A Shepherd Collie Mix is an informal label, not an official dog breed. It most often refers to a German Shepherd Dog crossed with a Border Collie, sometimes called a Shollie, but the label can describe other shepherd and collie combinations. Because ancestry is not standardized, a dog’s likely size, coat, temperament, and health risks depend on its actual parentage.
A German Shepherd–Border Collie cross may be exceptionally intelligent, athletic, trainable, and devoted. Those same working-dog traits can also make a dog noisy, destructive, chase-oriented, or difficult to settle if its physical and mental needs are overlooked.
What is a Shepherd Collie Mix?
A Shepherd Collie Mix is a mixed-breed dog with shepherd-type and collie-type ancestry. It is not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as a standardized breed and has no official breed standard for size, appearance, behavior, or lifespan.
In many advertisements and adoption listings, the name refers specifically to a German Shepherd Dog crossed with a Border Collie. But “shepherd” and “collie” can refer to other breeds, including Australian, Belgian, or Dutch Shepherds and Rough or Smooth Collies. The AKC recognizes the Border Collie and Collie as separate breeds.

That distinction matters. A Rough Collie, for example, is different from a Border Collie and is generally taller and heavier. A shelter’s visual breed identification can be a useful description, but it does not prove ancestry. Documented parentage is more informative; a canine DNA test may provide additional ancestry clues, but it cannot predict exactly how a dog will look or behave.
Is it a hybrid or designer dog?
A planned German Shepherd–Border Collie cross may be marketed as a “designer dog,” but it is technically a crossbreed, not a true hybrid. In veterinary usage, a hybrid is generally the offspring of two different species. These dogs are all domestic dogs.
Crossing two breeds does not automatically produce a healthier or easier dog. A puppy can inherit useful traits from either parent, as well as health risks from both.
Expected size
There is no dependable official weight chart for this mix. The AKC lists German Shepherd Dogs at approximately 50–90 pounds and Border Collies at approximately 30–55 pounds. A cross can vary widely depending on its parents, sex, skeletal structure, and inherited genes.

If “Collie” means a Rough or Smooth Collie rather than a Border Collie, the expected build may differ. For an individual puppy, the adult size of both parents, the puppy’s growth pattern and body condition, and a veterinary assessment are more useful than an online Shollie estimate.
| Possible parent | AKC-listed adult size | What it may mean for the mix |
|---|---|---|
| German Shepherd Dog | About 50–90 lb | May contribute a larger frame and strength |
| Border Collie | About 30–55 lb | May contribute a lighter athletic build and strong working drive |
| Collie (Rough or Smooth) | Males about 60–75 lb; females about 50–65 lb | Different from a Border Collie; may contribute a different size and coat |
Appearance and coat
A German Shepherd–Border Collie mix commonly has a medium or medium-long double coat, but coat length, density, feathering, ear carriage, markings, and body structure can vary. A Border Collie parent can have a rough, medium-length feathered coat or a shorter smooth coat; both are dense, weather-resistant double coats.
Possible colors include black, sable, tan, brown, white markings, and combinations inherited from either parent. Color alone cannot reliably identify a dog’s breed makeup.
Expect shedding, sometimes heavily, especially during seasonal coat changes. German Shepherd Dogs are heavy shedders, and brushing needs increase with coat length and density. The AKC recommends brushing Border Collies once or twice weekly, with daily brushing during shedding season.

Grooming routine
- Brush according to coat density; many coats need brushing once or twice a week, with more frequent brushing during shedding season.
- Check behind the ears, around the hind legs, and under the tail for mats or trapped debris.
- Trim nails regularly and inspect the ears; do not clean them routinely without a reason.
- Brush teeth with dog-safe toothpaste and arrange veterinary dental care when needed.
- Inspect the coat after hikes or time in brush for ticks, grass awns, and tangles.
Do not routinely shave a double-coated dog. The coat provides insulation and may grow back unevenly or poorly after shaving.
Temperament
German Shepherd Dogs and Border Collies were both developed for demanding work. A mix may be alert, responsive, athletic, highly focused on its handler, and quick to learn. It may also be reserved with unfamiliar people or motivated to control moving animals and people.
These are possibilities, not guarantees. Genetics, early socialization, training, health, environment, and previous experience all affect behavior. Intelligence does not necessarily make a dog easy to live with: a clever dog can learn desirable behaviors quickly, but it can also become very efficient at barking at the window, opening gates, stealing objects, or chasing movement.
“Protective” is not the same as dependable guard-dog behavior. It may mean alert barking, stranger wariness, territorial behavior, or reactivity. Intimidation and unsupervised protection training can make problems worse.
Exercise and mental stimulation
This mix is often a poor choice for a household looking for a dog content with a brief daily walk. A German Shepherd–Border Collie cross that inherits strong working drive may need regular physical activity, training, sniffing, and problem-solving every day.
Useful activities include:
- Long walks and hikes; runs only after the dog is physically mature
- Fetch, tug, swimming, and other controlled games
- Obedience, trick training, rally, or agility
- Scent work, tracking, and food puzzles
- Herding activities with qualified supervision where appropriate
- Mat training and relaxation exercises
There is no scientifically established exercise duration that is right for every Shepherd Collie Mix. A puppy, adult athlete, senior, and dog with joint disease should not follow the same plan. Avoid strenuous repetitive exercise and forced running while a puppy is still growing; ask your veterinarian when higher-impact activities are appropriate.
More exercise is not always the answer. A dog can become fitter without becoming calmer if every day consists only of high-arousal ball throwing. Combine activity with sniffing, learning, and deliberate practice at settling.
Training and socialization
Use reward-based training from the beginning and continue throughout the dog’s life. Both parent breeds are trainable, but harsh corrections can increase fear, conflict, or defensive behavior.

Training priorities
- Teach name recognition and attention before adding distractions.
- Build a recall with high-value rewards; do not test it off-leash in unsafe areas.
- Practice loose-leash walking and calm behavior at doors.
- Teach “leave it,” “drop it,” and a reliable trade for stolen objects.
- Train cooperative handling for brushing, nail care, ear checks, and veterinary exams.
- Teach a mat settle so the dog can relax when nothing exciting is happening.
- Practice safe behavior around bicycles, joggers, vehicles, livestock, wildlife, and running children.
Socialization means controlled, positive exposure—not forcing a worried puppy to endure crowded places or unfamiliar handling. Introduce people, dogs, surfaces, sounds, transport, and veterinary experiences at a level the puppy can manage. If the dog is lunging, hiding, snapping, or unable to take food, the situation is too difficult and should be adjusted.
Living with children and other pets
A Shepherd Collie Mix may live well with children, cats, or other dogs, but the label cannot establish compatibility. Evaluate the individual dog and manage the household actively.
Herding behavior may involve staring, stalking, circling, blocking, chasing, or nipping. A large, athletic dog can knock over a child even without aggressive intent. Do not allow the dog to practice chasing children, cats, bikes, joggers, or livestock; repeated chasing can become rewarding and harder to interrupt.
- Supervise children and dogs rather than relying on either to “know better.”
- Give the dog a quiet resting area that children cannot enter.
- Use gates, leashes, crates, or separate rooms when supervision is not possible.
- Never leave a dog and young child alone together.
- Introduce cats and small animals gradually, with barriers and a reliable way to prevent chasing.
Health concerns
Mixed breeding does not eliminate inherited disease. A Shepherd Collie Mix can be affected by conditions associated with either side of its ancestry.
Hip and elbow dysplasia
Hip dysplasia involves abnormal development and looseness of the hip joint, which can lead to osteoarthritis. Elbow disease can also cause pain and lameness. Risk is influenced by genetics, growth, nutrition, body weight, and other factors.
Contact a veterinarian for limping, stiffness, difficulty rising, reluctance to climb stairs or jump, reduced activity, or a bunny-hopping gait. These signs do not diagnose dysplasia, but they should not be dismissed as normal growing pains.
Degenerative myelopathy
Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive neurological disease associated with a risk variant found in German Shepherd Dogs and several other breeds. A DNA result indicates genetic risk; it does not prove that a dog will develop the disease.
Eye disease
Border Collies can be affected by inherited eye problems, including collie eye anomaly and other conditions. An ophthalmologist evaluation is among the recommended health tests for Border Collies and is especially relevant when a breeder is producing a Border Collie cross.

MDR1 medication sensitivity
MDR1, also called ABCB1-related multidrug sensitivity, is relevant when Border Collie, Collie, German Shepherd, or related mixed ancestry is possible. Dogs with one or two copies of the variant may react adversely to certain medications, including some doses of ivermectin, loperamide, and acepromazine. UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory reports that dogs with two copies are likely to have severe sensitivity, while dogs with one copy may show milder sensitivity.
Tell the veterinarian about the dog’s possible collie or shepherd ancestry before medication is prescribed. Do not give human medicines, leftover prescriptions, or anti-diarrhea products without veterinary direction.
Bloat
If the dog is large and deep-chested, discuss gastric dilatation-volvulus, commonly called bloat, with your veterinarian. Sudden abdominal enlargement, repeated unproductive retching, restlessness, weakness, pale gums, or collapse are emergency signs requiring immediate veterinary care.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Health checks when buying from a breeder
Ask for records that can be independently verified rather than accepting “vet checked” or “hybrid vigor” as proof of health. For a German Shepherd parent, look for:
- OFA hip evaluation
- OFA elbow evaluation
- Cardiac evaluation
- Thyroid evaluation
- Degenerative myelopathy DNA result
- Temperament information or testing where available
For a Border Collie parent, request:
- OFA hip evaluation
- Ophthalmologist evaluation
- Relevant DNA test results for the parent’s lines and known breed risks
Testing lowers risk but cannot guarantee a disease-free puppy. Meet the parents when possible and observe whether they are physically healthy, behaviorally stable, and comfortable being handled. A breeder who will not show health documentation deserves additional scrutiny.
Nutrition and puppy growth
Feed a complete and balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage. A puppy expected to become medium-large or large should grow steadily, not be deliberately overfed. Excess body weight increases stress on developing joints.
Use body condition, growth pattern, and veterinary examinations—not only the feeding chart on the food bag—to adjust portions. Count treats as part of the daily calorie intake. Your veterinarian can help select an appropriate puppy diet and determine when to transition to adult food.
Lifespan
There is no reliable official lifespan for this mixed-breed label. Adult size, inherited disease, nutrition, body condition, preventive care, and individual variation all matter. The AKC lists Border Collies at 12–15 years, but that figure is context, not a guaranteed prediction for a German Shepherd cross.

How to decide whether this mix fits your home
- Confirm the label. Find out whether the dog is actually a German Shepherd–Border Collie cross or involves other breeds.
- Assess the individual. Look at recovery from surprises, handling tolerance, response to dogs and people, chase behavior, and ability to settle.
- Plan daily outlets. Make room for training, sniffing, exercise, grooming, and rest—not just a quick walk.
- Plan management. Secure fencing, gates, safe transport, visitor routines, and separation from small animals may be necessary.
- Review health information. Ask for parent testing from a breeder or obtain a veterinary examination after adoption.
- Get help early. A qualified reward-based trainer or veterinary behaviorist is preferable to waiting until chasing, reactivity, or separation problems become established.
The right Shepherd Collie Mix can be a rewarding partner for an active, organized household. It is less suitable for people who want a low-maintenance dog, cannot provide daily structure, or expect breed ancestry to guarantee a particular temperament.
FAQ
What is a Shepherd Collie Mix called?
A German Shepherd Dog–Border Collie cross is often called a Shollie. “Shepherd Collie Mix” is an informal label, though, and may describe other shepherd and collie combinations.
How big will a Shepherd Collie Mix get?
There is no official size range. A German Shepherd–Border Collie cross may vary widely; the parents’ adult weights and the individual puppy’s growth are better guides than generic online charts.
Are Shepherd Collie Mixes good family dogs?
Some are, but no mixed-breed label guarantees safety or compatibility with children. Herding, chasing, guarding, and high arousal must be assessed and managed, and children should always be actively supervised around the dog.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow much exercise does a Shepherd Collie Mix need?
Many need substantial daily physical activity plus training, sniffing, and problem-solving. There is no universal duration; exercise should be adjusted for age, health, weather, body condition, and the dog’s ability to settle.
Do Shepherd Collie Mixes shed?
Usually, yes. A German Shepherd–Border Collie cross commonly has a double coat and may shed heavily, particularly during seasonal coat changes. Brush according to coat density and do not routinely shave the coat.
Are Shepherd Collie Mixes easy to train?
They are often quick learners, but that does not automatically make them easy pets. They can learn unwanted behaviors quickly, so early reward-based training, impulse control, recall, and relaxation work are important.
What health tests should a breeder provide?
For the German Shepherd parent, ask about hip and elbow evaluations, cardiac and thyroid checks, degenerative myelopathy testing, and temperament information. For the Border Collie parent, ask about hip, ophthalmologist, and relevant DNA testing. Verify the records where possible.
Can a Shepherd Collie Mix have MDR1 medication sensitivity?
Yes. MDR1 sensitivity is relevant to dogs with Border Collie, Collie, German Shepherd, and related mixed ancestry. Ask a veterinarian whether genetic testing is appropriate, and never give medication without veterinary instructions.
