The twins are the zoo’s seventh and eighth jaguarundis, and the first born there with the naturally occurring golden-red “fox gene” color form. Their playful stalking and hunting practice look unmistakably wild, but there is no evidence that their mother transmitted a special personality trait.
What happened at Prague Zoo?
Female Blanche and male Chaco produced two kittens on July 7, 2025. Prague Zoo reported that both were thriving and had begun eating solid food. The family was placed in the South American Predators exhibit, above the North American river-otter enclosure.
These are the seventh and eighth jaguarundis born at Prague Zoo. The zoo has kept the species since 1993, with earlier successful births recorded in 2000, 2009 and 2013.
Why are the twins considered rare?
A distinctive golden-red coat
Jaguarundis naturally occur in several color forms, including grey-brown, black and golden-red. Prague Zoo said these were its first kittens showing the golden-red form known as the “fox gene.” The term describes a naturally occurring color variation, not evidence that the kittens are a different species.

Few European births
Breeding jaguarundis is uncommon in European zoos. Prague Zoo said the previous year’s litter from Blanche and Chaco was the only jaguarundi litter reported in Europe that year, adding context to the importance of this birth.
What is a jaguarundi?
A jaguarundi is a small South American wild cat closely related to the puma. Its long body and relatively flat head help it move through dense undergrowth. Unlike many cats, jaguarundis can be active during both daylight and nighttime and are capable hunters.

Did the kittens inherit their mother’s “wild spirit”?
That phrase works as playful headline language, not as a documented finding. Zoo keepers have observed the kittens playing, lurking, testing their parents’ patience, sleeping together and practicing hunting skills. Those actions are consistent with normal juvenile development in a predatory cat.
Nothing in the Prague Zoo account shows that Blanche passed on a special “wild spirit” or a particular personality. Behavior in young animals reflects development, instincts, learning and individual temperament; a playful kitten is not proof of an inherited personality trait.

Can visitors see the jaguarundi babies?
When Prague Zoo announced the birth, the kittens were open to visitors because they were healthy and accepting solid food. Brandl said there was “nothing to prevent visitors from seeing them.” Display schedules can change as animals grow, so check Prague Zoo’s current opening hours and South American Predators exhibit status before traveling.

A species can remain outside an endangered category while local populations face serious pressure, making managed breeding and habitat protection relevant to its future.
