Tably App Uses AI to Check Whether a Cat May Be Comfortable

Tably was marketed as an AI cat happiness app, but its science focused on facial signs linked to pain or discomfort. Here is what the technology could—and could not—tell owners in 2026.

Short answer: Tably was not a true cat “happiness detector.” The Sylvester.ai app used computer vision and facial cues associated mainly with feline pain or discomfort. Its results could help an owner notice a change, especially after surgery, but they could not diagnose illness, measure happiness, or replace a veterinarian.

What was Tably?

Tably was a smartphone app developed by Sylvester.ai and reported in 2021 as a beta-era tool for analyzing a cat’s facial expression. An owner could point a phone camera at the cat or take a photograph, then receive a result described in some coverage as “happy” or “not happy.”

That wording made the app easy to understand, but it was broader than the underlying science. Tably was designed to look for facial patterns associated with possible acute pain or discomfort—not to read subjective emotions such as happiness, sadness, anxiety, or love. Wired’s reporting on the original product described it as a machine-learning system based on the Feline Grimace Scale.

How did the original app work?

  1. Take or upload a photograph of the cat’s face.
  2. Let the app identify and analyze the facial features.
  3. Receive an indication of whether the expression appeared more consistent with comfort or possible discomfort.
  4. Use that indication alongside the cat’s behavior, physical condition, and veterinary advice.

The system examined subtle features including:

  • Eye narrowing or squinting
  • Ear position
  • Head position
  • Muzzle tension
  • Whisker position
  • Other facial-muscle changes

These features correspond to “action units” used in the Feline Grimace Scale, a veterinary pain-assessment framework. Cats often hide pain, so changes around the eyes, ears, muzzle, whiskers, and head can provide useful clues that an owner might miss.

What is the Feline Grimace Scale?

The Feline Grimace Scale is not a general cat-emotion meter. It is a structured way of observing facial changes that may be associated with acute pain. A trained observer considers features such as ear position, orbital tightening around the eyes, muzzle tension, whisker position, and head position.

The important distinction is this:

What it is What it is not
A framework for observing signs that may be consistent with pain A direct measurement of happiness or emotional wellbeing
A possible screening or monitoring aid A diagnosis of a disease or injury
One part of a broader assessment A substitute for a physical examination

Facial expressions must be interpreted in context. A sleeping cat may have narrowed eyes. A startled cat may pull its ears back. A cat watching a sound or object may hold its head and ears in a way that resembles discomfort. The same appearance can therefore have different explanations. Experts quoted in the original reporting cautioned that a resting or distracted cat could be misread if its face were considered in isolation.

Does Tably detect happiness or pain?

It is more accurate to describe Tably as a possible comfort-or-pain signal than as a happiness detector.

A concerning facial result might indicate that the cat deserves closer observation. It cannot tell you why the cat looks uncomfortable. Possible causes could include pain after a procedure, illness, fear, irritation, fatigue, or a poor-quality photograph.

A reassuring result is also limited. Cats can have serious problems that do not produce obvious facial changes, and some medical conditions are expressed mainly through posture, movement, appetite, breathing, urination, vomiting, or general behavior.

What does the percentage or confidence score mean?

If an app displays a percentage, do not read it as “the cat is 97% happy.” A confidence score generally describes how strongly the model matched the image to patterns in its training or evaluation data. It is not a clinical probability, a disease-risk percentage, or a measurement of emotional wellbeing.

That distinction matters because an apparently precise number can create false confidence. A high model-confidence result may still be wrong if the cat is sleeping, the face is partly hidden, the lighting is poor, or the animal falls outside the population on which the model performs best.

How accurate was Tably?

In 2021, a Sylvester.ai product manager told Wired that the system could reach 97% accuracy for a high-quality, full-face, front-facing image of adult cats of most breeds. That was a company-reported product claim under specific conditions—not an independently verified accuracy guarantee for every household photograph.

A later technology-directory document cited precision above 85% for the Tably model. That figure was also presented in a technology or promotional context rather than as a universal, independently reproduced clinical benchmark. The directory material is available here.

Those figures should not be interpreted as proof that:

  • The app works equally well for every cat
  • It predicts disease
  • It measures happiness
  • It performs the same way in dim rooms, with moving cats, or with partial faces
  • The current Sylvester app uses exactly the same model as the original Tably beta

The Feline Grimace Scale has a veterinary and scientific basis, but that does not automatically validate every AI implementation built around it. The performance of an app depends on its training data, image quality, supported cats, threshold settings, and real-world testing.

What happened to Tably?

The original Tably product was associated with 2021 beta coverage. In 2026, current app-store evidence points to a Sylvester-branded successor or product evolution rather than an app still prominently marketed under the Tably name.

The U.S. Apple listing is titled Sylvester: Cat Comfort Check. It describes a workflow in which an owner uploads one clear, front-facing photograph and receives a comfort insight within seconds. The listing also promotes comfort-history tracking and sharing results with a veterinarian. It states that more than 20,000 cats are represented on the platform and warns that the tool is not a diagnosis.

Sylvester AI’s Google Play developer page also lists “Sylvester.ai Cat Comfort Check.” This indicates a current Android developer listing, but the available evidence does not establish that the Android and iPhone versions have identical features, pricing, or regional availability.

It is safest to call the current product an apparent successor, rebrand, or evolution of Tably—not to claim without confirmation that it is technically the unchanged 2021 model.

  • Use bright, even lighting rather than strong backlighting.
  • Capture the entire face, including both ears and the muzzle.
  • Keep the camera roughly level with the cat’s head.
  • Avoid motion blur and heavy shadows.
  • Do not scan a face hidden under furniture, behind a paw, or behind thick fur.
  • Keep other animals out of the frame.
  • For trend tracking, take photographs under reasonably similar conditions.

Never force a frightened, painful, or recovering cat to pose for a photograph. The cat’s welfare comes before obtaining a better scan.

Is it useful after surgery?

Potentially, yes—as an additional observation tool. After surgery or another procedure, repeated observations under similar conditions may help an owner notice whether the cat’s apparent comfort is changing from its own baseline. A series of concerning results, especially alongside reduced appetite, hiding, reluctance to move, or sensitivity to touch, is a reason to contact the veterinary team.

However, postoperative instructions from the veterinarian take priority. Do not change pain medicine, add human medication, or wait for another scan because an app result seems reassuring.

Which cats may be harder for the system to analyze?

The historical Tably listing reported reduced accuracy or support for some cats, including cats with darker facial features, brachycephalic breeds such as Persians and Himalayans, and some long-faced breeds such as Abyssinians, Siamese, and Sphynx cats. Those limitations belong to the historical Tably information and should not automatically be treated as a complete specification for the current Sylvester model.

The current listing gives a more general warning that some breeds or life stages may not be supported. Kittens deserve particular caution: the historical product was described around adult cats, and the current listing also indicates limitations involving certain life stages.

Performance may be less dependable with:

  • Kittens or very young cats
  • Flat-faced or unusually long-faced breeds
  • Dark facial markings
  • Unusual facial anatomy
  • Long fur obscuring facial features
  • Partially visible, poorly lit, or blurry faces

This is a model limitation, not a defect in the cat. If the app cannot confidently analyze a particular animal, rely more heavily on direct observation and veterinary care.

How to interpret a concerning result

Use the result as a prompt to assess the whole cat, not as a diagnosis. Check:

  • Is the cat eating and drinking normally?
  • Is it using the litter box?
  • Is it hiding more than usual?
  • Is it walking, jumping, and changing position normally?
  • Has grooming changed?
  • Is breathing normal?
  • Are there vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding, weakness, or unusual vocalizations?
  • Did the change begin suddenly?
  • Is the cat recovering from surgery or another procedure?

Save the photograph and result if the app allows it, note the date and symptoms, and share the information with your veterinarian. A repeated concerning result combined with physical or behavioral changes is more meaningful than one isolated scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a reassuring result rule out illness?

No. A favorable result cannot prove that a cat is healthy or pain-free. Facial cues are only one possible sign, and some illnesses do not produce a prominent grimace. A poor photograph can also make the output unreliable.

If your cat is behaving abnormally, losing appetite, hiding, struggling to move, or showing another concerning change, contact a veterinarian even if the app produces a reassuring result. Symptoms, behavior, and professional assessment outrank an app score.

When to ignore the app and seek urgent care

Do not use Tably or Sylvester to triage an emergency. Seek immediate veterinary advice for signs such as:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Collapse or inability to stand
  • Severe bleeding
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Suspected poisoning
  • Inability to urinate or suspected urinary blockage
  • Seizures
  • Severe trauma
  • Extreme lethargy or sudden deterioration

A cat with an emergency may not show an obvious facial expression, and waiting for a photograph-based result can delay life-saving treatment.

Privacy, price, and availability questions

Before uploading photographs, review the current app’s privacy policy and permissions. Important questions include where pet photographs are stored, whether images are retained, whether they are used to improve models, and whether data can be deleted. The available dossier does not establish the complete current data-retention terms.

The current iPhone listing shows a free download with in-app purchases, but the exact U.S. subscription price was not reliably visible in the available listing data. Pricing, free-tier access, country availability, and Android feature parity may change, so check the live store page before signing up. The available evidence does not confirm that the current product is offered identically in every country.

Alternatives to an AI comfort check

You do not need an app to begin monitoring a cat’s wellbeing. A simple log can record appetite, water intake, litter-box use, mobility, grooming, sleep, hiding, posture, vocalization, and reactions to touch. Short videos can also help a veterinarian evaluate movement or breathing changes.

Owners can study the principles of the Feline Grimace Scale, but self-scoring should remain educational rather than diagnostic. A veterinary examination is still needed when signs persist, worsen, or conflict with the app’s result. The most useful “alternative” to an AI reading is often a clear baseline record and a timely conversation with a licensed veterinarian.

Verdict: useful clue, misleading headline

Tably was an interesting attempt to make feline pain-related facial analysis more accessible to pet owners. Its strongest use case was not answering “Is my cat happy?” but helping an owner notice that a cat’s face may look different from normal and prompting closer observation.

The current Sylvester: Cat Comfort Check appears to continue that general comfort-monitoring idea, with photo insights, history tracking, and veterinarian sharing. But the available evidence does not prove that it is identical to the original Tably model or that its earlier accuracy claims apply unchanged today.

Use it as one small piece of evidence—particularly for tracking changes—not as a diagnosis, emotional truth machine, or reason to delay veterinary care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tably still available?

The original Tably branding appears to have been superseded. Current 2026 store evidence points to Sylvester: Cat Comfort Check on iPhone, with a Sylvester AI Android developer listing. The sources do not confirm that the current product is technically identical to the 2021 Tably beta.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the app tell whether my cat is happy?

Not reliably. It analyzes facial cues associated mainly with possible pain or discomfort. It does not directly measure happiness, sadness, anxiety, or overall emotional wellbeing.

Does a low discomfort result mean my cat is healthy?

No. A reassuring result cannot rule out illness, especially when symptoms are expressed through appetite, breathing, movement, urination, vomiting, or behavior rather than facial expression.

Can I use it for a kitten or every cat breed?

Do not assume so. Historical Tably information identified limitations involving some breeds, facial features, and adult-only use. The current Sylvester listing also warns that some breeds or life stages may not be supported.

Is the app a replacement for a veterinarian?

No. It is an observation or support tool. A concerning, repeated, or contradictory result should be discussed with a veterinarian, and emergency symptoms require immediate professional care.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Tably—and its apparent Sylvester successor—may help cat owners spot possible discomfort, but “AI cat happiness detector” is an entertaining shortcut, not a scientifically precise description. Treat every result as a clue, consider the whole cat, and let a veterinarian make medical decisions.
