What Thanksgiving Foods Can Dogs Eat? Safe Choices and Foods to Avoid

A small taste of plain cooked turkey may be an option for dogs, but bones, fatty scraps, seasoned dishes, and several common holiday foods pose serious risks.

Dogs can have a small taste of fully cooked, boneless, unseasoned turkey if you choose to share. ASPCA also names small pieces of sweet potato and green beans as possible additions to a dog’s usual dinner. Keep your dog’s normal diet as the main meal: Thanksgiving recipes often contain risky ingredients, and no universal safe portion applies to every dog.

Avoid bones, turkey skin and fatty scraps, seasoned stuffing or gravy, raw yeast dough, xylitol-sweetened desserts, chocolate, alcohol, grapes and raisins, and very salty foods. When you cannot confirm every ingredient and how a dish was prepared, do not share it.

Can dogs eat turkey on Thanksgiving?

A little fully cooked, boneless turkey is the clearest meat option ASPCA identifies for sharing. Offer it plain, without skin, bones, gravy, stuffing, or seasoning, and treat it as a small taste rather than a replacement for the dog’s usual meal. ASPCA’s Thanksgiving Safety Tips also suggest small pieces of turkey, sweet potato, and green beans mixed into a dog’s regular dinner.

Do not give raw or undercooked poultry. Poultry bones can choke a dog or lodge in or injure the digestive tract. Turkey skin, drippings, and other fatty scraps can upset digestion and may trigger pancreatitis. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s Household Hazards brochure cautions: “Fatty, rich, or spicy foods can be too much for your pet’s system to handle, causing vomiting, diarrhea, and pancreatitis.”

Bocce's Bakery Pumpk'n Spice Flavor Soft & Chewy Dog Treats, 6 oz
  • These soft-baked 'B's are every doggy's favorite - from puppies, to picky eaters, to seniors with sensitive mouths, too! We baked a softer cookie with limited, natural ingredients perfect for pups looking for a chewier bite.
  • Perfect for Everyday Treating: With just 10 ingredients (like oat flour, pumpkin and peanut butter!) and only 13 calories per treat, you can feel good treating your favorite pup to this yummy recipe.
  • Proudly Baked in the USA: We start each recipe with the highest quality (tastiest!) ingredients, sourced in the USA local to our bakeries.
  • Our Promise: Wheat, corn, and soy-free recipes - and never, ever any artificial ingredients or preservatives. We keep our ingredient lists short, our batches small, and our ovens toasty.
  • Our Story: Bocce’s was started in a tiny NYC kitchen with a mixer, an oven and a scruffy mutt named Bocce, with the belief that our furry friends (pups and kitty cats, too!) deserve better. Better food with fresher, simpler, natural ingredients.

There is no universal portion size established for every dog. A dog’s health conditions and dietary restrictions may make even plain foods unsuitable, so follow veterinary advice where a dog has a prescribed diet or known food sensitivities.

Which Thanksgiving foods should dogs avoid?

Judge a dish by its ingredients and preparation, not its name. Stuffing, gravy, casseroles, desserts, and sauces can combine several hazards, and even a small taste may contain an ingredient that warrants veterinary advice.

Food or ingredient Why it is risky What to do
Turkey bones and carcass Bones can choke, lodge in the esophagus, stomach, or airway, obstruct the digestive tract, or splinter and cause internal injury. Keep bones and the carcass out of reach; secure them in a bin the dog cannot access.
Turkey skin, drippings, fatty scraps, rich leftovers High-fat foods can cause digestive upset and may lead to pancreatitis. Do not share skin or rich scraps. Seek veterinary advice if the dog becomes unwell after eating fatty food.
Stuffing, gravy, sauces, or other dishes with onion, garlic, or chives These alliums can irritate the digestive system and damage red blood cells. Risk depends in part on the amount eaten. Do not share seasoned dishes; check ingredient lists, including for powders and seasonings.
Raw yeast dough Dough can expand in the stomach and cause bloating; fermentation also produces alcohol. Keep rising dough inaccessible and call a veterinarian promptly if ingestion is suspected.
Sugar-free desserts, candy, gum, or products containing xylitol Xylitol can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar. It may also be found in some peanut butters. Check labels and call a veterinarian immediately if your dog may have eaten xylitol.
Chocolate Chocolate can cause serious toxicity. Call a veterinarian promptly if ingestion is suspected.
Alcohol Alcohol can be toxic to dogs. Keep drinks and foods containing alcohol out of reach; contact a veterinarian if exposure is suspected.
Grapes and raisins Exposure can lead to kidney damage; the guidance does not establish a safe dose. Do not offer them, and promptly seek veterinary advice after suspected ingestion.
Very salty foods, including bouillon Excess sodium can cause gastrointestinal problems and, in serious cases, seizures. Do not share salty scraps, bouillon, or foods made with it.

FDA’s Keep Your Dogs and Cats Safe From Holiday Hazards and Potentially Dangerous Items for Your Pet explain hazards including fatty foods, bones, xylitol, chocolate, and alcohol. ASPCA’s People Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pets discusses alliums, grapes and raisins, and other toxic foods.

How can you decide whether a dish is safe to share?

  • Check ingredients and seasoning. Look for onion, garlic, chives, xylitol, chocolate, alcohol, and excess salt, including in sauces, mixes, and packaged products.
  • Check preparation. Turkey should be fully cooked and boneless; do not offer raw poultry or any bone.
  • Consider fat content. Skip skin, drippings, fatty scraps, and rich leftovers.
  • Keep the portion small and simple. If offering a suitable food, make it a small plain addition to the dog’s normal dinner, not a large serving or unfamiliar mixed dish.

If the recipe or label is unclear, the cautious choice is not to share the food. These recommendations are general food-safety guidance, not individualized veterinary advice.

What if your dog ate a turkey bone or another hazardous food?

Contact a veterinarian or pet poison-control service promptly if you suspect your dog swallowed a bone or ate a potentially toxic food. Do not wait for symptoms, and do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional instructs you to. FDA notes that risk varies with the animal, the substance, and the amount.

  1. Move the dog away from the food and prevent further access to leftovers, packaging, or the trash.
  2. Gather useful details: the food or product package, its ingredient list, the approximate amount eaten, and when it happened, if known.
  3. Call for case-specific advice. ASPCA Poison Control lists (888) 426-4435; FDA lists Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661. Fees or service terms may apply; ask the service when you call.

For suspected xylitol or chocolate ingestion, FDA specifically advises calling a veterinarian immediately. A swallowed bone also merits prompt veterinary advice because choking, obstruction, or internal injury may not be apparent right away.

How can you prevent Thanksgiving food accidents?

  • Ask guests not to feed table scraps, and keep the dog away from food preparation and the dining table if needed.
  • Put bones and leftovers straight into a securely covered bin the dog cannot reach.
  • Check labels on sweets and peanut butter for xylitol before leaving them accessible.
  • If you want to include your dog, set aside a small portion of suitable plain food rather than sharing from seasoned dishes. ASPCA also suggests using the dog’s treats in a puzzle toy to keep the pet occupied during the meal; the toy does not make unsafe food safe.
