Marine collagen is usually made from fish skin and scales, but there is no single standard fish species. Ingredients and products may use cod, tilapia, salmon, tuna, white fish or other species. Ingredient descriptions also include bones and fins. The only reliable way to identify a particular product’s source is to check its label or the manufacturer’s sourcing statement.

Which fish can marine collagen come from?

“Marine collagen” describes collagen sourced from marine animals, most commonly fish. It does not name one species or guarantee one raw material. Commercial ingredient sources include:

  • Cod
  • Tilapia
  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • White fish, a broad label that may cover more than one species

This is not an exhaustive list. The species can vary by supplier, region, harvest method and product batch.

Which part of the fish is used?

Skin and scales

Fish skin and scales are the most frequently described raw materials. Meiji says its Amino Collagen powder uses fish scales and skin after calcium is removed, then converts the extracted collagen into fish collagen peptides.

Bones and fins

Marine-collagen reviews and ingredient descriptions report using fish bones and fins. A product made from skin is therefore not interchangeable with every marine-collagen ingredient, even when both use the same broad category name.

Examples of product-specific sourcing

Product or ingredient Stated fish source What the statement means
Meiji Amino Collagen Fish scales and skin Meiji’s statement applies to this product, not to marine collagen generally.
Wild-Caught Marine Collagen Peptides Unflavored Wild-caught white fish in North America The NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database record reflects a label entered on May 21, 2025; it is a label snapshot, not a guarantee that the formulation is unchanged.
ThalaCol Wild-caught tuna skin Thala Ingredients describes the skin as a fish-processing co-product.
Nutrafol Marine Collagen Peptides Wild-caught fish skin Nutrafol’s support statement, updated April 24, 2026, does not identify a species in the described passage.
Naticol Fish skin; supplier range includes farmed and wild fish Weishardt describes its range as using non-endangered species and notes that some options may carry Friend of the Sea certification. These are supplier statements about the range.

Why fish skin and scales are common

Fish-processing tissues can be recovered instead of discarded. The Marine Stewardship Council describes marine collagen as being made from fish by-products such as skin that might otherwise go to waste. That supports an upcycling claim for a product when its source is documented; it is not proof that every marine-collagen supplement has the same environmental performance.

How to check a marine-collagen product’s source

  1. Look for the species. A label may name tuna, cod, tilapia, salmon or white fish. If it only says “marine fish,” the exact species is not established by that wording.
  2. Check the tissue. Look for skin, scales, bones or fins, and note whether the collagen is described as a peptide or hydrolysate.
  3. Review origin and production method. Wild-caught or farmed status, fishing area, catch method, vessel registration and aquaculture location can all affect traceability.
  4. Assess certification carefully. “Sustainably sourced” is a company claim unless the product identifies an independent certification and explains what the certification covers.
  5. Ask the manufacturer when details are missing. Request the species, raw-material origin and current formulation rather than assuming that “marine” identifies them.

What this means for pet owners

If a pet supplement lists marine collagen, the term alone does not reveal which fish was used. Check the package and manufacturer information for species, tissue and sourcing details, and ask your veterinarian about suitability for your individual animal—especially if the product does not identify its fish source or your pet has a known food sensitivity.

Does one fish make better collagen?

The available sourcing evidence does not establish that one fish species or tissue produces superior health outcomes in supplements. A manufacturer-reported eight-week study of one tuna-skin ingredient involved 72 women aged 40–60 taking 5 grams per day; that product-specific study cannot be used to rank all marine-collagen sources or to predict effects in pets.
