Nothing loose: a rattlesnake’s rattle is a chain of hollow, loosely interlocking keratin segments—the same tough protein found in hair and fingernails.
What the rattle is made of
The visible rattle consists of modified tail scales, often called buttons, joined in an overlapping chain. Each segment is hollow and made of keratin. There are no pebbles, beads, seeds or other objects inside it.
The rattle remains attached to the end of the tail while its segments move against one another. “Hollow” describes the individual keratin sections, not the entire tail, which contains normal living tissue and is connected to the rattle’s base.
How a rattlesnake produces the sound
- The tail vibrates. Muscles near the tail tip shake it rapidly.
- The segments move. The loosely fitted buttons press and slide against adjacent buttons.
- Edges collide and rub. That repeated mechanical contact creates the sharp buzz commonly called a rattle or hiss.
The sound is therefore produced by the rattle’s structure and movement—not by an object being shaken inside a chamber.

How a rattle develops
A newborn starts with one smooth button
A baby rattlesnake is born with a single, smooth terminal button. With only that button, it may not yet produce the full, familiar tail buzz.
Shedding adds segments
After a shed, a new keratin segment forms at the base of the existing rattle. The growing chain gains its characteristic series of overlapping sections as additional sheds occur.

Segments can be lost
Older end sections can weaken, break, or be damaged. Insects and physical wear can also remove parts of the chain. Because snakes may shed more than once in a year and do not retain every segment indefinitely, a rattle’s length changes over time.
Can the number of buttons reveal a rattlesnake’s age?
No. Counting segments is not a reliable way to determine age. Shedding frequency differs among individual snakes and species, while breakage and damage reduce the number that remains. A long rattle does not necessarily indicate an older snake, and a short one does not prove that the animal is young.

Why rattlesnakes rattle
Rattling is a defensive warning. When a snake feels threatened, it may vibrate its tail to alert a nearby animal before resorting to a strike. The warning gives the potential threat an opportunity to move away, while also signaling that the snake is prepared to defend itself.

“There are beads or rocks inside.”
There are not. The sound comes from hollow keratin segments contacting one another.

“The rattle grows one piece every year.”
A new segment is associated with shedding, not with a fixed calendar schedule. Since shedding can occur multiple times in a year and segments can be lost, annual counting is inaccurate.
“A broken rattle stops a snake from rattling.”
Loss of end segments can shorten or alter the sound, but the remaining interlocking sections may still produce a warning signal.

What to do if you hear one
- Stop and identify where the sound is coming from without approaching.
- Move away slowly, giving the snake a clear path to retreat.
- Keep children and pets back; do not attempt to handle, capture, or provoke the snake.
