A Bluetooth-controlled robot fiddler crab called Wavy Dave lost its oversized claw after a real male crab attacked it on a Portuguese mudflat. The incident was dramatic, but the experiment’s real finding was more interesting: wild fiddler crabs adjusted their courtship and rivalry displays according to the apparent size and behavior of a competing male.
What happened to Wavy Dave?
Researchers placed Wavy Dave among wild Afruca tangeri fiddler crabs during the mating season in Portugal’s Ria Formosa Natural Park. The robot waved its enlarged claw like a male fiddler crab advertising for a mate or confronting a rival.
During one trial, a real male crab approached, attacked the model and pulled off its claw. The researchers abandoned that individual trial and rebooted the robot. Wavy Dave was damaged, but it was not eaten or permanently destroyed, and the documented damage was specifically the removal of its claw—not the robot being completely torn apart.
Headlines may say that the crabs discovered the robot’s “true nature.” That is entertaining shorthand, not what the experiment demonstrated. The evidence shows that the animals responded to an unusual, rival-like signal. It does not show that they understood they were looking at a machine.

Why build a robotic crab?
Male fiddler crabs have one greatly enlarged claw. They use it in waving displays associated with courtship and competition. Females assess these signals, while males also watch nearby competitors.
A live crab is difficult to use as a controlled experimental stimulus: its claw size, waving speed, duration and other movements vary naturally. Wavy Dave allowed the researchers to change selected features while keeping the rest of the presentation consistent.
The study therefore tested two broad aspects of a rival:
- Static appearance: how large the rival’s major claw appeared.
- Dynamic signaling: how quickly and for how long the rival waved.
The robot was a biomimetic research device, not an autonomous or fully functional replacement for a living crab. It reproduced particular visual and movement cues rather than every smell, texture, vibration and behavior that a real crab provides.

How Wavy Dave was made
The model was based on a 3D scan of a fiddler-crab specimen from a museum collection. Researchers 3D-printed its body and enlarged claw separately. The claw could be swapped between two approximate sizes:
- 5 centimeters: approximately the mean major-claw length in the researchers’ records.
- 7 centimeters: approximately the largest major-claw length in those records.
The claw’s movement was controlled through a Bluetooth-linked app. According to the University of Exeter’s account, the project began as an idea during the COVID-19 lockdown, when lead author Joe Wilde was learning about 3D printing and robotics.
The Portuguese field experiment
The fieldwork took place from May through July 2022 in Ria Formosa Natural Park on Portugal’s southeastern coast. The study area included tidal mudflats, salt marshes and sandy banks inhabited by wild Afruca tangeri crabs.
For each presentation, researchers positioned the robot about 30 centimeters from a real male’s burrow and recorded the interaction with two cameras. They varied the robot’s claw size and waving pattern, then measured how the real male behaved.

In particular, they recorded whether a male entered or remained in its burrow and how its own waving behavior changed. The paper was published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B on August 6, 2025, under the title “Biomimetic robots reveal flexible adjustment of sexual signalling in a wild invertebrate.”
What did the crabs actually do?
The formal results were about flexible social signaling, not simply aggression.
- Males were less likely to enter their burrows when the robot was waving, particularly when it had the smaller claw.
- When males did enter their burrows, they spent less time inside under some waving conditions.
- Males did not necessarily respond to rapid robotic waving by increasing their moment-to-moment wave rate.
- Instead, when the robotic rival waved quickly, males extended their own display bouts, producing more waving overall.
That combination suggests that the crabs were not responding to every robot in the same way. Their behavior changed according to both the rival’s apparent physical form and its display pattern.
Why might a large claw change a male’s response?
A larger major claw may signal that a rival is a more formidable competitor. A male could be less willing to challenge an opponent that appears more likely to win a contest or inflict damage.

That is an interpretation of the behavioral pattern, not proof that the crabs consciously calculated contest odds in a human-like way. Animal behavior can be flexible and highly responsive without requiring the animals to reason about a situation as people do.

There is no evidence in the study that the crabs conceptually recognized a “robot.” The model may have looked convincing in some respects while also producing cues that differed from a live crab. A real crab can detect more than a printed body and moving claw, including odors, surface texture, vibration and natural three-dimensional movement.
The University of Exeter account reports an observation from Joe Wilde that females appeared to notice something unusual about Wavy Dave, after which some males attempted to fight it. That is a colorful field observation, but it should not be treated as a formal demonstration that females identified the model as artificial.
The safer conclusion is that Wavy Dave generated a socially meaningful but imperfect signal. Some crabs treated that signal as relevant enough to alter their behavior—and, in one case, to attack the model.

Why the damaged robot mattered
The claw-ripping incident was not the experiment’s main statistical result. It was an anecdote within a larger field study. It may have reflected territorial or competitive behavior, but one attack cannot establish that fiddler crabs routinely destroy robotic intruders or that the crab was motivated by a particular understanding of the device.
Even so, the incident illustrates the value and difficulty of biomimetic field robotics. A model designed to present a controlled signal must still operate in an environment where real animals can approach, challenge and physically interfere with it.
More broadly, the study shows why a robot can be useful even when it is not a perfect imitation. By changing claw size and waving behavior separately, researchers could ask which features influenced male responses. That kind of control is much harder to achieve with naturally occurring interactions between live crabs.
The larger lesson
Wavy Dave failed mechanically in one encounter but succeeded scientifically. Its removable claw was a practical vulnerability; its ability to provoke a real response showed that the signal mattered.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe research does not prove that fiddler crabs “outsmarted” scientists or discovered a machine’s identity. It provides more precise evidence: wild males of one species and one Portuguese population flexibly adjusted burrow use and sexual signaling when confronted with rivals that differed in apparent claw size and waving behavior.
In other words, the funny story is about a robot losing a claw. The scientific story is about how a simple, controlled imitation revealed sophisticated context-dependent behavior in an invertebrate.
