats; excess weight can worsen heat and breathing strain. Because a thick coat can hide body shape, feel beneath the coat when checking condition. The right calorie intake depends on age, body condition, activity, health, and the food’s energy density, so ask your veterinarian for an individualized plan.

- Can you maintain regular brushing and daily wrinkle and hygiene checks?
- Do you want an affectionate companion with an independent streak rather than a highly biddable dog?
- Can everyone in the household handle a small dog gently and supervise children?
- Can you limit strenuous activity and keep the dog cool in hot or humid weather?
- Will you seek prompt veterinary care for breathing, eye, or heat-warning signs?
A calm household that respects boundaries and can provide consistent grooming and health monitoring is often a better match than a busy home built around rough play or vigorous exercise.
Chinese origins and breed history
The Pekingese is an ancient Chinese imperial companion. The AKC’s historical account describes Pekingese reaching Britain after the 1860 looting of the imperial palace at Peking during the Second Opium War. Stories linking the breed’s origin to Buddha and a lion are cultural legends, not established biological history.
According to the AKC, the breed was first registered by the organization in 1906, and the Pekingese Club of America joined AKC in 1909.
When to call the veterinarian
- Breathing becomes difficult, unusually labored, or markedly worse with mild activity.
- Heat-related signs persist or include vomiting, weakness, confusion, seizures, or collapse.
- Eyes are red, painful, squinting, visibly irritated, or persistently discharging.
- The nose wrinkle or skin develops persistent redness, odor, pain, or discharge.
- Weight changes despite a consistent feeding routine, or you cannot assess body condition through the coat.
Breed guidance can identify risks to watch for, but only a veterinarian can assess an individual Pekingese and diagnose illness.
