Close, repeated contact with pigeons or material from their cages can be associated with hypersensitivity pneumonitis, sometimes called “bird fancier’s lung.” Reported patients have had persistent dry cough, breathlessness, chest tightness and, in some cases, lung scarring. But India does not have a population-level estimate showing how common pigeon-associated disease is, and the country’s sharp rise in Rock Pigeon numbers is not a measure of human illness.
What condition is linked to pigeon exposure?
Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an immune reaction to inhaled substances. In a Scroll interview, Dr Vivek Singh, director of pulmonology and lung transplant at Medanta, Gurugram, said: “Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is not an infection but the way the body reacts to certain allergens or chemicals that are present in pigeon droppings, which stimulates the immune response in the body and particularly impacts lungs.”
The reported symptoms include a persistent dry cough, breathlessness and chest tightness. The feature also describes lung scarring in affected patients. Symptoms alone cannot establish that pigeons are the cause; a clinician has to assess the complete history and other possible explanations.

Clinicians quoted in the report ask about contact with pigeons, droppings and feathers in ordinary urban settings. The contexts described include:

These are reported exposure settings, not a ranked risk scale. The sources do not quantify how duration, distance, frequency or a particular location changes an individual’s risk. Questions about how long and how closely someone is exposed, whether droppings or feathers are involved, and whether dry material becomes airborne can help a clinician interpret symptoms.
India’s pigeon increase is a bird-population statistic, not a disease count
The official State of India’s Birds 2023 Rock Pigeon factsheet reports a rapid long-term increase in India. Its figures are trend estimates for the bird population, not a census of every pigeon and not a measure of respiratory disease.

What doctors may investigate when symptoms persist
Scroll reports that a pulmonologist asks patients with persistent dry cough or breathlessness about occupational and bird exposure. The account mentions lung-function tests, imaging and blood tests as part of a medical investigation. Those details describe the reported clinical approach, not a universal diagnostic protocol or a self-diagnosis checklist.

Tell a doctor about pigeons entering your home, feeding activity, bird keeping, work around cages and any cleaning of droppings or feathers. Dr Bobby Bhalotra, vice chairman of chest medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said: “In urban areas like Delhi, we have seen an increasing trend of such cases being associated with pigeons.” That is a clinician’s observation from urban practice, not national surveillance data.
Reducing exposure when pigeons occupy a space
After a reported history of exposure, Dr Singh said: “Once we do have the connection between a historical exposure to pigeons, we advise patients that pigeons should not be coming in their balconies.” Practical steps should focus on reducing contact and avoiding airborne dust, while recognising that the cited reporting does not validate a consumer cleaning protocol.

During unavoidable cleaning
- In a bird-hospital setting described by Scroll, staff wore masks and wet cage surfaces before removing dry droppings so the material was less likely to become airborne.
- One pigeon keeper reported wearing a mask or covering the nose during feather shedding.
- The report does not identify a mask standard or filtration rating, test these methods experimentally, or guarantee that they prevent disease. Do not treat a particular product as clinically proven protection.
If exposure is recurrent, reducing access to balconies, ledges and building shafts may be more useful than relying on a face covering alone. Ask a healthcare professional for advice suited to the person’s symptoms and exposure.

India’s expanding pigeon population and clinicians’ reports of cases in urban Delhi justify attention to exposure histories, but they do not prove that most people living near pigeons will develop lung disease.
