What to Do If a Rattlesnake Bites Your Dog or Cat

A suspected rattlesnake bite is an emergency for dogs and cats. Keep your pet still, call a veterinarian, and seek care immediately—do not wait for symptoms.

If you suspect a rattlesnake bit your dog or cat, call a veterinarian or emergency veterinary hospital immediately, keep your pet calm and still, and go for care now. Do not wait for symptoms to appear or worsen. Carry your pet if practical, and follow the clinic’s instructions while you travel.

What to do right away

  1. Call the nearest veterinarian or emergency veterinary hospital. Tell them you suspect a rattlesnake bite, where your pet was bitten if known, and what signs you have noticed. Head for veterinary care promptly.
  2. Keep your pet quiet and limit movement. Carry them if you can do so safely. Avoid letting them walk around, run, or struggle unnecessarily.
  3. Remove a collar or other restrictive item if the bite is on the face or neck. Swelling may develop in that area.
  4. Take a snake photo only if it is safe and does not delay care. Keep your distance. Do not try to catch, handle, or kill the snake.

These steps apply to both dogs and cats. A suspected bite needs veterinary assessment even if your pet seems normal at first.

What not to do

  • Do not apply ice, cold packs, or heat.
  • Do not use a tourniquet or compression bandage, cut the wound, or try suction.
  • Do not give human pain relievers, antihistamines, or other medication unless a veterinarian specifically instructs you.
  • Do not wait at home to see whether swelling or other signs develop.

These home interventions do not neutralize venom and may worsen injury or delay effective care. Merck Veterinary Manual, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and LSU School of Veterinary Medicine advise prompt veterinary attention and caution against these measures (Merck; UC Davis; LSU).

Signs of a possible rattlesnake bite

Signs can include sudden pain or distress, rapidly developing swelling—often around the face, muzzle, or a limb—puncture wounds, bleeding, bruising, or skin discoloration. Other possible signs include weakness, lethargy, collapse, drooling, vomiting, pale gums, rapid or difficult breathing, tremors, and trouble walking.

Fang marks may be hard to see, and the absence of obvious marks or immediate swelling does not rule out a venomous bite. Severity varies with the snake, the amount of venom injected, the bite location, and the animal. Some bites do not inject substantial venom, but an owner cannot reliably assess that at home. Seek care based on suspicion rather than waiting for a particular sign.

What the veterinarian may do

The veterinary team will assess your pet and monitor for local tissue damage and effects on the rest of the body, including problems with blood clotting. Treatment depends on the patient and the bite; it may include IV fluids, pain management, close monitoring, other supportive care, and antivenom when the veterinarian considers it appropriate.

  • Note: This kit only slows the spread of venom to buy time for medical treatment. Seek immediate medical attention!
  • Rational Design: Equipped with 3 round and 1 oval suction cup. Select the appropriate cup based on the location, shape and size of the affected area. Connect it to the pump handle to use it.

Merck Veterinary Manual describes antivenom as the only direct, specific means of neutralizing snake venom and says it is most effective within the first six hours. That timing is a reason to seek care promptly—not a home-treatment target or a guarantee that every patient needs antivenom. The clinician determines whether it is appropriate. Merck also advises close monitoring for at least 24 hours after crotalid bites; this is clinical guidance, not a reason to monitor a suspected bite at home instead of going to a clinic.

Why cats need urgent care too

A cat with a suspected rattlesnake bite needs the same urgency as a dog. UC Davis notes that cats may arrive at the veterinary hospital in more serious condition. Cat-specific snakebite studies are lacking, so treatment recommendations draw on established guidance for people and dogs. UC Davis also notes that cats can have allergic reactions to antivenins, with risk varying by formulation; the veterinary team weighs that risk when choosing treatment.
