If your dog resists tooth brushing, don’t force the brush. Start with calm, brief mouth handling and let your dog get comfortable with pet toothpaste; then introduce a soft-bristled toothbrush and build up to short, regular brushing sessions. If brushing remains difficult, ask your veterinarian about technique and supplementary dental products. Home care helps prevent dental problems, but it does not replace veterinary examinations or treat existing disease.
How to build up to brushing
Begin at the point your dog can manage without struggling. Keep each introduction brief and calm, and move forward gradually rather than trying to complete a full brushing routine right away. UC Davis recommends progressing to a soft-bristled toothbrush and pet toothpaste after a dog is accustomed to earlier steps.
- Get comfortable with mouth handling. Gently handle your dog’s muzzle and lips for a short time, stopping before your dog becomes distressed. Do not force the mouth open or restrain your dog as a way to make brushing happen.
- Introduce pet toothpaste. Let your dog become familiar with the toothpaste before adding a brush.
- Bring in a soft-bristled toothbrush. Once your dog is comfortable with the earlier steps, introduce the brush gently and keep the first attempts brief.
- Build a regular routine. Add brushing gradually as your dog becomes more comfortable. Ask your veterinarian whether the recommended brushing technique is appropriate for your dog.
Brushing is the most effective home-care method for preventing dental disease, but your dog does not need to tolerate a complete brushing sequence immediately. The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) notes that some pets will not cooperate with daily brushing or accept every step. Its guidance puts the practical goal plainly: “Any brushing activity, used regularly, is better than no brushing activity.” VOHC brushing guidance offers further direction.
What to do if brushing still isn’t possible
Ask your veterinarian about alternatives suited to your dog. Products on the current VOHC accepted-products list may provide supplementary dental care when used as directed. The list covers specific products and claims in categories including dental diets, chews, water additives, oral gels and sprays, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and wipes. A dental label alone does not mean a product is VOHC-accepted, so check the exact product and accepted claim.

AAHA’s dental-care guidance says there is no strong rationale for offering hard treats such as antlers or natural or synthetic bones: they can damage tooth structure and lead to pain and infection. They are not a safe shortcut for a toothbrush. AAHA nutrition guidance explains the concern.

Daily brushing can be hard to establish. In a 2023 client-education article, AAHA reported that fewer than 10% of pet owners brush their dog’s or cat’s teeth daily and that 14% of dogs receive annual dental care by a veterinarian. The article does not provide the underlying study details, so these figures should be read in that context, not as newly measured statistics. The useful takeaway is to make brushing manageable and regular while keeping veterinary care in the plan.
