The scarlet macaw (Ara macao) is a large parrot native to Central and South America. Although BirdLife International’s 2022 global assessment classifies it as Least Concern, the population trend is decreasing and local protections differ; captivity is a demanding, multi-decade commitment unsuitable for most people. Check the rules for the bird’s origin, location, and intended transaction before considering ownership.
What is a scarlet macaw?
The scarlet macaw is a large Neotropical parrot. Its native range spans Central and South America, and populations and subspecies do not necessarily share the same conservation or legal status. Mexico’s PROFEPA describes A. m. cyanoptera as characteristic of Mexico and Central America and A. m. macao as characteristic of South America.
Are scarlet macaws endangered?
BirdLife International’s IUCN assessment, last assessed on 19 August 2022, lists the scarlet macaw globally as Least Concern and reports a decreasing population trend. It estimates 50,000–499,999 mature individuals worldwide. That estimate is global, not a count for a particular country or population, and Least Concern does not mean every population is secure.
The assessment identifies habitat loss and capture for the pet trade as pressures contributing to declines in many parts of the range. It reports 9% tree-cover loss across the species’ range over three generations, citing Global Forest Watch (2021). This is a forest-cover statistic, not a direct estimate of macaw population decline. The assessment says the impact of trapping has not been quantified, so the number of birds taken should not be guessed.

How long do scarlet macaws live?
WWF reports an average lifespan of 40–50 years and says scarlet macaws may live for more than 80 years. These are guide estimates, not guarantees for an individual bird. Plan for a potential multi-decade commitment that may outlast changes in housing, finances, or the owner’s ability to provide care.
Do scarlet macaws make good pets?
WWF classifies scarlet macaw ownership as high risk and says they are unsuitable as pets for most people. Their care calls for substantial space, hours of daily stimulation and social interaction, sturdy rotating toys and puzzles, a considered diet, and access to an avian veterinarian; noise, destructive behavior, and boredom-related problems are also concerns.

WWF advises keeping scarlet macaws at least in pairs, or providing daily attention and interaction from a human companion. Before making plans, talk with a qualified avian veterinarian or reputable rescue about the needs of an individual bird. This general guide is not a substitute for individualized veterinary advice.
| Care consideration | What to plan for |
|---|---|
| Space and activity | Space to fly and substantial daily activity outside the cage. |
| Social contact and stimulation | Daily interaction and hours of stimulation, with attention to the bird’s social needs. |
| Enrichment | A rotating supply of sturdy toys and puzzles that provide chewing and foraging opportunities. |
| Diet and health | A considered diet and advice from a veterinarian who specializes in birds. |
| Long-term fit | Readiness for noise, possible destructive behavior, and a commitment that may last for decades. |
What enrichment do scarlet macaws need?
WWF recommends sturdy, rotating toys and puzzles. Large-parrot foraging toys and macaw enrichment toys may be useful categories to discuss with an avian veterinarian or rescue. Check dimensions, materials, construction, and intended bird size with qualified guidance; a generic product label is not proof that an item is suitable or safe for a particular bird.

How much does a scarlet macaw cost?
No reliable current purchase price or total ownership budget was established in this research. Costs depend on location and legal circumstances, and a purchase price alone omits the long-term commitment. Plan locally for appropriate housing, food, enrichment, routine and emergency avian veterinary care, and long-term contingencies; these are cost categories, not a sourced estimate.
Are scarlet macaws legal to own?
There is no single ownership rule that applies everywhere. The scarlet macaw is listed in CITES Appendix I, which controls international trade; the CITES Animals Committee document reports that it was first listed on 1 August 1985. CITES status is not a complete statement of domestic ownership law.

Before acquiring or moving a bird, ask the relevant wildlife authorities about the rules for the bird’s origin and destination, its subspecies or population where relevant, and the exact activity. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you help scarlet macaw conservation?
Support habitat conservation and reject demand for wild-caught or undocumented birds. The IUCN assessment identifies habitat loss and capture for the pet trade as pressures, though it does not quantify the impact of trapping. If considering a captive bird, verify its origin and applicable rules rather than treating availability for sale as proof of lawful sourcing.
