Large domestic cats come in several different shapes: some are long and muscular, others are tall and athletic, while a few look huge mainly because of a dense or semi-long coat. There is no official scientific ranking of the largest cat breeds, and adult weight varies with sex, frame, muscle, age, and genetics.
The breeds below are an editorial selection based on recognized breed size and commonly reported adult ranges. Use the figures as general guidance—not as feeding targets. A veterinarian should assess a cat’s ideal weight using body-condition and muscle-condition scores.
Quick comparison of large cat breeds
| Breed | Typical adult size | What makes it look large | Approximate maturity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maine Coon | Females 12–15 lb; males 18–22 lb | Long body, heavy bone, large feet, long tail | 3–5 years |
| Ragdoll | Females 10–15 lb; males 15–20 lb | Substantial frame and semi-long coat | About 4 years |
| Savannah | Medium-to-large; exceptionally tall and long-legged | Height, athletic build, long legs | Varies by generation |
| Turkish Van | Females 7–12 lb; males 10–20 lb | Muscular body and powerful legs | 3–5 years |
| RagaMuffin | About 10–20 lb | Large bone and plush semi-long coat | About 4 years |
| Norwegian Forest Cat | Females 8–12 lb; males 10–16 lb | Muscular frame and dense coat | Up to 5 years |
| Siberian | Often around 12–15 lb; larger individuals possible | Heavy bone, strong hindquarters, thick coat | Up to 5 years |
| American Bobtail | Females 7–11 lb; males 12–16 lb | Substantial bone and muscular body | Up to 3 years |
| British Shorthair | About 7–17 lb | Broad, compact body and dense coat | Slow to mature |
| Bengal | Females 6–12 lb; males 9–15 lb | Muscular, athletic build | About 2 years |
These ranges overlap, and the order should not be treated as a precise size ranking. A large male of one breed may weigh less than a smaller, heavily built female of another.
1. Maine Coon
The Maine Coon is usually the first breed people think of when discussing large domestic cats. TICA lists typical adult females at about 12–15 pounds and males at about 18–22 pounds.

- Stainless Steel Pet Bowl: Made for daily food or water use with a simple, practical design

- Wide, Stable Shape: Designed to sit steadily during everyday meals
- Easy to Clean: Smooth stainless steel surface rinses clean and is dishwasher safe
- Stackable Design: Bowls can be stacked for compact storage when not in use
Its size comes from more than body weight. Maine Coons have a long, rectangular, muscular body, substantial bone, large feet, and a long tail. Their coat and prominent ruff can also make them appear even bigger.
Maine Coons mature slowly and may continue developing until roughly 3–5 years old. That does not mean they should be overfed as kittens. A healthy Maine Coon should have appropriate muscle and body structure, not simply the highest possible number on a scale.
2. Ragdoll
Ragdolls are substantial, muscular, semi-longhaired cats. Adult females commonly weigh about 10–15 pounds, while males are often around 15–20 pounds.
They may not reach full size and weight until approximately four years old. Their relaxed, easygoing temperament is appealing, but it can also mean that some individuals do not get enough exercise. Daily interactive play—using wand toys, chase toys, or food puzzles—helps support a healthy body condition.
The breed’s soft coat and large frame can disguise gradual weight gain. Check the cat’s shape and feel for the ribs rather than judging size by appearance alone.
3. Savannah
The Savannah is one of the tallest domestic-cat types. It is better described as tall and long-legged than simply heavy: a lean Savannah may look enormous while weighing less than a stockier Maine Coon or Ragdoll. TICA classifies the breed as medium-to-large, and Guinness-recognized Savannahs have exceeded 19 inches in height.
Savannahs originated from domestic cats crossed with African servals, so different generations can retain different amounts of serval ancestry. TICA recognizes the Savannah as a domestic cat breed, but its hybrid origin matters when considering temperament, care, and ownership rules.
Ownership may be restricted or illegal in some U.S. states, local jurisdictions, and countries. Check the law for your exact address before buying or adopting one; a general statement that Savannahs are legal or illegal is not reliable everywhere.

4. Turkish Van
The Turkish Van is a powerful, athletic breed. TICA’s typical figures range from about 7–12 pounds for females and 10–20 pounds for males.
It has a substantial, muscular body and strong legs, with males generally appearing more imposing. Turkish Vans are active climbers and jumpers, and many show an unusual interest in water. A home for this breed should include secure high platforms, sturdy scratching equipment, and plenty of opportunities for play.
Turkish Vans can take three to five years to reach full maturity. Their activity level means that body weight should be considered alongside muscle and fitness rather than assessed from a scale alone.
5. RagaMuffin
RagaMuffins are large-boned cats with a plush semi-long coat. Commonly reported adult weights are around 10–20 pounds, although individual cats can fall outside that range.
The coat gives the breed additional visual bulk, while its substantial frame accounts for much of its actual size. RagaMuffins can take approximately four years to reach full-grown proportions, so a young cat may continue filling out well after it looks nearly adult.
Because the breed is both large and fluffy, regular hands-on checks are more useful than visual estimates. Feel gently for the ribs and ask a veterinarian to confirm whether the cat is maintaining a healthy body-condition score.
6. Norwegian Forest Cat
The Norwegian Forest Cat is a muscular, athletic climber with a long, dense coat. Purina lists typical adult males at about 10–16 pounds and females at about 8–12 pounds, although some males may exceed that range.
Its heavy coat adds considerable visual size, especially during the colder months. The breed may take up to five years to fully mature, making it another slow-developing large cat.

7. Siberian
Siberians are powerful, medium-to-large cats with strong hindquarters, heavy bone, and a thick seasonal triple coat. Mature cats are often reported at around 12–15 pounds, with larger individuals possible.
Their coat becomes fuller in winter and shorter and less dense in summer, so the same cat can look dramatically different over the course of a year. Siberians may take as long as five years to reach full maturity.
This is an active breed rather than a decorative oversized cat. Climbing space, daily play, and opportunities to move help a Siberian maintain muscle and avoid excess fat.
8. American Bobtail
The American Bobtail is a substantial, well-muscled cat. Typical adult females weigh about 7–11 pounds, while males commonly weigh about 12–16 pounds.
Its short tail is naturally variable in length, so it is not a measurement of the cat’s overall size. The breed’s large appearance comes from its bone structure and athletic body.
American Bobtails can take up to three years to reach full size. They benefit from sturdy furniture and play equipment that can handle a heavier, active cat. As with any breed, the goal is a fit body—not simply a heavier one.
9. British Shorthair
British Shorthairs are compact, broad, heavily boned cats. Commonly reported adult weights range from about 7–17 pounds, with males generally larger than females.

The breed’s dense coat and rounded body give it a teddy-bear appearance, but that shape can conceal excess fat. British Shorthairs are often less active than tall, athletic breeds, so measured portions and regular play are important.
Look for a waist behind the ribs and ribs that can be felt under a light fat covering. A round silhouette is part of the breed’s appearance; it is not proof that the cat is at a healthy weight.
10. Bengal
Bengals are generally lighter than Maine Coons and Ragdolls, but they belong on a broad list of large domestic breeds because they are medium-to-large, heavily muscled, and highly athletic. TICA gives typical adult ranges of about 6–12 pounds for females and 9–15 pounds for males.
Most Bengals reach full size by about two years old. Their athletic build, long lines, and distinctive coat pattern can make them appear larger than their scale weight suggests.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell whether a large cat is overweight
A breed chart cannot determine an individual cat’s ideal weight. Healthy weight depends on age, sex, muscle mass, activity, body frame, and medical history.
On the commonly used nine-point body-condition scale, a score of 5 is generally considered ideal. In a cat around that score:
- The ribs can be felt beneath a light covering of fat.
- A visible waist is present behind the ribs when viewed from above.
- The abdomen does not hang heavily when viewed from the side.
- Muscle is present over the back and hindquarters.
Dense coats can make a lean cat look overweight, while a broad or fluffy body can hide fat. Have a veterinarian assess the cat if you are unsure, particularly because obesity increases the risk of problems such as arthritis and diabetes. Do not put a cat on a rapid weight-loss plan without veterinary guidance.

What large cats need at home
Size affects equipment as well as food and veterinary costs. Before bringing home a large cat, check that its essentials are genuinely large and stable:
- Carrier: Choose one long and strong enough for the adult cat to turn around and lie down comfortably. A kitten-sized carrier may become unusable within months.
- Litter box: The cat should be able to enter, turn, dig, and squat without its body hanging over the edge. Large covered boxes can also be cramped for broad cats.
- Scratching posts: Select tall, heavy bases that will not tip when the cat stretches its full body weight against them.
- Cat trees and shelves: Platforms should be wide enough for the cat to rest on and firmly anchored, especially for athletic breeds such as the Turkish Van, Savannah, Siberian, and Bengal.
- Beds and resting places: Measure the cat rather than relying on a small-breed bed size. Large cats need room to curl up without spilling over the edges.
- Exercise: Schedule interactive play and provide climbing or puzzle-feeding opportunities. This is particularly important for relaxed cats that are prone to inactivity.
Breeds sometimes confused with this list
The Chausie is another large, athletic hybrid breed, but it is not always included in domestic-cat lists because of its jungle-cat ancestry and variable size. Domestic shorthairs and domestic longhairs can also grow very large, but they are non-standardized cat types rather than single pedigreed breeds.
Record-holding cats should not be used to describe an entire breed. A record individual may be unusually tall, unusually long, or overweight. Similarly, Savannahs and Bengals should be identified as domestic breeds with hybrid origins, not as breeds that developed solely from domestic-cat populations.
FAQ
What is the largest domestic cat breed?
The Maine Coon is commonly regarded as one of the largest domestic cat breeds by overall size and weight. TICA lists typical adult males at about 18–22 pounds and females at about 12–15 pounds, although individual cats vary.

Are large cat breeds harder to care for?
Not necessarily, but they need appropriately sized equipment, stable climbing furniture, larger carriers and litter boxes, and careful portion control. Some large breeds also mature slowly and need several years to reach full size.
Should I feed a large-breed cat more to help it grow?
No. Breed weight ranges are not feeding targets, and deliberately overfeeding a slow-maturing kitten can promote unhealthy fat gain. Follow veterinary or food-label guidance and monitor body condition.
Are Savannahs and Bengals domestic cats?
TICA recognizes both as domestic cat breeds, but both have hybrid origins. Savannahs descend from domestic cats and African servals, while Bengals originated through domestic-cat and Asian leopard-cat crosses. Ownership rules for Savannahs vary by location.
The Bottom Line
The Maine Coon, Ragdoll, RagaMuffin, Turkish Van, Norwegian Forest Cat, Siberian, American Bobtail, British Shorthair, Savannah, and Bengal all qualify as large or notably substantial domestic-cat breeds in different ways. The biggest-looking cat is not always the heaviest, and the heaviest cat is not necessarily the healthiest. Choose a breed for its temperament, activity level, care requirements, and legal status—not just its maximum reported weight.
