Wyoming rivers hold more than trout. Depending on the river and reach, fish include trout, grayling, whitefish, catfish, suckers, minnows, and other species; local listings also document walleye, sauger, and shovelnose sturgeon. No single statewide list applies to every stretch, so check the listing for the specific river access or reach you have in mind.
Which kinds of fish live in Wyoming rivers?
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s statewide fish catalog covers fish found in Wyoming generally, not a complete inventory of every river. It includes Arctic grayling, burbot, channel catfish, cutthroat trout, sauger, shovelnose sturgeon, stonecat, and many others. Common game fish in the catalog include brook, brown, and rainbow trout, walleye, bass, perch, crappie, and northern pike. It also includes groups such as whitefish, suckers, and minnows.
River-specific records narrow that picture. Trout appear in the North Platte and Big Horn examples, while channel catfish, walleye, sauger, and shovelnose sturgeon are documented in particular locations. Those records establish presence at listed areas—not throughout an entire river or across the state.
What fish are listed for the North Platte River?
Wyoming Game and Fish Department access pages for the North Platte provide examples at particular access areas. Their structured “Fish Species in this Area” fields list rainbow trout and channel catfish; the page descriptions also mention brown trout and walleye. The Barnes Access Area listing and Whalen Access Area listing are useful starting points, but their area records should not be treated as a full inventory of the North Platte.

What fish are listed in the Big Horn River drainage?
The department’s Big Horn River drainage listings document trout and, at some walk-in areas, channel catfish, sauger, shovelnose sturgeon, and walleye. The species depend on the particular area; a drainage-level page does not mean every listed fish occurs at every access point.
Are walleye common in Wyoming rivers?
Wyoming Game and Fish says, “Although walleye are occasionally found in rivers (especially during the spring spawning season), this species prefers large lakes and reservoirs.” The department’s walleye profile helps put river sightings in context: a river record may reflect seasonal movement rather than a species typical of every reach.

How can you tell a walleye from a sauger?
The department notes that walleye and sauger can coexist in some Wyoming waters. Its identification cues are:
- Walleye: no spots on the dorsal fin; a white tip on the lower lobe of the tail.
- Sauger: spots on the dorsal fin; a thin white margin along the full tail.
These are useful features when both species are possible, but they do not establish that either species is present in a particular river reach.

How do you check fish for a specific river reach?
- Identify the river section or access area you plan to visit, rather than relying on a statewide fish list.
- Look up that place in Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s access-area or drainage listings. Read both the structured species field and any descriptive text, since they may name different species.
- Treat a local listing as evidence for that area only. If it does not name a species, do not assume the statewide catalog proves it occurs there.
Do fish species determine what you can keep?
No. Identifying a fish and knowing whether it may be harvested are separate questions. Wyoming’s fishing regulations set general game-fish categories and limits, with exceptions by drainage and individual water. The cited regulation edition is for 2025; check the current rules for the exact river and reach before keeping a fish.
