A Shih Tzu Yorkie mix is a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Yorkshire Terrier, often informally called a Shorkie. It is not an AKC breed with a fixed standard, so its adult size, coat, temperament, shedding, and health cannot be reliably predicted from the mix label alone. Meet the individual dog, review available health records, and ask a veterinarian about its care.
The parent breeds offer context, not guarantees: Shih Tzus are described as affectionate and companion-oriented, while Yorkshire Terriers have a feisty terrier background. This guide explains what to consider before bringing one home and how to plan for grooming, training, and preventive care.

What Does a Shorkie Look Like?
There is no single correct Shorkie appearance. A mix may show features of either parent, and its coat can differ from both parent-breed profiles. A puppy’s appearance does not reliably predict its adult coat, health, or personality.
Small dogs need careful handling. A fall, being stepped on, rough play, or an encounter with a much larger dog can cause injury. Use gates where necessary, supervise interactions, and teach children to let the dog approach and avoid carrying it around.

How Big Does a Shorkie Get?
There is no authoritative mix-specific adult size range. The size of the parents may offer context, but it cannot guarantee a puppy’s adult weight or height. Be wary of anyone promising an exact adult size or using labels such as “teacup” as a guarantee.
Ask to meet the parents where possible and review their records. Choose based on the individual dog’s health and welfare, not on extreme smallness or a puppy photo.
Shorkie Temperament
A Shorkie may be affectionate and people-focused, alert and vocal, or more independent and active than expected. The Shih Tzu’s companion-dog background and the Yorkie’s terrier heritage are useful context, but neither predicts an individual dog’s behavior. Meet the dog and ask about its responses to handling, visitors, noise, and other animals.
Early positive socialization can help a dog become more comfortable with everyday experiences, but it does not guarantee that every adult will enjoy strangers, children, grooming, or other dogs. Avoid assuming the dog will be quiet, child-proof, or apartment-perfect.

Some may live well with respectful older children, but a small dog’s size makes careful handling essential. Do not assume that a small dog is automatically gentle or suited to rough play. An adult should supervise every interaction.
Teach children to:
- Let the dog approach instead of chasing it.
- Keep hands away from the dog’s food, chews, and sleeping area.
- Never pull its ears, tail, or coat.
- Interact on the floor rather than carrying the dog.
- Stop when the dog turns away, freezes, hides, growls, or repeatedly licks its lips.
Exercise and Daily Enrichment
Build an activity routine around the individual dog. Short walks, indoor play, sniffing, simple training, and rest are a reasonable starting point. Adjust for age, conditioning, weather tolerance, and veterinary advice. Some dogs may enjoy more lively engagement than others.
Useful options include:
- Short walks with time to sniff
- Food puzzles and scatter feeding
- Find-the-treat scent games
- Trick training
- Gentle play with appropriately sized toys
- Supervised play with a compatible dog
Without enrichment and training, a dog may become bored or vocal. Observe its behavior and adapt its routine rather than assuming every Shorkie has the same exercise needs.
Grooming a Shorkie
Grooming is an important recurring commitment, especially if the individual dog has a long or mat-prone coat. Shih Tzu and Yorkshire Terrier grooming guidance emphasizes regular brushing, and long coats may need daily attention. Inspect and comb the actual coat regularly, paying attention to areas where hair rubs or tangles, such as behind the ears, under a collar or harness, on the legs and belly, and around the sanitary area.
Coat care routine
- Check the coat regularly for tangles and mats, including beneath the top layer.
- Use tools suited to the dog’s coat; a soft or pin brush, metal comb, and slicker brush are common tool types.
- Keep facial hair from rubbing the eyes and inspect the eye area during grooming.
- Ask a professional groomer to recommend a maintenance schedule after assessing the coat.
- Introduce brushing, bathing, dryers, nail care, and face handling gradually and positively.
A short trim may reduce brushing but does not eliminate bathing, nail care, ear checks, face care, or regular coat inspection. Use nail-care tools only if you have been taught to use them safely.

Shedding and allergies
Coat and shedding vary, and the mix label cannot promise low shedding or low allergy impact. Do not assume a Shorkie is hypoallergenic. Anyone with allergies should spend time with the individual dog before committing.
Dental Care
Dental care is part of routine ownership. The American Veterinary Medical Association says brushing is the most effective home action between professional dental cleanings; daily brushing is best when feasible. Use dog toothpaste and introduce brushing gradually. Ask a veterinarian to check the dog’s teeth and gums at least yearly, and seek advice about any dental concerns.
A toothbrush or dental product does not replace a veterinary oral examination or treatment. Do not use human toothpaste unless a veterinarian specifically approves the product.

Training and House-Training
Use reward-based training from the first day home. Praise and rewards are a sound starting approach, while harsh corrections should be avoided. Keep sessions brief and consistent, and consider a puppy training class and early socialization.
Prioritize:
- Name response and recall foundations
- Handling tolerance for grooming and veterinary care
- A consistent toileting routine
- Calm settling and harness or leash skills
- Positive exposure to household sounds and new environments
House-training
Take a puppy to its toileting area after waking, eating, playing, and sleeping, and reward it promptly for going in the right place. When it cannot be supervised, use an appropriate safe area rather than giving it access to the whole home. Do not punish an accident discovered later. If a previously reliable adult dog suddenly urinates indoors, ask a veterinarian to assess possible medical causes.
Barking
Some dogs may inherit or develop alert barking, but it is not guaranteed. Identify the trigger, reduce exposure where practical, and reward calm behavior. If barking is persistent or driven by fear, ask a qualified trainer or veterinarian for help rather than relying on punishment.
Health and Preventive Care
Do not treat a “Shorkie health problems” list as a prediction. Parent-breed sources identify conditions that owners and breeders may discuss, but an individual mixed-breed dog’s risks depend on its history and health. Ask a veterinarian to advise on the individual dog, and review available records rather than assuming the cross cancels inherited risks.

Yorkshire Terrier sources discuss eye anomalies and luxating patella, and point to resources on Legg-Perthes disease, portosystemic shunts, collapsing trachea, and protein-losing enteropathy. These are topics for an informed conversation, not diagnoses for every Shorkie.
Health records and veterinary visits
The American Shih Tzu Club says a CHIC number requires an ACVO eye examination and an OFA-registered veterinary patella evaluation; hip and cardiac evaluations are additional optional tests. Yorkshire Terrier health resources also address eye and patella concerns. Health testing and clear records are useful, but no clearance guarantees a puppy’s future health.

Arrange a veterinary visit after adoption or purchase and follow an individualized preventive-care plan. AAHA says vaccine decisions should reflect risk, lifestyle, geography, and exposure; rabies requirements vary by jurisdiction. Do not follow a fixed vaccine schedule or make treatment decisions based only on the mix label.
Face, eyes, heat, and water
A Shih Tzu parent has a short face, but a mix may have a different muzzle and risk profile. Use caution in hot conditions, provide cool water and shade, and do not assume the dog is a confident swimmer. Ask a veterinarian about the individual dog’s breathing, eyes, and heat tolerance.

Feeding and Weight Management
Choose a complete diet suitable for the dog’s life stage and health status, and adjust portions with veterinary guidance and body-condition monitoring. Do not use a serving size based only on the mix label. WSAVA recommends evaluating nutrition through factors such as adequacy, life-stage suitability, calories, manufacturer expertise, quality control, and transparency—not marketing claims such as “premium” or “holistic.”
Keep fresh water available and discuss weight or diet changes with a veterinarian. Treats and chews should be considered as part of the dog’s overall feeding plan.

Investigate the individual dog and its records rather than relying on a designer-mix label.
- Ask for health records: Request the puppy’s veterinary care, parasite management, and immunization records, plus current parental test results where available.
- Ask about the parents: Request documented eye and patella evaluations and ask about known issues in the family lines. Meet the dam where possible and assess her health and behavior.
- Review the breeder’s practices: Ask about the puppy’s living conditions, contract, and return policy. A responsible breeder should be willing to discuss records and care.
- Observe the puppy: Ask about its handling experience, grooming exposure, and behavior in ordinary household settings.
- Avoid guarantees: Be cautious of claims that a mix label guarantees health, adult size, non-shedding, or hypoallergenic qualities.
When adopting, ask about observed temperament, grooming condition, food history, vaccination and parasite records, known medical findings, and compatibility with children and other animals. A shelter’s breed label is not genetic proof. Give the dog an individual veterinary examination and review whatever history is available.
Activities for Mixed-Breed Dogs
A Shih Tzu Yorkie mix is not eligible for full AKC purebred registration or conformation as a breed. Mixed-breed dogs may be eligible for AKC Canine Partners and can participate in many activities, including agility, obedience, rally, tracking, and scent work, subject to program rules. The AKC Canine Good Citizen program is another optional training framework with a 10-skill test.
Is a Shorkie Right for You?
A Shorkie may suit someone seeking a small companion who is prepared to learn the individual dog’s grooming needs, provide daily interaction and reward-based training, and arrange regular veterinary care. Do not choose one on the assumption that it will be quiet, independent, low-maintenance, child-proof, or predictable in adult appearance.
