New York Dog Parade’s official event announcement said the 2025 celebration included hundreds of registered dogs, thousands of spectators, a costume competition, sponsor programming and adoptable rescue dogs as grand marshals. Registration opened on October 6 and filled quickly.
The parade marched along Avenue B. Reports from Gothamist and Our Town described different block ranges, while the official announcement confirmed Avenue B without specifying endpoints. Avenue B is therefore the safest description of the 2025 route.

- Harry Potter and the dementors. One dog appeared as Harry Potter while companions took on the eerie look of dementors from the wizarding world.
- The witch’s broom. A small dog became part of a witch-themed illusion built around a broom.
- The flower queen. A dog covered in flowers made the costume itself look like a wearable garden.
- Jinu from KPop Demon Hunters. The parade’s pop-culture lineup included a canine interpretation of Jinu from the animated musical fantasy.
- Courage the Cowardly Dog. A group costume brought the cartoon’s frightened pink hero and its surrounding characters into the parade.
- Labubu. A dog wore a look inspired by the popular big-eared collectible character.
- New York City food staples. Several participants turned familiar city foods into a group costume, fitting for a parade in the East Village.
- The Life of a Showgirl. Another costume took inspiration from the title and theatrical imagery of The Life of a Showgirl.
- Tater tots. The gallery included a playful food costume built around everyone’s favorite bite-size potatoes.
- Justin Wiener. A dachshund’s long shape supplied the punchline for a costume that riffed on Justin Bieber’s name.
- Matching fairies. Two dogs appeared in coordinated fairy costumes rather than competing for attention with mismatched outfits.
- Alien. A group drew on the science-fiction horror franchise for an otherworldly parade look.
- Bacon, eggs and a dog. A breakfast-themed trio paired a dog with costumes representing bacon and eggs.
- The farmer and the Great Dane. A Great Dane and its human companions used a farm theme that made the dog’s already imposing size part of the joke.
- Ramen. One dog was dressed as a bowl of ramen, a particularly fitting costume for a New York City food-themed gallery.
- The stuffed-animal disguise. In one of the more convincing visual gags, a dog was hidden among stuffed animals.
- Bastian as the Lorax. Bastian, winner of the 2025 World’s Cutest Rescue Dog Contest, attended in a costume inspired by the Lorax.
Not every dog pictured in the costume gallery was a contest finalist, and the published gallery is not a complete official scorecard. The descriptions above identify themes shown or reported in the 2025 gallery without assigning unverified dog names, breeds or placements.
Who won the 2025 parade?
Cereal Killers won the 2025 Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade. The official New York Dog Parade site lists the cereal-themed entry as the champion. A local account described the winning group as a cereal-inspired crime-scene presentation involving dogs and human participants; that colorful description comes from secondary reporting, not a published official judging transcript.
The return of a named champion mattered because the 2025 edition brought back the costume competition after the previous year’s parade intentionally went without judges, prizes or official placements.

Why the parade looked different in 2025
2023: a formal street parade saved from cancellation
The 2023 event nearly disappeared after permitting complications and the cost of staging a formal public parade threatened its future. Community pressure and support from Get Joy helped bring the event back as a street procession. It traveled along Avenue B and ended at a stage in Tompkins Square Park.
That year, the audience helped determine the top three entries through applause. A sound meter was used to compare the crowd’s reaction for the final rankings, according to Time Out New York. The 2023 winning lineup included Pookah the Pomeranian in a Winnie-the-Pooh-inspired costume, Penny Lane in a Willy Wonka costume and Mimi as a Pikachu balloon inspired by the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
2024: a processional-only edition
The 34th parade moved away from the park amid construction and organizational problems. It ran along Avenue A, approximately from East 13th Street to East 7th Street, and still attracted costumed dogs and spectators. But it had no official costume contest, judges, emcee, stage or prizes.
That distinction is easy to miss in photo coverage: a dog photographed in 2024 may look like a contest entrant even though there was no competition that year. Gothamist’s 2024 coverage described the edition as a procession rather than a judged contest.

2025: a new organizer and the competition’s return
For 2025, New York Dog Parade took responsibility for the event for the first time. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit was founded by canine writer Fern Watt. Its event plan combined the Avenue B procession with sponsor-supported programming, crowd-control planning, the restored costume competition and an adoption initiative.
Stella & Chewy’s served as principal sponsor. A festival or activation block was held on Sixth Street between Avenue B and Avenue C, while the parade itself remained associated with Tompkins Square Park and the surrounding East Village rather than being described as an event entirely inside the park.
A parade with a rescue-dog role
Adoptable dogs connected with Pup Starz, Social Tees and the ASPCA served as parade grand marshals. The official announcement described four adoptable dogs in that role. The ASPCA separately confirmed that Brunson, a resident of the ASPCA Adoption Center, participated as a grand marshal during Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.
The rescue initiative was one of the defining additions to the 2025 event, but it should not be confused with the general costume gallery: most dogs photographed at the parade were privately owned pets, and not every pictured dog was available for adoption.

The event also fits the longer history of the neighborhood’s dog community. The Tompkins Square Dog Run opened in 1990 as New York City’s first official dog run. The Halloween parade developed as a community event connected to the run and historically helped raise money for its maintenance. New York Dog Parade calls the celebration the largest Halloween dog parade in the world; that is the organizer’s description and should not be treated as an independently audited global ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will the parade happen again in 2026?
New York Dog Parade says 2026 will be the 36th Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade. However, as of August 10, 2026, the organizer had not publicly confirmed the date, start time, route, registration opening or participation rules. Its official parade page says the 2026 calendar is still coming soon.
That means readers should not assume the 2025 date, Avenue B route, October 6 registration opening or competition rules will carry over. Check the organizer’s parade calendar, official event page and social channels before making plans.
Should you bring your dog?
Watching the parade and entering it are different experiences. Spectators could attend the 2025 event for free, while dogs and owners who wanted to march or compete needed advance registration and a wristband. Because registration filled quickly, someone who wants to participate in a future edition should monitor the official announcement rather than wait until parade day.

For many dogs, the best choice may be to attend without them. A street parade can combine hundreds of dogs, thousands of people, cameras, strollers, costumes, loud cheering and very little room to retreat. A confident, well-socialized dog may enjoy that environment; a fearful, reactive, elderly or easily overwhelmed dog may not.
- Bring a dog only if: the dog is comfortable around unfamiliar people and dogs, can remain calm on leash and has already tolerated short practice outings in busy places.
- Attend as a spectator if: your dog becomes tense around crowds, guards personal space, reacts to other dogs or tries to escape when frightened.
- Skip the costume if: your dog dislikes clothing or shows discomfort. A dog does not need an elaborate outfit to be part of the celebration.
- Leave early if: your dog stops taking treats, begins pacing or panting, repeatedly licks its lips or yawns, tucks its tail, pins its ears, cowers or attempts to get away.
Dog costume safety checklist
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 2025 Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade returned as a full competition on Avenue B, with Cereal Killers taking the title and rescue dogs serving as grand marshals. The 36th edition is planned for 2026, but its date, route and registration details were not confirmed as of August 10, 2026. Until the official announcement arrives, use the 2025 photos for costume inspiration—not as a substitute for checking current event rules—and choose your dog’s comfort over a complicated outfit or a crowded parade.
