What Do Fish Farmers Feed Their Fish?

Most farmed fish eat formulated pellets designed for their species and life stage. Learn what those diets contain, how fishmeal and alternatives fit in, and how pond systems use natural food.

Fish farmers primarily feed formulated diets, usually dried pellets engineered for the species and life stage being raised. These feeds combine nutrients from ingredients such as plant proteins and oils, fishmeal and fish oil, animal trimmings, vitamins, and minerals. In pond systems, farmers may also encourage natural food and provide supplementary feed.

What is in commercial fish feed?

A complete aquaculture diet is formulated to meet a fish’s nutritional requirements rather than relying on one ingredient. NOAA Fisheries says nutritionists account for about 40 essential nutrients, including amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and fats. FAO descriptions also include proteins, fatty acids, carbohydrates, energy, and water.

Commercial feed is commonly sold as a dried pellet, which NOAA Fisheries compares in form to dry dog food. Pellet size, density, and whether it floats or sinks are selected for the fish and the feeding environment.

Typical ingredient groups

  • Proteins and amino acids: supplied by combinations of fishmeal, plant meals such as soy or corn, and animal-processing ingredients.
  • Oils and fatty acids: provided by fish oil and vegetable oils, among other sources.
  • Micronutrients: vitamins and minerals added to complete the formula.
  • Energy sources and binders: carbohydrates and other ingredients that help pellets hold together and provide usable energy.

The exact recipe is not universal. A single raw ingredient rarely supplies every nutrient in the right proportions.

Do all farmed fish eat the same thing?

No. Species, feeding habits, body size, life stage, water temperature, and the production system all affect feed choice. A diet suitable for one fish cannot automatically be substituted for another.

Fish or production characteristic How feed may differ
Herbivorous fish May use more plant proteins, such as soy or corn, along with vegetable oils, vitamins, and minerals.
Carnivorous fish May combine fish-derived proteins and oils with plant proteins, vitamins, and minerals.
Different life stages Require pellets and nutrient concentrations appropriate to their size and development; a juvenile formula is not automatically an adult formula.
Different feeding behaviors May need floating, slow-sinking, or sinking pellets so fish can consume feed efficiently.

These are broad formulation patterns, not recipes for every species or farm. Nutritional adequacy depends on the complete diet, not on whether a feed is labeled plant-based or contains a particular ingredient.

What role do fishmeal and fish oil play?

Fishmeal and fish oil are traditional aquafeed ingredients. They can provide concentrated protein, essential amino acids, and fatty acids such as EPA and DHA. They are often made from small pelagic fish or from material recovered during seafood processing.

They are not mandatory ingredients in every diet. NOAA Fisheries states that fish and shrimp do not require fishmeal or fish oil specifically when the finished feed supplies the nutrients they need through other ingredients.

API BOTTOM FEEDER PELLETS WITH SQUID Fish Food 7.9-Ounce Container
  • Contains one (1) API BOTTOM FEEDER PELLETS WITH SQUID Fish Food 7.9-Ounce Container
  • Includes optimal protein sources to support healthy fish and ideal growth
  • Contains squid pellet, mussel, and seaweed for improved nutrition and great taste
  • Formulated for easy digestion, leading to less toxic ammonia and cleaner, clearer water
  • Feed as much as fish can consume in 30 minutes as bottom feeders have slower feeding habits

A historical salmon example

NOAA Fisheries reported that fishmeal made up an estimated 70% of salmon diets in the 1980s and about 25% in 2017. That is a historical estimate for salmon diets, not a current percentage and not a figure that applies to all farmed fish.

Which alternatives are used?

Feed research and commercial formulation increasingly examine ways to reduce dependence on wild marine resources while preserving nutritional value. Alternatives can include plant proteins and oils, animal by-products, and other ingredients selected to supply the required amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.

The presence of an alternative ingredient does not by itself prove that a feed is nutritionally complete. The relevant question is whether the entire formulation meets the requirements of the species and life stage. Ingredients used by a particular producer can change, so current claims require producer-specific information.

How farming systems change feeding

Intensive systems

Intensive farms generally rely on complete prepared diets as the principal source of nutrition. Because fish density is high, feed must deliver predictable nutrients and be managed to limit uneaten pellets.

Semi-intensive ponds

Semi-intensive ponds may support natural food, such as plankton and other organisms, through fertilization or composting. Farmers then add supplementary feed. The supplementary diet does not necessarily provide the whole nutritional intake by itself, because naturally available food contributes to the pond’s production.

Why “supplementary” and “complete” are different

  • Complete feed: formulated to provide the nutritional balance when offered as the planned diet.
  • Supplementary feed: added alongside natural pond food and therefore not necessarily designed to supply every requirement alone.

Why feed management matters

Uneaten feed is both an economic loss and an environmental concern. Pellets that are not consumed can add organic material to sediments beneath farm sites and affect water quality. Farmers therefore match feed form and quantity to the fish, observe feeding response, and adjust management rather than treating a feed label as a universal schedule.

There is no responsible one-size-fits-all feeding rate: the appropriate amount depends on species, fish size, water temperature, health, stocking density, and system design. Commercial operators use the feed manufacturer’s species-specific guidance together with farm observations and professional advice.

How to evaluate a feed for a farm or pond

  1. Identify the fish and life stage. Confirm that the product is intended for the species and size being raised.
  2. Determine whether it is complete or supplementary. In a fertilized pond, a supplementary diet may be appropriate; an intensive system usually requires a complete diet.
  3. Check the nutrient statement. Compare protein, lipid, amino-acid, vitamin, and mineral information with the species’ requirements rather than focusing on one headline ingredient.
  4. Match pellet form to feeding behavior. Select a size and buoyancy that fish can consume before pellets disperse or settle.
  5. Review ingredient information and sourcing claims. Fishmeal, fish oil, plant ingredients, and animal by-products can all appear in valid formulations; the finished nutrient balance is what determines suitability.
  6. Monitor consumption and water conditions. Persistent leftovers, poor growth, or deteriorating water quality indicate that feeding management or the diet needs professional review.

What should a home pond owner take from this?

Retail pond pellets are not automatically suitable for every fish or commercial operation. Choose feed by species, life stage, pellet form, and whether the pond supplies natural food. Do not substitute feed intended for one fish simply because the ingredients look similar.
