Should you keep a coatimundi (coati) as a pet? Usually not. A coati is a wild, active mammal that needs lawful authorization, secure purpose-built housing, specialized veterinary care, foraging and enrichment, sanitation controls, and lifetime backup planning; private ownership may be legal in some jurisdictions, but it is unsuitable for most households.

Coatis can be intelligent, curious, and engaging, which explains their appeal. Those same traits can make them demanding, destructive, difficult to contain, and unpredictable as adults. The central distinction is legality versus suitability: a permit, where available, does not turn a wild species into an ordinary companion animal.

Key takeaways

  • A coati is a wild procyonid, not a domesticated dog or cat, even when a juvenile has been hand-raised around people.
  • White-nosed coatis naturally forage, climb, investigate, and manipulate objects, so responsible care requires secure, complex, purpose-built housing rather than an ordinary home or cage.
  • According to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo species profile (publication year not displayed), coatis average about 14 years in human care and some reach their late teens.
  • Coati ownership laws vary by country, state, county, and city; New Mexico, for example, generally requires a special permit for a resident to possess one.
  • For the average family or first-time exotic-pet owner, the practical and humane answer is no.

Can you keep a coatimundi (coati) as a pet?

Keeping a coatimundi (coati) as a pet may be legally possible for an appropriately authorized specialist in some jurisdictions, but a coati is not a suitable pet for most households. A responsible owner would need lawful authorization, escape-resistant and behaviorally complex housing, specialized veterinary care, a species-appropriate foraging plan, sanitation and bite protocols, and a lifetime backup plan.

That conclusion separates two questions that are often confused:

  • Can someone legally possess a coati? Sometimes, depending on location, species, origin, permits, and local rules.

What is a coati?

Coatis are wild mammals in the procyonid family, the group that includes raccoons, and belong to the genus Nasua. The white-nosed coati is Nasua narica; the South American coati is Nasua nasua. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s coati taxonomy page identifies Nasua as a genus containing two species.

“Coatimundi” is common in popular language and the pet trade, while “coati” is the clearer general term. Coatis are native to parts of North, Central, and South America. A long tail, expressive face, intelligence, and curiosity can make a coati appealing, but those traits do not make the species domesticated.

Why is a tame baby coati not the same as a domesticated pet?

A hand-raised juvenile may accept human contact, follow a caregiver, or appear affectionate, but tameness does not erase species-typical behavior. As a coati matures, the animal may become more territorial, destructive, difficult to handle, or defensive around food, sleeping areas, unfamiliar people, or veterinary procedures.

That does not mean every captive coati becomes aggressive or impossible to manage. Individual temperament, early experience, environment, health, and handling all matter. The safer prediction is that an adult coati remains a wild animal with complex behavior, not that a friendly baby will remain as predictable as a dog or cat.

What do coatis eat, and why is feeding difficult?

White-nosed coatis eat fruit, invertebrates, small rodents, and lizards, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo profile. Coatis forage on the ground and sometimes in trees, so a responsible diet must address both nutrition and the animal’s need to search, manipulate, and investigate.

A bowl can provide calories while leaving a highly active animal behaviorally deprived. Food may need to be distributed through safe, supervised foraging opportunities designed for the individual animal and enclosure. A homemade diet or supplement schedule should not be copied from a general internet page; a qualified exotic-animal veterinarian or documented zoological husbandry source should help design and monitor the plan.

Do coatis need to live in pairs or groups?

Coatis have complicated social needs rather than a simple “one or two” rule. The Smithsonian reports that females and young males may form bands of roughly four to 20 animals, while adult males are generally solitary except during breeding season.

Keeping one coati may deprive the animal of species-typical social opportunities. Keeping several coatis multiplies the enclosure, handling, veterinary, breeding-control, compatibility, and safety demands. The correct group depends on species, sex, age, temperament, enclosure capacity, and professional advice; buying two is not an automatic welfare solution.

Housing choice Potential benefit Major difficulty What it does not solve
One coati Simpler population management and fewer animal-to-animal conflicts May not provide species-typical social opportunities The coati’s need for climbing, foraging, supervision, and specialized care
Multiple coatis May better reflect social behavior for compatible females or young males Requires substantially more space, monitoring, veterinary planning, and breeding control Legal restrictions, escape risk, sanitation, or human-safety concerns
Adult male with others Social contact may be possible in carefully managed circumstances Adult males are generally solitary except during breeding season The need for expert assessment of sex, age, temperament, and compatibility

How long do coatis live in captivity?

According to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo (publication year not displayed), coatis live up to about seven years in the wild and average about 14 years in human care, with some reaching their late teens.

That is a long managed-care commitment. Planning must include adolescence, adulthood, illness, changing housing, travel, emergency treatment, loss of income, and the possibility that a mature animal becomes harder or less safe to handle. The relevant question is not “Would I enjoy a baby coati?” but “Can I support a wild mammal throughout its entire managed-care lifespan?”

What kind of enclosure does a coati need?

A coati needs secure, escape-resistant, weather-appropriate facilities with both vertical and horizontal complexity. An ordinary room, backyard fence, dog kennel, or small cage is not an adequate default because coatis can climb, dig, chew, open things, investigate food, and ingest unsuitable objects.

A responsible facility would need:

  • secure walls, doors, latches, and roof or overhead protection against escape;
  • climbing structures and safe elevated areas;
  • digging and foraging opportunities that can be cleaned and inspected;
  • shade, shelter, safe surfaces, and protection from unsuitable weather;
  • multiple feeding and enrichment stations;
  • cleaning access without creating an escape route; and
  • a separate area for medical care, introductions, behavioral management, or temporary isolation.

Exact enclosure dimensions should come from qualified zoological or exotic-mammal husbandry guidance for the specific species, age, sex, climate, and social arrangement. A generic “large cage” recommendation is not precise enough to establish welfare.

Are coatimundis legal to own?

Coatimundi ownership is not governed by one universal U.S. rule. Federal, state, county, and municipal requirements may differ, and the answer can depend on the species, whether the animal is native wildlife, its origin, import route, facility type, and permit category.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife explains in its official exotic-pet guidance that wildlife generally cannot simply be taken from the wild and kept at home and that many exotic or non-native animals are prohibited or require specific authorization. New Mexico wildlife guidance states that it is generally illegal for New Mexico residents to have a coati as a pet, even if the animal was acquired outside New Mexico, unless the resident has a special permit.

Importing or transporting an animal can add another layer of regulation. The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service import guidance explains that regulated live-animal imports may require permits, veterinary health certificates, quarantine, and other entry conditions.

What should you check before paying a seller?

  1. Identify the exact species and confirm whether the species is lawful where you live.
  2. Ask the state wildlife agency about possession, acquisition, transport, and housing rules.
  3. Check county and city ordinances, zoning, nuisance rules, and any facility requirements.
  4. Verify the animal’s lawful origin, records, permits, and transport documents independently rather than relying on the seller’s assurances.
  5. Get written confirmation where possible before paying, importing, transporting, or building a facility.

Contact the state wildlife agency, local authorities, and an attorney or licensed wildlife-compliance professional before acquiring a coati. Do not rely on an old online list of “states where coatis are legal,” because laws and local requirements can change.

Can a regular veterinarian treat a coati?

A regular companion-animal veterinarian should not be assumed to treat a coati. Before acquisition, confirm that a clinic is genuinely comfortable with exotic mammals or wildlife-related species and can provide emergency support or a referral pathway.

Ask the clinic specifically about:

  • routine examinations and whether the clinic accepts coatis;
  • anesthesia, dental care, surgery, fecal testing, and parasite control;
  • infectious-disease evaluation and recordkeeping;
  • emergency treatment and after-hours arrangements;
  • safe transport and handling procedures; and
  • referrals for advanced diagnostics or treatment.

The USDA APHIS description of attending-veterinarian duties covers communication, disease monitoring and prevention, husbandry, nutrition, emergency care, staff knowledge, and humane euthanasia. Those categories illustrate the breadth of planning a nondomesticated mammal may require; they are not a substitute for a coati-specific veterinary relationship.

What should you do about bites, scratches, feces, and disease?

A coati does not need to be sick or “aggressive” for bites and scratches to become a serious household-management issue. The household needs a plan for safe handling, children and visitors, animal transport, cleaning, contaminated surfaces, feces, and immediate reporting of exposures.

The CDC states: Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals usually transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. Read the CDC rabies guidance for the public-health context. If a coati bites or scratches someone, wash the wound promptly with soap and water, obtain urgent medical advice, and contact local public-health or animal-control authorities for exposure instructions. Do not decide independently that an exposure is harmless, and do not handle or test the animal outside professional direction.

The CDC wildlife guidance warns that getting too close to wild animals can injure people or the animal and identifies wildlife-associated hazards including rabies. CDC-published reports have also described human-to-animal SARS-CoV-2 transmission evidence in wild coatis in Brazil and examined influenza A exposure and respiratory receptors in urban coatis. These studies do not establish a simple household-pet risk percentage, but they support careful hygiene, avoiding unnecessary face-to-face contact, and veterinary oversight.

Fecal hygiene and parasite control also matter. A CDC report concerning an exotic-animal collection that included coatis and kinkajous recommended deworming, sanitation, and environmental decontamination in the context of raccoon-roundworm concerns. That report is not a diagnosis of every coati; it is a practical reminder that waste handling and parasite prevention are part of responsible care.

Can a household meet the coati-care standard?

The following test is more useful than asking whether a coati looks friendly. Every category must be solved before acquisition, not after the animal arrives.

Decision area Minimum question Warning sign
Legal feasibility Are possession, acquisition, transport, and housing authorized in every relevant jurisdiction? The seller says a permit is unnecessary or tells you to check later.
Space and enclosure Can you provide secure, complex, weather-appropriate facilities with separation capability? The plan is an ordinary cage, indoor room, or unsecured yard.
Behavioral fit Can the household manage climbing, digging, opening, chewing, destructiveness, maturation, and handling limits? The decision depends on a baby’s current friendliness.
Veterinary access Has a qualified clinic agreed to routine and emergency care before acquisition? You are still searching for a veterinarian after deciding to buy.
Health and sanitation Can you manage bites, scratches, feces, parasites, cleaning, and exposure reporting? Children, visitors, or other animals will have uncontrolled access.
Lifetime backup Who will take the animal if you move, become ill, lose income, or can no longer handle it safely? The only backup plan is release or an unverified “rescue.”

What should you never do with a coati?

  • Do not remove a wild coati from the environment and take it home.
  • Do not accept undocumented origin or permits because a seller claims the animal is legal.
  • Do not transport a coati across state or national borders casually.
  • Do not release an unwanted captive coati. Release can harm the animal, native wildlife, and the public and may violate wildlife law.
  • Do not treat “sanctuary” as proof of legitimacy. Check licensing, veterinary records, transparency, and lifetime-placement standards.

If the attraction is seeing or supporting coatis, a legitimate sanctuary, accredited zoo, or wildlife-rehabilitation authority is a safer direction than private ownership. A sanctuary label alone is not enough; verify that the organization is transparent about authorization, care, veterinary oversight, and permanent placement.

What is the final verdict on keeping a coati as a pet?

Do not keep a coati as a pet unless you are an appropriately authorized, highly prepared specialist with purpose-built facilities and reliable exotic-animal veterinary support. For an average family, first-time exotic-pet owner, or person attracted mainly to a cute juvenile, the humane and practical answer is no.

The strongest alternative is to support or visit a legitimate institution that can meet a coati’s behavioral, social, medical, and containment needs. Affection for the species is a good reason to learn about coatis; it is not, by itself, a reason to bring one into a household.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a coati a good pet?

A coati is a wild procyonid, not a domesticated pet, so most households should not keep one. Private ownership may be possible in some jurisdictions only with the required permits, purpose-built housing, specialized veterinary care, and safety planning.

What states allow coatis as pets?

Coati laws vary by state and local jurisdiction, and some places prohibit possession or require a special permit. Check state wildlife agencies, county and city authorities, and transport or import rules before paying a seller.

How long do coatis live in captivity?

Coatis average about 14 years in human care, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, and some reach their late teens. A prospective owner must plan for the animal’s entire managed-care lifespan rather than only its juvenile period.

Can a regular veterinarian treat a coati?

A regular veterinarian should not be assumed to treat a coati. Before acquisition, confirm that an exotic-mammal veterinarian will provide routine and emergency care, including examinations, anesthesia, fecal testing, parasite control, surgery or dental referrals, and safe transport guidance.

What should I do if my coati bites or scratches someone?

If a coati bites or scratches someone, wash the wound promptly with soap and water, seek urgent medical advice, and contact local public-health or animal-control authorities for exposure instructions. Rabies and other exposure decisions must be handled by medical and public-health professionals.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A coati may be legally possessible for a properly authorized specialist in some places, but it is not a good pet for the average household. Wild behavior, complex housing, specialized veterinary care, sanitation demands, legal uncertainty, and a potential 14-year-or-longer commitment make professional facilities and legitimate institutions a better fit.
