A Persian onager foal named Jasper was reportedly born at Chester Zoo in England in 2024. The Daily Galaxy reported that he was born to a mare named Azita after a year-long pregnancy and was healthy, with his mother attentive to him. Those details come from secondary reporting: the Chester Zoo pages available here do not independently confirm Jasper’s birth, name, parentage or condition.
What animal was reportedly born at Chester Zoo?
The foal was reported to be a Persian onager, a type of Asiatic wild ass. The Daily Galaxy published its account on 13 October 2024, naming the foal Jasper and his mother Azita. Chester Zoo’s retrieved official material does not confirm those Jasper-specific details, so they should be understood as reported rather than independently verified.

What is a Persian onager?
Onagers are wild equids—members of the horse family—and are also known as Asiatic wild asses. Chester Zoo used that description in a 2015 report about two other onager foals born at the zoo. That report said those foals arrived after pregnancies lasting about a year; it does not independently establish the gestation or circumstances of Jasper’s reported birth.
How rare are onagers, and what is known about their numbers?
The 2024 Daily Galaxy article described Persian onagers as endangered and said fewer than 600 remained. The sources available for this account do not include a current primary population assessment to verify that figure or provide a current census.

Chester Zoo’s 2015 report gave an estimate of about 600 onagers in the wild. That is a historical estimate for onagers broadly, not a current count of Persian onagers specifically. It should not be used as today’s population figure.
Why does conservation breeding matter?
In its 2015 report, Chester Zoo said it was part of an international conservation scheme and breeding programme. The zoo’s curator of mammals, Tim Rowlands, said of the two foals in that report: “We hope the foals themselves will one day go on to contribute to the international breeding programme for the species, which is working to ensure there’s a sustainable population in zoos.” This statement concerned those 2015 foals; it does not establish Jasper’s role in a programme or the current status of the zoo’s participation.

Breeding a sustainable population in zoos and recovering animals in the wild are distinct conservation aims. The historical zoo report describes the former, but the sources here do not establish current outcomes for Persian onagers in the wild.

In its 2015 account, Chester Zoo cited illegal poaching, overgrazing and disease passed from farm animals as threats to onagers. These are the threats named in that historical report, not a complete or current assessment of pressures on the Persian onager.

Chester Zoo describes itself as a conservation charity and invites donations through its Conservation, Science and Education page. That page concerns the zoo’s broader conservation work; it does not establish a Jasper-specific appeal.
