Reports place the encounter around 2003 in India’s Ranthambore National Park and describe a struggle lasting about 90 minutes, although the exact chronology and completeness of the circulating footage are not independently established.
Who was Machli?
Machli was the identity commonly used for T-16, a Bengal tigress in Rajasthan’s Ranthambore National Park. She was also called the “Lady of the Lakes” and the “Crocodile Killer.” Her territory reportedly covered about 350 square miles, according to National Geographic.
She became one of India’s best-known wild tigers because visitors and filmmakers repeatedly saw her raising cubs, defending territory and hunting around Ranthambore’s lakes. The BBC’s Natural World described her as “the true queen of the lakes.”
What does the crocodile video show?
Accounts describe Machli first moving her cubs away from danger, then returning to confront an approximately 14-foot (4.3-meter) Indian mugger crocodile. The footage shows the tigress attacking and ultimately killing the crocodile. The BBC transcript characterizes it as “this incredible footage” of her killing a fully grown crocodile.

Because the video circulated in edited television and online versions, it should not automatically be treated as a continuous, uncut record of every moment. The strongest consistent conclusion is that Machli was filmed overpowering a very large mugger crocodile in Ranthambore.
How long did the fight last?
The Indian Express and other reports put the struggle at roughly an hour and a half, or about 90 minutes. That duration is a reported account rather than a precisely timed measurement from a complete recording, so it is best stated as “about 90 minutes.”

What did the fight cost her?
Several accounts say Machli lost or damaged canine teeth during the encounter. Those same reports should be read cautiously: the public evidence supports the story of a serious fight, but not a detailed veterinary record documenting every injury.
Where was the video filmed?
The encounter is associated with Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, northwestern India. Ranthambore’s lakes and marshy edges provide habitat for both Bengal tigers and mugger crocodiles, making an encounter between the two species possible. No more specific filming location within the park is consistently identified in the available reports.

What happened to Machli afterward?
Machli continued to live and raise cubs after the crocodile fight. National Geographic reported that she later coped with the loss of canine teeth and the use of one eye. She died in August 2016 at approximately 19 years old; a Ranthambore reference records her death on 18 August 2016.
Her final years and legacy
Machli’s descendants became part of Ranthambore’s modern tiger story. Forest-department figures quoted by Scroll in 2015 counted 61 tigers in the reserve, with nearly 30 described as her descendants. Those numbers belong to that historical report, not to a current census.

Her fame also had an economic effect. A TOFT award citation summarized by Scroll credited her with helping generate nearly $10 million a year in local economic activity for a decade. That is a historical estimate tied to the citation’s period, not a current tourism figure. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said Machli “gave visitors stories to remember.”

Machli’s popularity brought visitors, filmmakers and international attention to Ranthambore. That visibility helped turn one tiger’s life into a public conservation narrative: protecting habitat and prey can support both a breeding tiger population and the communities that depend on wildlife tourism.

India’s national tiger estimates were also rising during the period summarized by Scroll: 1,411 tigers in 2006, 1,700 in 2010 and 2,666 in 2014. These are historical, source-dated estimates and should not be confused with today’s national count.
