Three Ways to Optimize Swine Health

Optimize swine health with three connected systems: rigorous daily biosecurity, dependable feed-and-water and housing routines, and veterinarian-guided vaccination, surveillance, and rapid response.

The most reliable way to optimize swine health is to combine three systems: daily biosecurity, consistent feed-and-water and housing routines, and a veterinarian-guided program of vaccination, surveillance, and rapid response. None works well in isolation. Together, they reduce disease entry and spread while supporting welfare and production.

1. Make biosecurity a daily system

USDA APHIS describes biosecurity as a vital part of keeping animals healthy. The goal is to block direct, indirect, and insect-borne transmission before a pathogen reaches susceptible pigs or moves between pens.

Write the plan with the herd veterinarian

Use a written site plan that assigns responsibilities, defines entry and cleaning procedures, and is reviewed with the herd veterinarian. A plan only protects pigs when every worker, shift, contractor, and visitor follows the same steps.

Control people, clothing, footwear, vehicles, and equipment

  • Restrict visitors to those who are necessary, and keep a log of visitors, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Use a controlled entry point with clear instructions for hand hygiene, clothing changes, and footwear changes or cleaning.
  • Require clean clothing and footwear before entering pig areas. Contaminated shoes, clothing, equipment, and vehicles can carry pathogens between locations.
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces and shared equipment according to the product label and the farm’s veterinary protocol.

Disposable livestock boot covers can make a footwear barrier practical for short visits or designated entry points. They are not a substitute for removing visible dirt, following contact-time requirements for disinfectants, or changing contaminated protective gear.

Manage pigs, feed, pests, and waste as transmission routes

  • Source replacement pigs and semen from herds with verified health status.
  • Prevent contact between pigs and birds, wildlife, rodents, and flies.
  • Remove feed spills quickly; spilled feed can attract wildlife and pests.
  • Maintain documented rodent- and fly-control programs.
  • Keep carcass-disposal and manure-management procedures current and separate from clean traffic routes.

USDA APHIS guidance emphasizes that these controls must work together. A clean entry door does little if a shared vehicle, rodent, or manure route bypasses it.

2. Make feed, water, housing, and pest control consistent

Basic husbandry becomes a health intervention when it is dependable in every pen and on every shift. APHIS recommends properly fed pigs, fresh water, clean sleeping areas, vaccination, and feed handling that prevents contamination.

Protect feed from contamination

  • Deliver, store, mix, and feed rations in ways that prevent contamination.
  • Keep feed areas protected from birds, rodents, wildlife, and moisture.
  • Clean up spills promptly instead of allowing them to accumulate around barns, bins, or loading areas.
  • Document who checks feed condition and when corrective action is taken.

Make water availability and quality routine checks

Pigs need reliable access to fresh water. Build checks into the daily schedule so blocked drinkers, leaks, low flow, or dirty supply points are found before they affect a whole pen. Record problems and repairs rather than relying on informal handovers between workers.

Keep sleeping areas and housing clean and protective

Clean sleeping areas reduce exposure to contaminants and support normal rest. Housing should also prevent birds and other animals from contacting pigs. Cleaning procedures should account for the time needed to remove organic matter, apply disinfectant, and allow the area to dry where the farm protocol requires it.

Compare routines by reliability, not appearance

Decision area What to evaluate
Disease-risk reduction Whether the routine blocks contamination and limits spread between pens or groups
Consistency How reliably workers can perform it across every shift and entry point
Labor and infrastructure Cleaning time, water access, storage, drainage, pest barriers, and record-keeping needs
Welfare and production Effects on water access, feed intake, comfort, growth, and stress
Veterinary fit Compatibility with the veterinarian-approved herd-health plan

Choose the routine that workers can perform correctly every day, then verify it with records and periodic review. An elaborate procedure that is skipped is less protective than a simpler procedure that is followed.

3. Use veterinarian-guided vaccination, surveillance, and response

Vaccination, observation, and diagnostics should operate as one herd-health program. CDC advises pig caretakers to work with a veterinarian on herd-management and vaccination strategies that reduce influenza A spread among swine and help prevent spread between pigs, people, and birds.

Build a schedule for the actual herd

Set the product, dose, timing, storage, administration method, and booster schedule with the herd veterinarian. Keep records for each group, including product identity, lot information when available, date, dose, and administrator. Follow the product label and veterinary instructions rather than copying a schedule from another farm.

Understand what influenza vaccination can and cannot do

APHIS reports that commercially available or autogenous influenza vaccines can reduce clinical signs and virus shedding. Influenza viruses can change rapidly, however, and a vaccine may not fully protect against a modified strain. Vaccination therefore complements—not replaces—biosecurity and monitoring.

Monitor pigs and production data

  • Watch for coughing, sneezing, fever, breathing difficulty, unusual lethargy, poor appetite, diarrhea, increased deaths, or sudden changes in growth and feed or water use.
  • Track production changes by room, barn, age group, and date so an abnormal pattern is easier to identify.
  • Investigate unusual illness promptly with the veterinarian; diagnostic testing can guide treatment, isolation, and prevention decisions.
  • Update vaccination and management plans when disease risks, diagnostic findings, or circulating strains change.

Act quickly when disease is suspected

Separate affected groups where practical, limit movement of people and equipment, and notify the herd veterinarian. APHIS recommends immediate reporting of suspected disease signs to state or federal animal-health officials for testing and investigation. Follow their directions for sampling, movement controls, and follow-up.

How the three approaches fit together

Biosecurity blocks exposure, dependable husbandry reduces avoidable stress and contamination, and veterinary oversight detects problems and adjusts protection. The Swine Health Improvement Plan (SHIP) organizes standards for site biosecurity, feed biosafety, and live-haul sanitation; it can provide a framework for documenting and improving a site’s controls. USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service data cited by APHIS put the U.S. swine inventory at 76.8 million pigs in 2025, underscoring the scale at which consistent prevention matters.

Approach Primary purpose Typical failure if neglected
Daily biosecurity Prevent introduction and spread Pathogens enter through people, equipment, vehicles, pests, or incoming animals
Consistent husbandry Maintain nutrition, hydration, comfort, and clean surroundings Contamination, stress, or resource shortages weaken pigs and obscure early illness
Veterinary vaccination and surveillance Reduce disease impact and detect change early Delayed diagnosis, poorly matched protection, or uncontrolled spread

A practical daily checklist

  • Confirm controlled entry procedures are working and visitor and vehicle logs are complete.
  • Check clean clothing, footwear, and equipment before barn entry.
  • Inspect drinkers, feed, sleeping areas, ventilation, and barriers against birds and wildlife.
  • Remove feed spills and verify rodent and fly-control measures.
  • Review pig behavior, appetite, breathing, manure, deaths, and production records.
  • Record deviations, correct them promptly, and escalate unusual signs to the veterinarian.
