The Sphynx is nearly hairless, not truly hairless, and its exposed skin needs regular attention. These active, people-oriented cats need companionship and a warm, safe home; prospective owners should also discuss breed-associated health concerns with a veterinarian.
A Sphynx may suit someone seeking an affectionate, interactive companion, but is a poor fit for a home where the cat would be left alone for long periods. Its care includes monitoring skin and ears, limiting sun exposure, and providing daily interaction.

Appearance and distinctive features
The Sphynx is a medium-sized, muscular cat with prominent ears, wrinkles, and expressive eyes. Its skin may feel warm and soft, with a texture compared to peach or nectarine, chamois, or warm suede. Some cats have fine down or short hair on the nose, ears, tail, feet, or other areas, so individuals are not necessarily completely hairless.
The breed can show different colors and patterns in its skin. Wrinkles are a characteristic feature, but irritated or sore skin should not be treated as normal; consult a veterinarian if you notice persistent redness, itching, or lesions.

Temperament and behavior
Sphynx cats are often outgoing, curious, intelligent, and talkative. Many seek attention and physical warmth, follow people around, and enjoy interactive play. They may not do well when left alone for long periods, so consider whether your household can provide regular company and enrichment.
Wand toys, food puzzles, climbing structures, and short reward-based training sessions can provide activity and mental stimulation. Individual preferences vary.
A Sphynx may live with children or other pets, but introductions should be gradual and interactions supervised. Children should handle the cat gently because its skin is delicate. A companion animal may provide company, but does not replace human attention.

- GENTLE ON HAIRLESS SKIN: Soft carbonized bamboo fibers glide over Sphynx, Peterbald and Donskoy skin without scratching, redness or stress, so even sensitive cats stay calm in the tub.
- REMOVES OILS AND DEAD SKIN: Bamboo charcoal mitt lifts excess sebum, dander and skin buildup that hairless cats are prone to, leaving the coatless body fresh between full baths or shampoos.
- MACHINE WASHABLE AND REUSABLE: Toss the glove in a mesh bag on a gentle cold cycle, air dry flat, and reuse for years; the carbonized-bamboo weave stays fresh between washes for easy care.
- FITS ADULT HANDS, GRIPS WIGGLY CATS: One stretchy size hugs most adult hands snugly, freeing fingers to hold a fussy or wiggly Sphynx steady while you lather every fold and armpit fast.
- WORKS DRY OR WET, ON OTHER PETS TOO: Use damp with shampoo for full baths, or dry to wipe down between baths; also handy for hairless dogs, Cornish Rex and other low-shedding companions.
Is the Sphynx hypoallergenic?
No. Sphynx cats should not be considered hypoallergenic or reliably low-allergen. Bathing may reduce allergens present on the skin, but it does not make the breed allergy-free.
Anyone with allergies should spend time around the breed, and ideally the particular cat, before adopting to see how they respond. Discuss allergy symptoms with a medical professional.
Skin care and grooming
Sphynx skin produces natural oils that can build up. Published guidance ranges from regular bathing to frequent sponging, but these are source-specific recommendations rather than a universal schedule. Monitor your cat for oily residue or irritation and ask your veterinarian what routine suits that individual.
Cat grooming wipes may be an optional aid for cleaning oily skin between baths. For bathing, use a cat-safe product; some shampoos and grooming products can irritate cats’ skin. Stop using a product if it causes irritation and seek veterinary advice. Rinse thoroughly and dry your cat carefully in a warm, safe place.

Routine care checklist
- Check the skin: Watch for oil buildup, irritation, sores, or other changes.
- Clean as appropriate: Use wiping or bathing based on your cat’s needs and veterinary advice.
- Check the ears: Assess them regularly for excess wax or debris. Ask your veterinarian whether and how to clean them.
- Maintain the nails and teeth: Ask your veterinarian for guidance on nail care and dental hygiene.
- Wash bedding: Regular laundering helps manage oil residue and makes it easier to notice unusual discharge.
Temperature, sunlight, and home safety
Sphynx cats seek warmth, and their exposed skin can be sunburned. Provide a warm, safe indoor environment and limit direct sun exposure. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends indoor living or supervised outdoor time for safety.
Do not assume that a particular room temperature or clothing is necessary for every cat. If you are considering clothing or heating products, prioritize the cat’s comfort and safety and ask your veterinarian for advice.
Food, exercise, and equipment
Feed a complete cat food that meets AAFCO-established standards, and work with your veterinarian to choose portions appropriate for your cat’s age, body condition, and individual needs. Do not use a breed-wide food-consumption figure as a fixed feeding prescription.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM, is a breed-associated health concern. Early disease may have no obvious outward signs. Ask your veterinarian whether heart screening is appropriate for your cat and, if needed, seek advice from a veterinary cardiologist. Screening practices can change, so follow current veterinary guidance.
Seek urgent veterinary care for difficult breathing, collapse, marked weakness, or sudden inability to use a limb.
Other reported health concerns
The Cat Fanciers’ Association also lists hereditary myopathy, respiratory issues in kittens, sensitive digestion, urticaria pigmentosa, and periodontal disease among concerns reported in the breed. These are breed-level cautions, not diagnoses or predictions that an individual cat will develop a condition. Discuss relevant history and symptoms with your veterinarian.

If you are choosing a kitten, ask the breeder about health history and any screening performed, and discuss what records to expect with your veterinarian. A test result should not be treated as proof that a cat can never develop a condition.
Choosing a Sphynx kitten or adult
- Ask about the cat’s health history and the health of its relatives.
- Request available veterinary, vaccination, and screening records, and discuss them with your veterinarian.
- Observe the cat in its usual environment and look for signs of illness or distress.
- Ask how the cat has been socialized and what support the breeder or rescue provides after adoption.
- Review any adoption or purchase agreement, including what happens if you can no longer keep the cat.
Be cautious of sellers who dismiss health questions or claim that a Sphynx is maintenance-free or allergy-proof. Choose for health and temperament, not an extreme appearance. Costs vary by location and individual health needs; this research did not establish a reliable current price range.
FAQ
Do Sphynx cats need baths?
They need regular attention to skin oils, but there is no single schedule that fits every cat. Published guidance includes bathing or wiping; ask your veterinarian what routine is appropriate for your cat.
Can Sphynx cats live outdoors?
VCA Animal Hospitals recommends indoor living or supervised outdoor time. Exposed skin can be sunburned, and outdoor access also raises safety concerns.
Are Sphynx cats good for people with allergies?
They are not reliably hypoallergenic. Spend time around the breed and, if possible, the particular cat before adopting to see how you respond.
Are Sphynx cats high-maintenance?
They need regular attention to skin, companionship, and sun safety. Their care is different from that of a coated cat, not maintenance-free; ask a veterinarian about ear, dental, and health-screening needs.
The Bottom Line
The Sphynx is an active, people-oriented companion with nearly hairless skin that needs regular care. Be prepared to provide company, a warm and safe home, skin monitoring, and protection from sun exposure. Discuss breed-associated health concerns and individual screening needs with a veterinarian, and do not assume the breed is hypoallergenic.
