A black spot by itself does not identify one fish. A Florida bluefin killifish can have a black stripe that ends in a spot, while a terminal-phase clown wrasse can have a black spot on its side. Those are unrelated fish from different habitats. To narrow the identification, note the water type and location, the spot’s exact position, the fish’s size and body pattern, and its life stage.
Fish that may match a black spot
These are useful possibilities, not a complete list. The same phrase can describe a mark on the flank, belly, fin base or fin itself.
Bluefin killifish: a Florida freshwater match
Florida’s freshwater angler guidance describes the bluefin killifish as a brown-backed minnow with a bold black stripe running along the side and ending in a black spot. Breeding-season males may show blue fins, but that color is not expected on every individual. A divided dorsal fin helps distinguish it from young bass, which can otherwise look similar.
Mosquitofish: the spot is usually on the belly
Florida mosquitofish provide a common source of confusion. The documented spot clue is a distinct black spot on the female’s belly, not a single flank spot. Melanistic fish may have scattered spots over the body or appear entirely black. Otherwise, mosquitofish are often plain, with broken vertical stripes on the tail.

Clown wrasse: a reef fish whose pattern changes
In the SharkCam reef-fish guide, terminal-phase clown wrasses are described with a black spot on the side in two color variations. Initial-phase fish lack that spot. Because the pattern changes as the fish matures and similar small wrasses can resemble one another in silhouette, the life stage and surrounding colors matter.
Spanish mackerel: check the dorsal fin
North Carolina’s marine identification guide places the black spot on the first dorsal fin of Spanish mackerel, rather than on the flank. Gold spots on the body can add to the confusion, especially when viewed briefly. The lateral line of Spanish mackerel gently curves toward the tail; comparing that curve with a king mackerel is more useful than relying on the dark mark alone.

Creek chub: several marks around the fins
South Nation Conservation describes creek chub with a side stripe and black spots at the base of the dorsal fin and at the base of the caudal (tail) fin. This regional freshwater fish is associated with small clear streams and the shores of small lakes. If the apparent “side spot” is close to a fin base, this pattern is worth considering.
How to narrow the identification
- Record the setting. Write down the country or region, the waterbody if known, and whether the water was fresh, brackish or salt.
- Pinpoint the mark. Decide whether it is on the flank, belly, tail base, dorsal-fin base, caudal-fin base or the fin itself. Note whether there is one spot, a stripe ending in a spot, or several spots.
- Describe the whole pattern. Include the back color, any side stripe, tail bars, body spots, fin colors and whether the fish is mostly dark or melanistic.
- Estimate size and shape. Give an approximate length and say whether the fish is slender like a minnow or wrasse, or more streamlined like a mackerel.
- Consider life stage. Some diagnostic marks appear only in particular phases. Bluefin killifish males show blue fins during breeding season, and terminal-phase clown wrasses have a side spot that initial-phase fish lack.
- Use a clear image. A side-view photograph in focus, with the fins visible and a familiar object for scale, is far more useful than a distant or top-down image.
Quick comparison
| Candidate | Where this clue applies | Dark-mark clue | Other features to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluefin killifish | Florida freshwater | Black side stripe ending in a black spot | Brown back; breeding males may have blue fins; divided dorsal fin |
| Mosquitofish | Florida freshwater | Female’s distinct spot is on the belly; melanistic forms may have multiple spots | Plain body and broken vertical tail stripes are common |
| Clown wrasse | SharkCam reef-fish context | Terminal phase has a black side spot; initial phase does not | Small, slender wrasse with maturation-related color variation |
| Spanish mackerel | North Carolina coastal guide | Black spot on the first dorsal fin, not the flank | Gold body spots and a lateral line that gently curves toward the tail |
| Creek chub | Regional freshwater streams and small lakes | Spots at the dorsal- and caudal-fin bases plus a side stripe | Clear-stream or small-lake-shore habitat |
Why a single black spot is not enough
Dark markings can occur in different anatomical positions, and a fish’s pattern may change with sex, maturity or color phase. A spot beside a fin is not the same diagnostic feature as a spot on the flank or belly. Regional guides also describe only the populations and settings they cover, so a Florida freshwater clue should not be treated as a worldwide identification key.

What information to provide for a reliable ID
- Where you saw the fish, including country, state or province and waterbody
- Freshwater or saltwater
- Approximate length
- Exact spot location: body, belly, tail base, fin base or fin
- Whether the mark is a single spot, a stripe ending in a spot, or multiple spots
- Body shape, base color, stripes and fin colors
- A sharp, well-lit side-view photograph
With those details, the candidates can be narrowed without assuming that every fish with a dark mark is the same species.
