The phrase named by dog trainer and behavior consultant Adrienne Farricelli is “Who’s a good boy?”—with “Good boy” and “Good girl” as alternatives. But there is no evidence that those exact words trigger an instant dopamine rush in every dog. Research suggests that some dogs value praise, while the reward that works best depends on the individual dog.
What is the three-word phrase?
Parade Pets named “Who’s a good boy?” as the phrase, and also cited “Good boy” or “Good girl” as alternatives. Farricelli’s explanation, as quoted in the October 3, 2026 article, is that cheerful praise paired consistently with touch or treats can engage a dog’s reward system when it follows a desired behavior. That is a trainer’s explanation reported by a secondary source—not proof that the wording itself produces an immediate neurochemical effect in every dog. Parade Pets
What does the dog research actually show?
A 2016 fMRI study by Gregory S. Berns and colleagues examined 15 awake dogs and compared responses to cues predicting food, verbal praise, or no reward. In 13 of the 15 dogs, responses in the ventral caudate to praise-predicting cues were roughly equal to or greater than responses to food-predicting cues. The researchers were studying reward-related brain responses to cues—not testing “Who’s a good boy?” as a phrase or directly measuring dopamine release. Berns et al., 2016
The finding supports a more careful conclusion: social praise can be valuable to some dogs, and dogs differ in what they find rewarding. It does not show that all dogs respond to verbal praise, that one particular phrase is uniquely effective, or that a visible reaction proves a dopamine release.

How to use praise in training
- Choose a clear cue. Use a cheerful phrase such as “Good boy” or “Good girl” consistently, so it can become associated with the behavior and what follows.
- Say it right after the behavior. A reward is easier for a dog to connect with the action when it follows promptly and predictably. Dogs Trust and VCA describe praise as one option in reward-based training. Dogs Trust: positive reinforcement training and VCA: predictable rewards
- Pair it with what your dog values. Depending on the dog and situation, that might be a treat, a toy, play, or affection. Praise can accompany a reward rather than having to work as the only reward. This is a practical application of the sources’ guidance on varied rewards and individual preferences, not a prescription tested for every dog.
- Watch the dog’s response. If a phrase does not seem motivating, try a different reward or context. Petting is not automatically rewarding for every dog, and a lack of enthusiasm for a particular cue does not mean the dog is incapable of bonding with you. VCA: predictable rewards
Why the phrase is not a magic training shortcut
The useful part is the relationship between a behavior, a consistent cue, and a reward the dog actually wants—not a guaranteed effect from three specific words. A happy tone may make praise pleasant, but the cited fMRI research cannot establish that it causes an instant dopamine rush.
