The shark most likely ate the tagged great white was another, substantially larger great white. Investigators inferred that from the missing shark’s tracking tag: it recorded a deep dive, then a sudden rise in temperature consistent with the inside of a large, warm-bodied shark. No one witnessed the attack, so the identity is not proven.
What did the tracking tag record?
Researchers tagged a healthy great white about three metres long—roughly nine feet—off southwestern Australia. Over about four months, it traveled roughly 4,000 kilometres, according to the PBS documentary page for The Search for the Ocean’s Super Predator, accessed in 2026.
The tag then recorded a rapid descent to 580 metres. Within seconds, its temperature reading shifted from 8°C, the surrounding seawater temperature, to 26°C. It remained near 26°C for eight days as it moved between the surface and depths of about 100 metres. The tag eventually detached, floated to the surface, and washed ashore. These are measurements reported in the documentary, not an independently published identification of the predator.
Why do investigators think another great white ate it?
The temperature change suggested that the tag had entered a large animal. Investigators compared that reading with thermal imaging of other great whites, whose body temperatures they measured at roughly 26–27°C. The documentary’s team said the temperature and movement profile fit a great white shark.

The documentary describes the event as a super-predator attack. Gizmodo reports that investigators estimated the suspected shark at about 16 feet and more than two tons, and compared the tag’s speed, trajectory, and temperature data with larger migrating white sharks: Gizmodo’s account. Those size figures are the documentary’s estimate, not a measurement of a recovered attacker.
How certain is the cannibal-shark explanation?
It is the best-supported explanation in the cited accounts, but it remains an inference. The attack was not observed, and the tag data did not identify a predator beyond doubt. National Geographic likewise frames the episode as evidence or speculation about cannibalism rather than a confirmed sighting: National Geographic’s account.

The tag’s warm interval and the comparison with great-white body temperatures support the larger-white-shark theory. However, no physical evidence in these accounts—such as an observed attack or a recovered carcass bearing identifying evidence—establishes exactly what swallowed the tag. A killer whale, giant squid, or unknown sea creature is not confirmed by the cited record.
