What Freshwater Fish Clean Tanks? Choosing Algae Grazers and Scavengers

Otocinclus and some plecos graze soft algae, while Corydoras and loaches target leftover food and debris. Learn the space, diet, water-quality and compatibility requirements before adding any so-called cleanup fish.

No freshwater fish cleans an aquarium by itself. Some species graze soft algae or biofilm, while others eat uneaten food and dead plant material. They still need appropriate food, stable water, compatible tank mates, enough adult-size space, and your normal testing, filtration, algae control, and water changes.

Choose the fish for the problem you actually have

“Cleaner fish” is an informal label, not a maintenance solution. Algae grazers and bottom scavengers perform different jobs, and adding either group increases the aquarium’s bioload.

Species or group What it mainly contributes Important limits
Otocinclus Grazes soft algae and biofilm Needs a mature, clean, highly oxygenated aquarium; keep in groups and provide supplemental food.
Bristlenose plecostomus Grazes algae, food crumbs, and driftwood Adults reach about 4–5 inches; Aquarium Co-Op recommends a tank of 25 gallons or larger. Feed a complete diet.
Clown plecostomus Algae grazing Confirm the exact species, adult size, and tank requirement before buying; “pleco” names are not interchangeable.
Corydoras catfish Uneaten food and bottom debris They are not an algae cure. Feed intentionally and provide suitable substrate and compatible companions.
Loaches Uneaten food and organic debris Size and behavior differ greatly by species, so select for the particular aquarium rather than the generic label.
Garra Algae grazing in suitable freshwater setups Different Garra species have different adult sizes, temperaments, and water requirements.

Best algae grazers

Otocinclus: small specialists for established tanks

Otocinclus are small, group-living grazers suited to soft algae and biofilm. Fluval says they “thrive in clean, mature tanks, and prefer to be kept in groups.” OATA likewise cautions that they can be delicate and need clean, highly oxygenated water.

A tank that is merely full of visible algae is not necessarily a safe Otocinclus tank. They are vulnerable when water quality, oxygenation, transport, or food availability is poor. Fluval recommends supplementing their grazing with algae wafers and blanched vegetables rather than relying only on algae growing in the aquarium.

#1 Best Overall
Aquaticheavens Siamese Algae Eater Live Fish (8 Fish Pack) Live Fish for Aquarium
  • ✅ The Siamese Algae Eater is one of the best algae-eating fish in the aquarium hobby, and it is one of the very few fish that will eat the dreaded black beard algae
  • ✅ The Siamese Algae Eater (Crossocheilus siamensis) is a longtime favorite in the aquarium hobby due to its active nature and its voracious appetite for various types of nuisance algae, including pesky black beard algae
  • ✅ It is a mostly herviborous fish that is gregarious as a juvenile, but is shoaling (rather than schooling) as an adult
  • ✅ As it matures, a distinct hierarchy develops within a group of this species, and stress and aggression are likely when the group contains less than 6 specimens
  • ✅ Care is simple for the Siamese Algae Eater. It is tolerant of a wide range of water parameters, but it will thrive in an aquarium with ample filtration and moderate to high water flow. This active fish is known to jump occasionally, so a secure aquarium lid is recommended

Bristlenose plecostomus: a larger, versatile grazer

Bristlenose plecos graze algae and driftwood and may pick up food crumbs. Aquarium Co-Op describes peaceful adults at approximately 4–5 inches and recommends an aquarium of at least about 25 gallons. Those figures are guidance from that source, not a universal rule for every setup; footprint, filtration, décor, tank mates, and the individual fish also matter.

They must still be fed deliberately. Expecting a bristlenose to live on whatever remains after other fish eat can lead to malnutrition, while excess food can worsen water quality.

Clown plecos and Garra: verify the species first

Clown plecos can graze algae, but a store label such as “pleco” does not establish the fish’s adult size or care requirements. Confirm the scientific or full common name before purchase. Garra is also a genus rather than one uniform care profile; check the exact species’ adult size, temperament, water conditions, oxygenation, and diet.

Fish that scavenge food and bottom debris

Corydoras catfish

Corydoras are bottom feeders that can consume uneaten food and some dead plant debris. They do not solve green-algae growth on glass, décor, or leaves. Aquarium Co-Op recommends feeding Corydoras intentionally instead of treating leftovers as their planned diet. Use a substrate that will not injure their barbels and choose tank mates that do not outcompete them for food.

Loaches

Some loaches consume uneaten food and organic debris, but “loach” covers species with very different adult sizes and behaviors. A suitable choice depends on the specific species and aquarium, not on the cleanup reputation attached to the label. Check adult dimensions, social needs, activity level, water parameters, and compatibility before stocking.

Why a cleanup fish cannot replace maintenance

Algae is fueled by conditions in the aquarium, including available light and nutrients. A grazer may remove some growth without correcting its cause. Scavenging fish may eat food that would otherwise remain visible, but the waste still becomes part of the system.

OATA warns that overfeeding leaves uneaten food that breaks down and releases toxic waste. Adding fish to consume that excess is an unreliable cycle: the new animals produce waste of their own and require space, oxygen, filtration, and food.

  • Test water on an appropriate schedule and respond to abnormal results.
  • Perform routine partial water changes and gravel or substrate cleaning as appropriate for the aquarium.
  • Control lighting and remove algae manually when growth exceeds what the fish can graze.
  • Feed measured portions and remove food that remains uneaten.
  • Maintain effective filtration, surface movement, and oxygenation, especially for Otocinclus.

How to select a species safely

  1. Identify the job. Choose an algae grazer for soft algae or biofilm; choose a bottom feeder only when the need is uneaten food or debris.
  2. Plan for adult size. Use the fish’s expected adult dimensions, not the juvenile size in the store. For bristlenose plecos, Aquarium Co-Op’s cited guidance is about 4–5 inches and 25 gallons or larger.
  3. Check water and oxygenation. Otocinclus require clean, highly oxygenated, mature conditions. Apply the exact species’ requirements to plecos, loaches, and Garra rather than assuming all “cleaner” fish are alike.
  4. Budget for food. Keep algae wafers and suitable vegetables available for Otocinclus when natural growth is insufficient, and provide species-appropriate foods to every bottom feeder.
  5. Check social and compatibility needs. Otocinclus prefer groups, while other species may have different social requirements or territorial behavior. Confirm tank-mate compatibility before purchase.
  6. Account for bioload. Make sure filtration, swimming space, oxygenation, and maintenance capacity can support the additional fish.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a common pleco for a small aquarium: the word “pleco” does not identify a single size or care profile.
  • Adding Otocinclus to a new tank: immature systems may lack stable conditions and dependable natural food.
  • Assuming scavengers need no food: Corydoras, plecos, and loaches should be fed intentionally.
  • Using fish to hide overfeeding: uneaten food still contributes to waste, and extra fish add more waste.
  • Skipping algae-source control: grazing alone will not correct excessive light, nutrients, or infrequent maintenance.
