A betta fish needs a cycled freshwater aquarium with stable warm water, gentle filtration, a secure lid, hiding places, conditioned tap water and a reliable way to test water quality. PetMD cites 2.5 gallons as a minimum and 5–10 gallons as an easier-to-stabilize range. Set up and cycle the aquarium before bringing the fish home.
Choose the right aquarium
Use an aquarium of at least 2.5 gallons. A 5–10 gallon tank gives more swimming room and a larger volume that changes temperature and water chemistry more slowly, making routine care more forgiving. Choose the larger size if you may add compatible tank mates.
| Setup | What it offers | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5 gallons | Meets PetMD’s cited minimum, but the smaller volume is less stable and leaves less room for equipment and décor. | A single betta with careful monitoring. |
| 5–10 gallons | More stable water conditions, greater swimming space and more flexibility for décor or carefully selected community inhabitants. | Most first-time keepers and any plan involving tank mates. |
Fit the aquarium with a secure lid. Bettas can jump, but the lid must still leave access to air at the water surface because bettas regularly breathe there.
Install heat and gentle filtration
Heater and thermometer
Keep the water in a stable tropical range. PetMD lists 76–81°F, while Aqueon lists 76–85°F. Because many homes are cooler than this, an in-tank heater is normally required; do not rely on room temperature. Use a thermometer to verify the actual water temperature and check it regularly.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
Filter with low flow
Filtration supports biological water quality, but bettas can be stressed by strong currents. Select a filter with gentle flow or baffle the outlet so the fish can swim comfortably and reach the surface without being pushed around. A filter does not eliminate the need for partial water changes or equipment cleaning.
Prepare safe, cycled water
- Place the aquarium and equipment. Add the substrate, décor, heater, thermometer and filter, leaving clear swimming space and an unobstructed route to the surface.
- Fill with tap water treated with conditioner. Use a conditioner that handles chlorine and chloramines before the water enters the aquarium.
- Start the filter and heater. Confirm that the heater maintains the target temperature and that the filter runs without creating excessive current.
- Cycle the aquarium before adding the fish. Cycling establishes beneficial bacteria that process fish waste. CDC guidance recommends completing this preparation before the fish arrives.
- Test the water. Keep a suitable aquarium test kit and monitor water quality during setup and maintenance rather than judging safety by appearance alone.
Add furnishings that reduce stress
Provide smooth hiding places, plants or other cover. Inspect every ornament and plant for sharp edges or rough points that could tear fins. Leave enough open area for swimming and ensure furnishings cannot block the betta from reaching the surface.

Feed a betta-appropriate diet
Bettas are carnivorous. Use a high-protein food formulated for bettas, with pellets small enough for the individual fish to eat comfortably. Feed conservatively and remove uneaten food promptly; leftovers decompose and can foul the water. Adjust the amount to what the fish actually consumes rather than treating the container’s general directions as a guarantee.
Decide whether the betta will live alone
Safest default: one betta
A single-betta aquarium is the simplest arrangement. Never house two male bettas together; they may fight.

Community tanks require conditions
Some peaceful small fish, snails or shrimp may work in a sufficiently large, well-filtered aquarium, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Temperament varies between individual bettas. Add companions only when the tank provides the extra space and filtration they require, and separate animals immediately if chasing, fin damage or other aggression appears.
Maintain the aquarium and monitor health
- Check the temperature and confirm that the heater and filter are operating normally.
- Test water quality as part of routine care and whenever the fish behaves unusually.
- Plan partial water changes with conditioned water matched to the aquarium’s temperature.
- Clean and maintain equipment on a schedule appropriate to the aquarium and its biological load, as CDC recommends.
- Watch for loss of appetite, lethargy, abnormal swimming, increasingly frayed fins, spots or growths. These signs warrant advice from a qualified fish expert; temperature and water-quality problems are common stressors.
Before bringing the fish home
- At least a 2.5-gallon aquarium; 5–10 gallons is more stable.
- Secure lid with unobstructed surface access.
- Heater sized for the aquarium and a thermometer.
- Gentle-flow filter.
- Water conditioner for chlorine and chloramines.
- Substrate and smooth décor or plants for cover.
- Water-test kit.
- High-protein betta food.
- A completed aquarium cycle and verified temperature before introduction.
How long do bettas live?
PetMD gives a typical lifespan of 3–5 years with proper care. Adult bettas are commonly about 2.5–3 inches long, so plan the aquarium around their welfare and swimming needs rather than their small body size.
