A Shih Tzu is a small companion dog with a big need for human company, regular grooming, and sensible heat management. This breed can thrive in an apartment and usually does not need strenuous exercise, but it is not a low-maintenance dog: the coat, eyes, teeth, and short muzzle all require deliberate care.
Here is what to expect from a Shih Tzu’s size, personality, grooming routine, exercise needs, health risks, training, feeding, and suitability for different homes.

History and original purpose
The Shih Tzu was developed as a companion and house pet associated with Chinese imperial courts. Its name is commonly translated as “lion dog.” The breed’s exact origins are uncertain, but its history is linked to Tibetan and Chinese breeding stock, including dogs related to the Lhasa Apso and Pekingese.

Unlike a terrier, herding breed, or sporting dog, the Shih Tzu was not created for hunting, guarding, or long-distance work. Its job was to live closely with people. That background helps explain both its adaptability to small homes and its tendency to seek attention throughout the day. The American Kennel Club admitted the breed to its stud book in 1969.
Appearance and coat
A Shih Tzu is small but fairly sturdy, with a broad head, short muzzle, large eyes, and a tail carried over the back. The breed has a long, flowing double coat, and the accepted standard includes many colors and markings. Color alone does not establish that a dog is rare, superior, or healthier.
Shih Tzus are often described as low-shedding. That can mean less loose hair around the home, but it does not mean the breed is hypoallergenic. Allergens are also present in skin flakes, saliva, and other material, so people with allergies may still react to a Shih Tzu.
Many puppies undergo a noticeable coat change at around 10–12 months. The adult coat may become thicker, softer, or more likely to tangle than the puppy coat. A grooming routine that seemed adequate during puppyhood may need to become more thorough at this stage.
Shih Tzu temperament and behavior
A well-socialized Shih Tzu is typically affectionate, playful, outgoing, and comfortable living close to people. Many are friendly with children and other dogs, but no breed is automatically safe or patient in every situation. Young children should always be supervised around a dog, and the dog should have a quiet place where it can retreat.
This is a companion breed, not an independent outdoor dog. A Shih Tzu may struggle when left alone for long periods every day. Boredom and unmet social needs can show up as barking, attention-seeking, house-training setbacks, destructive behavior, or difficulty settling.
The breed’s friendly expression can make training challenges easy to underestimate. A Shih Tzu may understand a cue while still deciding whether complying is worthwhile. Begging, jumping, barking, or resisting grooming can become persistent if those behaviors sometimes earn food, attention, or an escape from handling.

Exercise and home life
Most healthy adult Shih Tzus need modest exercise rather than intense athletic work. Short daily walks, indoor games, and brief training sessions will often meet their needs. Apartment living can work well when the dog receives regular activity, attention, and opportunities to go outside for bathroom breaks.

Individual dogs may be more energetic, and puppies still need age-appropriate play and training. Exercise should be adjusted for the dog’s fitness, age, health, and weather rather than determined by a rigid schedule.
Heat and breathing precautions
The Shih Tzu’s short face and heavy coat make it poorly suited to hot, humid conditions and strenuous exercise in warm weather. Walk during cooler hours, reduce exertion, and use indoor activities when conditions are uncomfortable. Never assume that a short haircut eliminates heat sensitivity.
Heavy panting, breathing difficulty, weakness, collapse, or abnormal gum color requires immediate veterinary attention. Persistent noisy or effortful breathing should also be assessed rather than dismissed as a normal breed trait.
Water safety
Shih Tzus are poor swimmers. Supervise closely around pools, lakes, and boats, and use appropriate flotation equipment near open water. A dog that is playful or confident around water may still be unable to keep its head above the surface safely.

Grooming is often the biggest practical difference between owning a Shih Tzu and owning another small companion breed. A long coat requires daily work. Brushing only the visible top layer can leave tight mats against the skin, where they may hide irritation, parasites, moisture, or wounds.
If the coat is kept long
- Brush and comb daily, working through the coat to the skin.
- Give the mustache and topknot daily attention.
- Keep hair above the eyes trimmed short or secured in a topknot.
- Bathe regularly; approximately every three to four weeks is an AKC guideline.
- Trim the nails regularly.
- Clean and inspect the ears as advised by a groomer or veterinarian.
- Check the eyes, feet, and sanitary area for debris, tangles, or irritation.
A wire brush with flexible pins can help with the coat, but tools do not replace technique. Work gently in sections and avoid forcibly pulling through severe mats. A professional groomer or veterinarian should advise on mats that are tight against the skin.

The short “puppy trim”
A professional groomer can clip a Shih Tzu into a short puppy trim. This usually makes brushing and drying easier, but it does not make grooming optional. The dog still needs bathing, nail trimming, ear care, dental care, and maintenance around the eyes and face.
A short coat also does not remove the breed’s sensitivity to heat or its vulnerability to eye injuries. Coat length changes the workload; it does not change the dog’s anatomy.

Eye and facial care
Prominent eyes, a short muzzle, facial hair, and facial folds can allow hair or debris to irritate the cornea. Keep facial hair controlled and check the eyes routinely.
Contact a veterinarian promptly for squinting, redness, cloudiness, excessive tearing, discharge, rubbing, or a sudden change in the appearance of either eye. Eye problems can worsen quickly, and waiting to see whether an obvious irritation resolves can risk more serious injury.
Health considerations
Shih Tzus can be healthy, long-lived dogs, but their short facial structure, prominent eyes, small size, and heavy coat create specific concerns. Health problems reported or monitored in the breed include:
- Brachycephalic airway problems, including narrowed nostrils and excess soft-palate or throat tissue.
- Heat intolerance and overheating.
- Corneal injury, dry eye, cataracts, retinal disease, and other eye disorders.
- Patellar luxation, in which the kneecap moves out of its normal position.
- Hip dysplasia.
- Dental crowding and periodontal disease.
- Renal dysplasia, portal-systemic shunt, and cardiac problems in some lines.
Dental care
Small, short-faced dogs often have crowded teeth, making plaque control difficult. Daily brushing is the most effective home measure for reducing plaque. Use toothpaste made for dogs, never human toothpaste, and expect that veterinary dental examinations or professional cleanings may still be needed.

A few extra ounces can represent a significant proportion of a Shih Tzu’s body weight. Unmeasured food, table scraps, and frequent treats can cause weight gain even when the dog appears to eat small portions.

Feed a complete diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage, measure portions, and include treats in the daily calorie total. Ask a veterinarian to assess body condition rather than relying only on a target number on the scale.
Choosing a breeder and reviewing health information
Health-screening language can be confusing. The AKC Shih Tzu breed page currently lists “No recommended health tests” in its national-breed-club testing field. Separately, the American Shih Tzu Club health statement approved April 19, 2024, says the club does not require specific testing but encourages breeders to investigate lines for renal dysplasia, portal-systemic shunt, patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, inherited eye problems, and cardiac issues.
That statement says a Shih Tzu can obtain a CHIC number through an ACVO eye examination and a patellar-luxation evaluation registered with OFA. Hip and cardiac evaluations are described as optional testing in the same statement.
Ask a breeder for actual records for both parents rather than accepting “health tested” as a complete answer. Testing can reduce risk and provide useful information; it cannot guarantee that a puppy will never develop an inherited or environmental illness.
Training and socialization
Reward-based training suits the Shih Tzu’s social nature. Food rewards, praise, play, and calm handling generally produce better results than harsh corrections. Punitive methods can damage trust and make grooming, veterinary handling, or defensive behavior more difficult.
Start early with:
- Gentle handling of the paws, ears, face, tail, and mouth.
- Short, positive brushing and grooming sessions.
- Exposure to household sounds, people, friendly dogs, different surfaces, and veterinary-style handling.
- A consistent toilet-training routine.
- Response to its name, recall, “leave it,” and calm settling.
Puppy classes can help with socialization and basic skills when they use positive-reinforcement methods and follow appropriate vaccination and disease-control policies.

Is a Shih Tzu right for you?
| A Shih Tzu may suit you if you… | Think carefully if you… |
|---|---|
| Want a small indoor companion | Are away from home for long periods every day |
| Prefer modest exercise requirements | Want a dog for vigorous outdoor activity or hot-weather exercise |
| Enjoy a sociable, affectionate dog | Prefer a highly independent breed |
| Can provide daily interaction | Do not want regular coat and facial care |
| Can budget for grooming, dental care, and veterinary monitoring | Cannot plan for routine grooming and possible breed-related health needs |
The breed can be a very good choice for an apartment or smaller home, provided its social, grooming, and bathroom-break needs are met. It is a poor choice for someone seeking a hands-off dog that can spend most of the day alone or tolerate heat and strenuous exercise.
Common Shih Tzu claims that need correcting
- “Shih Tzus are hypoallergenic.”
- They may shed relatively little, but no dog breed is completely allergy-safe. A person with allergies can still react to a Shih Tzu.
- “Breathing noises are always normal for the breed.”
- Persistent or effortful breathing can indicate brachycephalic airway disease and deserves veterinary evaluation.
- “A puppy cut means no grooming.”
- Short hair reduces brushing and coat-maintenance time, but nail, ear, eye, bathing, and dental care remain necessary.
- “Every Shih Tzu is easygoing with children.”
- Many are affectionate, but temperament varies. Young children need supervision with any dog.
- “The AKC requires a fixed health-test package.”
- The current AKC breed page and the American Shih Tzu Club’s 2024 statement do not support that claim. The club does identify conditions breeders should investigate and tests used for CHIC qualification.
FAQ
Are Shih Tzus good apartment dogs?
Often, yes. They usually need only short walks, indoor play, and regular bathroom breaks, but they still need daily attention and should not be left alone for long periods every day.
How often does a Shih Tzu need grooming?
A long-coated Shih Tzu generally needs daily brushing and combing, regular bathing, and routine nail, ear, eye, and sanitary-area care. A short puppy trim reduces coat work but does not eliminate grooming.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Are Shih Tzus hypoallergenic?
No. Their coat may shed relatively little, but no dog is completely hypoallergenic. People can still react to skin flakes, saliva, and other allergens.
What health problems are common concerns in Shih Tzus?
Important concerns include brachycephalic airway problems, overheating, eye injuries and disease, dental disease, patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, and certain kidney, liver-vessel, and cardiac problems. Regular veterinary care is important.
The Bottom Line
Shih Tzus are affectionate, adaptable indoor companions with modest exercise needs, but their small size does not make them effortless pets. Plan for daily human interaction, consistent reward-based training, regular dental care, careful eye monitoring, and either daily long-coat grooming or frequent professional trims. Protect the dog from heat and strenuous exercise, and treat breathing or eye changes as veterinary issues rather than unavoidable breed quirks.
