Peacock feathers are brilliant mainly because of structural coloration: microscopic, ordered features in each feather barbule interact with light. Melanin is part of that structure, but the colors are not produced by a simple layer of blue or green dye. As a male moves his train, the viewing angle changes, shifting the reflected colors and producing iridescence.
Those feathers are also a courtship signal, but the evidence does not support a universal rule that peahens always choose the male with the largest train or the most eyespots. Studies have linked some properties of eyespot brightness and changing color contrast with female visits and mating success, while results for train size and eyespot number vary among populations.
How microscopic feather structure creates color
A peacock feather’s visible color begins in the tiny barbules that branch from each feather barb. In the male green peafowl (Pavo muticus) examined by Zi and colleagues, the cortex of differently colored barbules contained a two-dimensional, photonic-crystal-like arrangement: melanin rods connected by keratin, with air spaces between them.
This architecture acts somewhat like an optical filter. Its spacing and repeated periods determine which wavelengths are reflected and how reflected colors combine. The PNAS paper summarizes the mechanism as follows: “We find that the cortex in differently colored barbules, which contains a 2D photonic-crystal structure, is responsible for coloration.”

Measured dimensions in one sampled feather
Zi and colleagues measured lattice constants of approximately 140 nanometres for blue barbules, 150 nm for green, and 165 nm for yellow. They reported roughly 9–12 structural periods in blue and green barbules, about six in yellow, and about four in brown. These are measurements from the sampled green-peafowl feather in that study, not universal values for every peacock feather.
The color therefore is not “pigment-free.” Melanin rods are part of the nanostructure. The important distinction is that nanoscale organization, refractive-index differences and optical interference produce the intense reflected colors that pigment alone would not explain.

Why the colors change when the bird moves
Structural color is angle-dependent. Changing the angle at which light enters and leaves the barbule changes which wavelengths are reinforced, so a blue, green or bronze region can appear to shift as the feather or viewer moves. This is iridescence.
In Zi and colleagues’ glycerin-immersion experiment, liquid filled air spaces in a green barbule and reduced the refractive-index contrast. The reflectance peak shifted toward longer wavelengths by about 12 nm under that experimental setup. Together with the angle-dependent shifts, the result supports a photonic-structure explanation rather than a pigment-only one.

What a peacock is displaying during courtship
A courting male does not present a motionless fan for inspection. He raises and spreads the train, moves his body and feathers, and creates a changing visual field. A 2016 biomechanics study combining field recordings with laboratory experiments reported that train mechanics allow the colorful eyespots to remain nearly stationary against a dynamic, iridescent background. In practical terms, motion changes the background and shimmer while helping the eyespots remain visually prominent.
That mechanical finding explains how the display can be conspicuous, but it does not by itself prove how strongly the feature changes a female’s decision. Optical performance and behavioral preference are related questions and require different evidence.

Do peahens choose males because of their feathers?
Research supports a qualified yes: feather signals can be associated with mate choice, but no single train measurement works as a universal rule.
| Study or evidence | Trait measured | Reported result | What it can—and cannot—show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loyau and colleagues (2007) | Eyespot brightness, hue, chroma and color contrast from stationary and changing viewing angles | Brightness correlated with male mating success; the maximum change in color contrast correlated with female visitation frequency and mating success. | Suggests females may use both static and dynamic (iridescent) color properties. These are associations, not proof that color alone caused each mating outcome. |
| Petrie, Halliday and Sanders (1991) | Train morphology and eyespot count | In one lek of ten males, train morphology accounted for more than 50% of variation in mating success; males with more eyespots tended to mate with more females, and the male ultimately chosen was usually the one with the largest eyespot count among males visited. | An important result from one observed lek, not evidence of a universal preference across peafowl populations. |
| Dakin and colleagues (2011) | Natural train length and displayed eyespot number | Peahens rarely preferred males displaying more eyespots; ordinary variation in train length and eyespot count did not predict mating success in their study. | Challenges the simple “more eyespots always wins” interpretation. Females may reject males with unusually reduced eyespot numbers while using other cues among typical males. |
| Takahashi and colleagues (2008) | Train as a possible indicator of condition and choice target | The train was not a universal target of female choice in the studied population and did not reliably reflect male condition. | Shows why train size should not be treated as a guaranteed signal of health or offspring quality. |
How to reconcile the apparently conflicting findings
Different traits were tested
Brightness and angle-dependent contrast are not the same trait as train length or eyespot count. A study can find an association for changing color contrast while finding no reliable relationship between mating success and the number of visible eyespots.

Different populations and designs were used
The 1991 result came from one lek of ten males. Other work examined different populations and used different combinations of field observation, spectrometry and behavioral analysis. A pattern in one social or ecological setting may not generalize to every population.
Association is weaker than demonstrated preference
When a color measurement correlates with visits or mating success, it identifies a signal associated with those outcomes. It does not establish that females ignored all other cues or that changing that feature alone would produce the same result. Strong causal claims require controlled manipulation.
The most defensible synthesis is that the train is part of an elaborate, moving courtship signal. Peahens can respond to visual information in it, including some properties of structural color, but the available studies do not show that the train alone determines mate choice or guarantees male quality.
Where feather development fits in
A 2025 study examined how a zigzag pattern of feather formation relates to train symmetry and variation in eyespot number. This work helps explain how the ornament’s architecture and visible differences arise during development. It does not establish that developmental patterning settles which males females prefer; development and mate-choice evidence answer separate questions.
What the science establishes
- Strongly supported: brilliant peacock feather colors arise largely from ordered nanoscale structure in the barbule cortex, involving melanin, keratin and air spaces.
- Supported by optical measurements: changing viewing angle alters reflected wavelengths, producing iridescence; the glycerin experiment provides an additional test of the refractive-index mechanism.
- Supported as study-level associations: eyespot brightness and maximum changes in color contrast were linked with female visitation or mating success in one colorimetric study.
- Mixed: train size and eyespot count do not predict mating success consistently across studies or populations.
- Not established by these studies: that peahens universally choose the biggest train, that the train alone reveals male health, or that it guarantees superior offspring.
Bottom line
Peacock feathers are colorful because their microscopic architecture manipulates light, not because they are simply coated in bright pigment. The same structure makes the colors shift with angle, and the moving train turns that iridescence into a dynamic courtship display. Females appear able to use some of its visual properties, but mate choice is context-dependent: no single measure of train size, eyespot number or color explains every population’s mating decisions.
