A brackish-water fish is adapted to water that is saltier than freshwater but less salty than seawater. The classic habitat is an estuary, where river water mixes with ocean water. “Brackish fish” describes an ecological way of life, not a single taxonomic family.
What “brackish” means
Estuarine brackish water is a mixture of fresh water draining from land and salty seawater. Its salinity is variable rather than fixed: tides, rainfall, river discharge and weather can all change the water’s chemistry. Estuaries are highly productive feeding and nursery habitats for fish and other wildlife.

Published boundaries differ because agencies use different settings and measurement conventions:
| Reference point | Figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| NOAA Ocean Service estuary tutorial | 0.5–35 parts per thousand (ppt) | A broad estuarine brackish range. |
| NOAA Office for Coastal Management glossary | 0.5–32 ppt | Another commonly used oceanographic convention. |
| U.S. Geological Survey groundwater guidance (2021) | 1,000–10,000 mg/L dissolved solids | A commonly used brackish range for groundwater, measured as dissolved solids rather than ppt. |
| U.S. Geological Survey seawater comparison (2021) | About 35,000 mg/L dissolved solids | An approximate seawater reference in the same measurement system. |
These figures are not competing aquarium rules. They describe different environments and measurement approaches. For a tank, the correct target is the range specified for the particular species.

Are brackish fish freshwater or saltwater fish?
Neither label is quite right. Brackish species are adapted to an intermediate and often changing salinity. Some spend their lives in estuaries; others move between fresh, brackish and marine water during different life stages. Fish respond to salinity through changes in behavior, physiology, growth, reproduction and feeding.
A fish that tolerates a little salt is not automatically a brackish specialist. Aquarium sellers may market some genuinely brackish fish as freshwater fish, and long-term freshwater conditions can be unsuitable for them. Conversely, a species that naturally enters estuaries may still require mostly fresh water or a carefully controlled transition. Species-specific care information matters more than the word “brackish” on a label.

Where brackish-water fish live
Estuaries
Estuaries form where rivers meet the sea. Salinity can be higher near an ocean inlet, lower after rain or heavy river flow, and different again between the surface and bottom. This moving chemical gradient creates many niches within one estuary.
Other transitional waters
Brackish conditions also occur in tidal creeks, lagoons and some coastal lakes and groundwater systems. The defining feature is intermediate salinity, not a particular continent, climate or fish family.

How fish cope with changing salinity
Salinity changes the balance of water and dissolved ions around a fish’s body. Species adapted to fluctuating conditions regulate that balance and adjust their energy use. A 2024 review reports salinity-related effects on metabolism, nutrition, reproduction and growth, while emphasizing that tolerance is species-specific.
- Behavior: Fish may move toward fresher or saltier water as conditions change.
- Physiology: Osmoregulation—the control of internal water and salts—requires energy and differs among species.
- Growth and reproduction: A salinity that is survivable may still reduce growth or breeding success.
- Feeding: Changes in salinity can alter food availability and feeding habits.
“Brackish” therefore does not mean that every brackish fish can share one salinity, or that any species can withstand a rapid change.

Fish commonly kept in brackish aquariums
Care guides commonly discuss archerfish, puffers, scats, monos and leaf fish in connection with brackish aquariums. Their needs are not interchangeable. Before buying, confirm the scientific name, adult size, life-stage requirements and the salinity range recommended by a specialist source for that exact species.
| Comparison point | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Adult size and swimming style | A large, active swimmer needs more room and open water than a small, sedentary fish. |
| Target salinity and tolerance for change | Two fish sold as brackish may require different specific gravities or different rates of acclimation. |
| Diet | Puffers, predatory fish and omnivores do not have the same food or feeding schedule. |
| Aggression and compatibility | Territorial or fin-nipping behavior can make a mixed tank unsuitable even when salinity matches. |
| Filtration and tank volume | Waste production, activity and adult size determine the biological and mechanical capacity required. |
| Specialist versus salt-tolerant freshwater fish | A species that merely tolerates some salt may not thrive at the same salinity as a true brackish specialist. |
How to set up a brackish aquarium
Build the aquarium around the fish’s documented requirements, not around a generic “brackish” recipe.
Best Value
- FORMULATED SPECIFICALLY FOR MARINE AQUARIUMS: Contains every major, minor and trace element delicate marine fish and invertebrates need.
- DISSOLVES FAST: Superior solubility – provides a clear, ready-to-use solution in minutes.
- IDEAL pH: Quickly achieves and maintains ideal pH – free of nitrate and phosphate.
- CONVENIENT: No special additives are needed – will not separate during packaging and shipping.
- INSTANT OCEAN SEA SALT: The industry standard for quality, consistency and value for more than 40 years.
- Identify the species precisely. Record its scientific name, adult size, social behavior, diet and recommended salinity for its life stage.
- Choose an adequately sized tank and filtration system. Account for adult dimensions, swimming behavior, waste load and the number of fish; do not size the aquarium for a juvenile’s current length.
- Make saltwater with a marine salt mix. Aqueon describes brackish aquariums as systems between freshwater and marine setups and recommends mixing a sea-salt product, giving Coralife Marine Salt Mix as an example. Use the product’s instructions and the species’ target—not a guessed dose.
- Measure salinity with a suitable meter or hydrometer. Mix thoroughly, check the result, and allow the water to reach the aquarium’s temperature before adding livestock.
- Cycle and test the aquarium before stocking. Establish biological filtration and verify the routine water-quality tests recommended for the species.
- Acclimate fish gradually. Match temperature and avoid abrupt salinity shifts; the acceptable rate of change depends on the fish and its source water.
- Monitor on a schedule. Petco’s brackish-fish care sheet advises checking water quality weekly and salinity at least twice each week. Test again after water changes, equipment problems or unusual evaporation.
- Replace evaporated water correctly. Salt does not evaporate with water. Follow the species’ maintenance instructions so topping up does not slowly raise salinity; measure before making adjustments.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using table salt: Use an aquarium marine salt mix intended for preparing saltwater, not household salt.
- Choosing by store label alone: Verify whether the fish is a true brackish specialist or a freshwater species that only tolerates some salt.
- Copying another tank’s salinity: Different species, ages and life stages can have different targets.
- Changing salinity quickly: Rapid shifts can create osmotic stress even when the final number appears correct.
- Ignoring adult size and behavior: Compatibility and swimming room are as important as salinity.
- Testing only when fish look ill: Regular measurements reveal gradual drift before it becomes an emergency.
Bottom line for choosing a brackish fish
Think of brackish fish as animals adapted to an intermediate, changing environment. Select a species first, then match its adult tank, diet, companions, filtration and documented salinity range. Maintain that range with a marine salt mix and regular measurements; never assume that one “brackish” setting suits every fish.
